Rude, invasive taxi driver. AIBU to report?

I booked a taxi and to cut a long story short, didn't need it anymore

It turned up at my house. I had cancelled - they send out a taxi which goes a bit like this

'Thank you for booking A&B taxis. Your driver is on the way. Send CANCEL to cancel your booking'

And I sent cancel. To which an automated response of 'you have cancelled your taxi, etc etc' came through

The driver seemed to be sat there for a few minutes and I wasn't prepared. So I hoped he'd get the message (both literal and physical) that I didn't need the taxi. He was waiting some more and then stormed over the the front door! Could see from my doorbell recording app

He banged on the door and I didn't answer. He then shouted 'I know you're in there! I can see you peaking Angry'

I didn't respond and remained silent. He opened my door! And stepped into the house. He then shouted 'TAXI!'

I was terrified and thought about calling the police. I locked the living room door. I heard some foot steps and then the street door slam. I went out and bolted it straight away, having seen him leave via my Ring camera

Do I report this? To the police or just the taxi firm?

He knocked loudly and called loudly because guess what, some people are hard of hearing.

I'd be pissed off if I had been called to a house, waited outside, and could see that somebody was inside the house watching me but not answering the damn door, and I'd probably make a point in no uncertain terms that I knew they were in there not bloody answering the door to the taxi that they called, too.

All of which could have been avoided if the OP had just popped out when they saw the cab pull up, apologised and shown him that you'd sent a cancellation text.

OP prioritised avoiding her own embarrassment over avoiding wasting more of the guy's time, then has the cheek to complain that he didn't take too kindly to being fucked around.

You can be as pissed off as you want — it doesn’t mean you go into someone’s house and start shouting, does it?

Jesus wept.

He was called to the house. How was he supposed to know OP was alone? There could have been another resident that booked the taxi and he is there thinking OP is lazily curtain twitching instead of telling a housemate or family member their taxi is here. He had to do something to ensure he wasn’t abandoning a fare.

I get the feeling that there may be a degree of exaggeration going on here.

Also who has a lock on their living room door?

Side note: I’m sick of being expected by taxi firms to use their crappy online/text systems then putting up with the fallout when they inevitably fuck up.

Happens to you a lot does it? 😂

Same as the doctors appointment reminder service press cancel if your not coming you cancelled then get a letter accusing you of time wasting quoting valuable nhs resources wasted etc etc you show them you cancelled how the message told you to only to get another lecture about how that's a paid for subscription service they haven't signed up for and i should have known this and called to confirm my cancellation had been cancelled I nearly got into trouble for asking her calmly if she had actually heard herself her colleague who was a friend of mine was laughing at my reaction and managed to smooth things over

Technology is a particular bugbear of mine

I think what I did prior to him coming into my house isn't relevant

I wasn't rude. I didn't harm anyone or hurt him. But he came into my actual house! Madness

I know I should've just said but none of that is an excuse surely

I'm baffled but probably won't complain now

If you're normally an anxious person, why wasn't your door locked?
(I'm not excusing him btw)

He just shouted "taxi".

Why for gods name didn’t you just go out and say you cancelled it? Why were you peaking from behind the curtains ? Of course he shouldn’t have done what he did. But cmon.

She was probably terrified he would kick off

Daisybuttercup12345 · 22/01/2024 23:17

What do you think the police will actually do?

PostItInABook · 22/01/2024 23:20

Do you live in Ireland OP?

CharlieUniformNovemberTangoYankee · 22/01/2024 23:21

Utterly amazed at some of the responses here. On what planet is it OK for this man to have entered the OP's home? So he was a bit pissed off, that makes it acceptable for him to do what he likes? I fucking despair.

Get him reported OP!

AdobeWanKenobi · 22/01/2024 23:22

Could see from my doorbell recording app

And yet you didn’t utilise it’s main feature and speak to the bloke through it….. Doesn’t add up does it really? Ring doorbells you can watch live but don’t speak though, so concerned about safety you have locks on internal doors but don’t lock the front door?
Nah.

Trinity65 · 22/01/2024 23:28

😆😆😆

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 22/01/2024 23:29

He didn't come in storming and shouting
He called out taxi and then left. I suspect even just in the porch of this suspiciously unlocked house.
If he'd come in, screaming and ranting, calling her all sorts of names and then refused to leave it'd be different.

SD1978 · 22/01/2024 23:30

I'd also say if you're a nervous sort OP- maybe don't leave the front door unlocked........

Boomboom22 · 22/01/2024 23:32

Tbh you escalated it by peeking out of the curtains. Maybe he thought you were a teenager.
A grown adult would have seen him pull up and immediately pop out and say I'm so sorry I cancelled immediately, with your phone on that screen in case he challenged you or tried to say you had to pay.

Instead you obviously saw him and let him just sit there, ignored your door then randomly shouted police instead of saying
I cancelled it
Or I don't need a taxi

Beginning to think I was the only one who wondered why the front door was unlocked but internal doors have locks on them!

RachelGreensHair · 22/01/2024 23:35

Well as you have a Ring doorbell you will have a recording of all this banging and shouting.

Boomboom22 · 22/01/2024 23:35

I think it's a porch front door, then a living room is the main door. Seems most likely mix of truth and hyperbole.

Ah that would make sense with the doors.

My first thought here was this probably started as something fairly benign with some artistic license for dramatic effect.

bombardelli · 22/01/2024 23:38

I hope you get fined and banned for life for wasting the taxi company’s time.

People like you ruin things for everyone else.

And why leave your front door unlocked if you were scared and hide in your living room? Hmm

Why is your front door open for anyone to walk in? Are you mad? Ours is always closed at least with the yale lock and sometimes with the mortice lock as well. I never want to feel just anyone could open the door and walk in.

Mines locked and dead-bolted whenever I'm at home. The only time it's ever only locked by the key or just by the deadbolt is when I'm doing a load of washing and have to go outside to the washing machine.

mumda · 22/01/2024 23:45

I've not seen a taxi driver go and knock on a door ever. They seem to be fond of beeping the horn as their sole method of communication here.

He's certainly got more energy that the ones round here.

Boomboom22 · 22/01/2024 23:46

It costs £20 for the taxi to turn up here, before the fare starts. There's no cancelling, it'd be 35ish I think if you said go back to base!
