I’m curious to hear everyone’s unpopular food opinions

AIBU to find lasagna massively overrated.

Ready meal lasagna is point blank rank.
Using jars of sauce makes an alright lasagna but nothing to hype about.
Making it from scratch is by far the tastiest option, but it is just so much effort to make a tomato based sauce while simultaneously making a cheese sauce and then layering to then have to wait for it to cook in the oven!
I’ve never actually had lasagna from a restaurant as it could be very nice but there’s always something that I fancy more.

What is everyone else’s unpopular food opinions?

@2024Hackathon lol I've never heard of a Protestant tray bake... but come to think of it I'm very partial to a traybake but my husband (catholic) hates them! 😂 must be in the blood!

justlonelystars · 21/01/2024 21:44

Mushy peas are the most disgusting thing ever created

Chicken is nicer dry than juicy

Cheap wafer thin ham is better than naice ham

Bacon is only good if it’s so over cooked it literally disintegrates when you bite into it. Otherwise it’s salty fatty horribleness

That prawns aren’t better/more sophisticated served shell on. All the lovely Italians around me do it now, and most people see it is a step up! I’d rather someone else (who I’m paying) to do the mucky work.

Buratta is overrated.

sourdough is not as tasty as a basic white crusty loaf.

I was out to dinner with a colleague once. Her starter came and she calmly asked the waiter to return it to the kitvhen and peel her prawns . I was a little impressed.😂

justlonelystars · 21/01/2024 21:45

Oh and butter and jam do not belong together. Either or, never together.

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 21/01/2024 21:46

Chicken skin is nice. I've only recently started liking ice cream after 35 years, and to add to that I have taken a shine to bubblegum flavour which is not a real flavour it doesn't exist, it's a manmade concoction but I still love it and it is always a very bright blue.

My grandpa I hate cheese. “I won’t eat it, I won’t allow it in anything because one time cheese made me sick.”
My Nana (whispering to me) “I put it in everything.”
lol

And now for a genuinely controversial & unpopular opinion.

Chicken & pork are far too cheap. £2.50 for a kg of chicken legs & £3.79 for 700g of pork chops (source : Tesco.com) is simply indefensible. They should cost at least three times what they do, and probably more. Both meats should be produced much less intensively & we should eat less of them & value them more.

Yes, I do know about the cost of living crisis, and yes, I am entirely serious. People claim they can’t afford decent food at the supermarket yet they still seem to have plenty of spare cash for CostaBucks, McD’s, Deliveroo, Sky, Netflix etc etc. It’s about priorities.

WishesPromises · 21/01/2024 21:50

American food is mostly big bland heart attack fodder.

jelly79 · 21/01/2024 21:53

Oreo's are over rated

Victoria sponge and birthday cake are the worst type of cakes

Mustard is the number 1 condiment

Not that unpopular!

I was coming on to post that chicken is absolutely disgusting.

Partly due to the flesh itself - all the knuckles and blood and gristly bits.
Partly as it's so riddled with bacteria you get horribly sick if you don't handle it properly.
Mostly because of the sickening, inhumane farming practices required to get it into supermarkets at a price most people are willing to pay.

I honestly don't know how people can stomach it.

MonsteraMama · 21/01/2024 21:55

Tuturkeykey · 21/01/2024 21:41

Totally agree with you on baked beans - they look, smell and feel like vomit.

But you’ve not been using bay leaves right if you think they add nothing. They are extremely flavourful and will transform a soup or stew. They’re what gives the hearthy taste to home cooking. Add some to a chicken and tomato soup, it takes depths of new flavour.

I put them in every soup or stew I make. If I forget to put them in, they taste exactly the same. They're a leafy con.

PrinceYakimov · 21/01/2024 21:56

There's nothing wrong with plain food or with having a limited range of easy recipes that you stick to most nights.

Sandwiches do not need umpteen different kinds of protein or dressings.

There's no need to spoil a good fruit cake by putting peel or glace cherries in it.

Foodfoodfoodfood · 21/01/2024 21:58

Fish and chips is the worst. Anything deep fried actually.

Same for pickled food 🤮

Love radishes.

Also love nigellas Calabrian lasagne. Although it’s a lie when she calls it “quick” 😂

I do not 'get' saffron at all.

Anything served in it's shell apart from an egg is a little bit grim and yucky.

Masterchef should ditch the posh critics in favour of underprivileged teenagers for at least one show per season.

Definitely agree @BarelyLiterate

I really don't have much money at all,- bf if I was single, I'd be back on universal credit 🙈

But meat is so cheap, it's ludicrous. We take for granted animals lives, the cost of good farming practices.

Like @Boomboomshakeshaketheroom says, I find it off putting to eat sometimes. Really cheap stuff is bleurgh. All I can think about is poor mistreated manky chickens.

Good post for this thread!

posibler · 21/01/2024 22:02

I agree that roast potatoes are shite.

HighlandCowSaysBooNotMoo · 21/01/2024 22:03

Can't see the fuss over bacon sandwiches 🤢
Instant coffee is RANK

I am partial to a McDonald's 🤭

TheDevilGun · 21/01/2024 22:04

Skin-on fries are awful, I can't even think about putting them in my mouth without gagging. Sadly they seem to be taking over the world and make eating out a big disappointment, as they did yesterday when I really fancied some hot, crispy fries with my steak. Didn't even say skin-on on the menu which should be illegal

🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

janeintheframe · 21/01/2024 22:04

yorkshire puddings are bland and pointless. Genuinely don’t get the love for them,

beans are awful , bean juice makes me heave.

Nicole1111 · 21/01/2024 22:08

KimberleyClark · 21/01/2024 21:12

I agree about Nutella.

But honey?
Peanut Butter?
Marmalade?

No to honey and marmalade but yes to peanut butter on the basis I don’t consider that sweet

Upwiththelark76 · 21/01/2024 22:08

Salad cream tastes like vinegar
hot chocolate is yak
avocado is bland mush

Quite vague. What exactly?

GrumpyMiddleAgedCow · 21/01/2024 22:10

Roast tatties are overrated… for sure I will swap mine in Xmas dinner for Brussels which I love! Mashed tatties all the way.

Lasagna is very average, it’s nice to have frozen once in a blue moon with garlic bread. Mushrooms are a no go, I feel like you’re eating a slug 🐌 🍄, and apologies to OP but tofu is disgusting, if you’ve never tasted it before try a bit of rubber from the wains pencil case it’s exactly the same…..also sweetcorn should replace peas 100% of the time 😋

moggerhanger · 21/01/2024 22:12

Cheesecake is disgusting.

Borborygmus · 21/01/2024 22:13

Things that are grim (in no particular order):

wine (well any alcoholic drink really)
mustard
chocolate with orange (they're fine separately)
turkish delight
pizza
marzipan
christmas pudding
stollen
parsnips
swede
cabbage
marmalade
