I’m curious to hear everyone’s unpopular food opinions

AIBU to find lasagna massively overrated.

Ready meal lasagna is point blank rank.
Using jars of sauce makes an alright lasagna but nothing to hype about.
Making it from scratch is by far the tastiest option, but it is just so much effort to make a tomato based sauce while simultaneously making a cheese sauce and then layering to then have to wait for it to cook in the oven!
I’ve never actually had lasagna from a restaurant as it could be very nice but there’s always something that I fancy more.

What is everyone else’s unpopular food opinions?

Smoked salmon tastes like a disease

I don’t get lasagne either. Spaghetti does not go with bolognaise- but don’t really like bolognaise either but if I must with penne.
i hate meal planning.
crispy chilli oil makes most things taste better.

You're factually correct. Ragu is made in bologna but would never be served with spaghetti

Salad dressing - why would anybody in their right mind invent something specifically designed to wreck salad?

I occasionally see a cookery programme on the TV. They often make something that looks pretty good, then at the last minute they ruin it by drizzling oil all over it. Who on earth wants food covered in oil?

ShowOfHands · 23/01/2024 07:39

I'm not sure these are unpopular opinions, rather than a list of things people don't like. Preferences are normal.

However, denigrating roast potatoes, all cheeses and an entire country's offerings are definitely examples of unpopular opinions.

I agree wholeheartedly with all alcohol being rank.

Raisins are a waste of a good grape, which should be destined for wine. They have no business ruining other dishes like tiny poos, particularly dishes involving rice.

Oysters look like snot.
Eating any type of fish eggs is weird.
Foie gras should be banned.

Must say it's refreshing to see a food thread without all the usual 'The only reason you don't like such and such is because you've never had it done properly' or 'You only think you dislike such and such because you buy the Tesco version. But if you had it in that little bistro I visited in Provence last summer you'd love it.'

No, I probably wouldn't.

For me, this is actually true though. Foods I didn’t think I liked, I did because I had it cooked properly, tried a different variety, or a different maker. They may not be my absolute favourites but I did enjoy them.

Many foods mentioned could be down to genetics interestingly enough.

Taste for speciality foods is in our genes, study shows

The reasons why people love certain foods and turn their noses up at others, has to do with more than their cultures or even their taste buds… their genes play a significant role too, a new study reveals.

It's a thread of unpopular opinions. If you don't like the heat, get out of the kitchen.

You're not supposed to like or agree with other people's takes.

That’s interesting. I really do find most fish unpalatable. Looks, smells and tastes vile. And cod actually makes me violently sick. The only fish I can stomach is smoked salmon.

Chocolate isn’t actually horrible but the amount of fuss made about it is incomprehensible.

Bread is the greatest food invention in all human history. I love chocolate, but bread beats everything.

Raw tomatoes and mayonnaise have no place in a sandwich

Rice and chips is a great combination

Crisps add a nice crunch to a plain sandwich
