I’m curious to hear everyone’s unpopular food opinions

AIBU to find lasagna massively overrated.

Ready meal lasagna is point blank rank.
Using jars of sauce makes an alright lasagna but nothing to hype about.
Making it from scratch is by far the tastiest option, but it is just so much effort to make a tomato based sauce while simultaneously making a cheese sauce and then layering to then have to wait for it to cook in the oven!
I’ve never actually had lasagna from a restaurant as it could be very nice but there’s always something that I fancy more.

What is everyone else’s unpopular food opinions?

Skin-on fries are awful, I can't even think about putting them in my mouth without gagging. Sadly they seem to be taking over the world and make eating out a big disappointment, as they did yesterday when I really fancied some hot, crispy fries with my steak. Didn't even say skin-on on the menu which should be illegal

🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Aw no I love them over normal chips! 🍟 If you were my pal I would bring you “fries” for a straight swap fries/chip wise 😂 like yes I did smuggle these MacDonalds chips in 😂

MyOodieIsAGoooodie · 21/01/2024 22:14

Truffle pretends it’s posh while smelling like sweaty armpit.

Truffle is rank.

quizquiz · 21/01/2024 22:14

I hate Mayonnaise 🤢

Tuturkeykey · 21/01/2024 22:15

Most English food is bland and unadventurous. A Sunday roast is the worst meal.

If you are averse to several of the following: mushrooms, avocados, condiments, spices/chillies, soft/goat/blue cheese, snails, oysters, aubergine, lentils, celery, risotto, sushi, tartare, tofu, the problem is you. It’s never too late to train your senses and discover the joy of food.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 21/01/2024 22:15

I like peas and all things pea-related.

OddityOddityOdd · 21/01/2024 22:16

Chips from the chippie are dreadful, soggy, pale horrors and should be out straight in the bin.

jackstini · 21/01/2024 22:17

Iceberg lettuce (& most mixed leaves) are pointless

I get rocket - it tastes of something
Spinach - ok cooked

But - iceberg lettuce just tastes like gone off water; it takes away from the taste of anything it is put with and makes bread on sandwiches soggy

iamwhatiam23 · 21/01/2024 22:18

White and rose wine are disgusting and prosseco is even worse!

HollyKnight · 21/01/2024 22:18

It sounds like a lot of people don't know how to cook food properly!

My food "mehs".

Smoked salmon
Fancy cheese
Fancy bread

I don't get it. They're all so bland.

Lemongrass makes dishes taste like fairy liquid has accidentally been added

Agreed.

Agreed too.

Those fancy overpriced French macarons are bland, stale-textured meh. Give me a bake-sale coconut MACAROON any day!

I agree. My husband just brought back a box of Ladurée macarons from Paris. Not for the first time 🤨

They will, as always, sit there in an increasingly sugary and sticky mess until I bin them.

Turkey is awful, dry tasteless stuff. I have never had one at Christmas, or any other time, and I never will. Sod ‘tradition’.

🍺 is much better than 🍷. It’s tastier, it has more variation in styles & types, good stuff doesn’t cost a fortune and you can drink more of it.

Instant coffee is undrinkable muck. All of it. Even the heavily marketed ‘posh’ stuff.

I don't see turkey at Christmas as traditional in the UK. It's a north American bird, wtf are we eating then?

CakedUpHigh · 21/01/2024 22:24

Pizza is overpriced overrated cheese on toast. The mark up must be massive.

takealettermsjones · 21/01/2024 22:28

Cheese and fish do not belong together.
Nutmeg is shit.
Shallots are pointless.
Oysters are fucking delicious.

Roast potatoes suck

How very dare you!!!!

Given it was first popularised by the royals in the mid-1800s then you must be really rather old if this tradition confuses you. Do you take similar issue with the roast potatoes since potatoes aren’t a native crop?

I like peas and all things pea-related.

I think, given the ubiquity of peas, that the more controversial take is to think peas are the worst of all veg options.

I hate peas. They are my least favourite vegetable. And I’m including slimy okra, badly cooked aubergine and sweaty mushrooms in that judgement. There is no dish that including peas constitutes an improvement, and many that are ruined by them.

My unpopular opinion is probably that I hate carveries. Overcooked meat. Poorly cooked veg that came in to the pub/restaurant frozen (including fucking peas). Really thick gravy 🤮. I just simply don’t understand… but so many people seem to really, really love it.

Another unpopular opinion (related to the above) is that I hate frozen veg. I don’t care if it supposedly maintains nutrient levels. Freezing almost any vegetable ruins the texture so I don’t want to eat it, meaning that I have no interest in eating it.

Frozen veg mix of peas, carrots and sweetcorn is an abomination. I will judge you harshly if you serve me this. (I will
still eat it out of politeness, but I will not be happy).

Chocolate does not actually have an affinity with citrus fruit or any fruit.

Why should I "train" myself to eat food I find painful? I'm not a masochist, so eating hot stuff isn't pleasurable. I'm quite content to eat flavours I like, not what someone else thinks is better.

Sushilover14 · 21/01/2024 22:33

I love semolina.

5128gap · 21/01/2024 22:36

I don't mind marmite one way or the other.
I love sprouts.
Since stopping eating meat, i dont miss bacon at all and don't love the smell.

DancingFerret · 21/01/2024 22:38

Anything that comes out of KFC, Burger King, et al.

Catsmere · 21/01/2024 22:40

Tapioca is foul. Absolutely horrible texture.

HighQueenOfTheFarRealm · 21/01/2024 22:40

I love homemade mushy peas. Peas blended with crème fraiche, garlic and mint. Some seasoning and it's ready and delicious.

eandz13 · 21/01/2024 22:41

Grim: tonic water, Dr Pepper, courgettes, bacon, sausages (or any pork product, really), liquorice, beetroot, muesli, plain boiled rice, prawn crackers.

Baked beans are magnificent.
Mayonnaise/salad cream goes with just about anything.
Curry is beautiful (but korma looks and tastes like nutty diarrhoea, that doesn't count).
Lumpy mash is fantastic.
It has to be thick gravy.
Cottage cheese is amazing.
