I’m curious to hear everyone’s unpopular food opinions

AIBU to find lasagna massively overrated.

Ready meal lasagna is point blank rank.
Using jars of sauce makes an alright lasagna but nothing to hype about.
Making it from scratch is by far the tastiest option, but it is just so much effort to make a tomato based sauce while simultaneously making a cheese sauce and then layering to then have to wait for it to cook in the oven!
I’ve never actually had lasagna from a restaurant as it could be very nice but there’s always something that I fancy more.

What is everyone else’s unpopular food opinions?

I love burnt sausages. Like to the point they are black. Very carcinogenic I'm sure so I rarely do it.

I think you'll find burnt sausages have a cult following

justanotherusername22 · 22/01/2024 15:19

I second "Roast potatoes suck"

AND:

up the stakes to all roast dinners suck! I hate a "good roast" - no matter where, who or what is included! No Christmas dinner for me 😂

Gingerbee · 22/01/2024 15:24

Brussels sprouts are the work the 😈

Katisha · 22/01/2024 15:27

Salted caramel is not as nice as we're all led to believe.
Macaroni cheese should not be called mac n'cheese
Corned beef is lovely

HeddaGarbled · 22/01/2024 15:29

You don’t need more than two types of vegetable with Christmas dinner or a Sunday roast.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 22/01/2024 15:38

…”Picky Tea" should be banned. It sounds twee and irritates me greatly. Have a…grazing board

No, no grazing boards! All those foods mushed up next to each other and people picking through them. I am no hygiene freak - and I’ll admit to loving a buffet - but grazing boards are grim.

AffIt · 22/01/2024 15:46

Truffle tastes of expensive mud.

Cranberry juice tastes like it's desperately trying not to be wet.

AffIt · 22/01/2024 15:48

Oh, and as a Scot, shortbread is utterly pointless.

If you're going to waste calories on a biscuit, at least have one that tastes nice.

CoffeeCantata · 22/01/2024 15:49

I must be the only person on the planet who doesn't enjoy Thai food. I can't even bear the smell - it has a sweet, insipid odour. I know I'm unique in this!

I love chocolate (cheap, common chocolate, mind - none of your fancy stuff) but get sick of the complete monopoly chocolate seems to have when it comes to people's preferences in terms of puddings, ice cream, cakes etc. There's a particular restaurant critic I read and I always skip to the end to find he's chosen a chocolate pudding. The River Cafe cook books only have chocolate tarts in many variations, and Nigella suggested making a chocolate/fruit Christmas cake this year (didn't she??). It's like football to me - nothing wrong with it, but other flavours/types of pudding/cake are available. Also - when I used to be on a cake stall at school events, it just wasn't worth making anything other than chocolate brownies. That's all everyone wanted - they must be crazy!

Not keen on shellfish - not because of the taste but because you have to eat the whole critter (inc innards) sometimes and frankly, if I'm going to eat a tentacly, leggy, prickly prawn - what's the actual difference between that and a grasshopper, really? Conditioning, I suppose.

Other than that, I'm the greediest, most indiscriminate person you'll meet.

HangingOver · 22/01/2024 15:52

I love really overcooked broccoli with butter

OldCutDiamond · 22/01/2024 15:53

vegetables are soo over rated

I have IBS and most veg makes me vomit, especially iceberg lettuce, been up many a night puking and diarrhoea-ing due to bloody vegetables🙄 its like my stomach hates it and tries its best to expell it

Any milk puddings

Nope, DH and I can't stand most Thai food either. Particularly Thai curries in their various colours. The textures and flavours are all just...wrong.

HangingOver · 22/01/2024 15:57

There are some food where the cheap version is nicer than the fancy one.

MrsHughesPinny · 22/01/2024 16:01

@sprigatito Thai food is my favourite and pretty much any dessert I’ll ever order is chocolate. Other than the occasional caramel or coffee thing it’s the only type of dessert I like.

I draw the line at any crustacean!

MightyFishwife · 22/01/2024 16:05

Walnuts and pecans taste good but smell like pig manure

MrsMarzetti · 22/01/2024 16:10

Tofu is like eating a wet bath sponge. Deep fried pizza crunch is they food of the gods but obviously only eaten once a year.

Oh you do. Two veg is stingy on the veg.

I have an ongoing annoying with recipe meal kits (gousto, hello fresh) for not having enough veg in the meal. I sometimes fall for the 60% off thing and think I’ll try a cheap box. But then I have to buy lots of additional veg to supplement things. 90% of the meals seem to
just omit onion (or shallot) where onion should definitely be. Other are served with a big mound of, for example, carrots when the meal would be much better with carrots and broccoli.

That said, at least they don’t just serve peas with everything.

HangingOver · 22/01/2024 16:13

Sometimes I really like the squarest whitest bread available

SquashPenguin · 22/01/2024 16:14

Mushrooms are fucking rank. They should be banned.

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 22/01/2024 16:15

'Proper' sausages are rank. Give me Richmond anytime.

Green peppers are inexcusable.

Els1e · 22/01/2024 16:22

I like lumpy mash potato. Don’t mind a small knob of butter but hate when milk or cream are added and it is whipped to death.

HangingOver · 22/01/2024 16:31

Dolmades out of a can are food or the gods

The correct implement for conveying super noodles to mouth is not a fork but a folded piece of thickly buttered white bread.

ApplesinmyPocket · 22/01/2024 16:41

Garlic has the most foul, horrible smell, a disgusting taste, and taints every dish it's in.

I don't actually think it's edible, though clearly this is the very definition of an 'unpopular opinion' given its prevalence in every damned thing!
