I’m curious to hear everyone’s unpopular food opinions

AIBU to find lasagna massively overrated.

Ready meal lasagna is point blank rank.
Using jars of sauce makes an alright lasagna but nothing to hype about.
Making it from scratch is by far the tastiest option, but it is just so much effort to make a tomato based sauce while simultaneously making a cheese sauce and then layering to then have to wait for it to cook in the oven!
I’ve never actually had lasagna from a restaurant as it could be very nice but there’s always something that I fancy more.

What is everyone else’s unpopular food opinions?

avocado is vile

I dont mind it but it does taste like clean ball bags.

dyspraadhauwtaf63 · 22/01/2024 10:46

Salmon fillets are revolting. Pineapple should be banned.

I think I have a genetic variation in how I smell/taste celery. It smells like very stale BO and tastes like some kind of industrial cleaner. I can’t have it in the house due to the smell.

I’m not expecting anyone to understand what I mean, but I often say that green pepper tastes how BO smells 🤔

This does happen for some people cilantro tastes like soap.

Giggorata · 22/01/2024 10:49

Anything derived from a goat is rank.
Chilli is horrid.
piri piri is worse
pear drops - just why?

edited to include Red Bull. just the smell drives me out of the room.

Instant coffee is nicer than real 😀

Call the police

I like both instant and fresh, I see them as different drinks and I’m sometimes yn the mood for one over the other.

kisstheblarney · 22/01/2024 02:05

Beetroot tastes like soil

Mash potatoes is the food of the devil!

You are my food view soulmate

as a vegetarian I hate how beetroot appears in bloody everything.

and chickpeas are awful

beguilingeyes · 22/01/2024 11:05

Italian food is massively over-rated. I don't want to go out an pay a small fortune for something I can do at home. Dull, dull, dull.

Whoopsmahoot · 22/01/2024 11:07

Avocado 🤮
coffee 🤮

Previousreligion · 22/01/2024 11:16

I don't think there are many normal things that I don't like under any circumstances. For example, I've had excellent lasagne and inedible lasagne - if I'd only had the latter I might think I disliked all lasagne. Also in this category is sushi.

Lasagne is indeed too much faff to many at home imo.

I will never ever like liquorice or vinegar though. Just the smell.

evtheria · 22/01/2024 11:25

Seconding @SouthEastCoast - roast potatoes are boring and the worst form of potato. 'Crispy outsides, fluffy insides...' bla bla, every time I eat one I actually regret it.

• Peri peri is sooooooooooooooo disappointing. How can something made of all those spices etc be so flavourless?! Incredible achievement.

Yorkshire puddings are rubbish. Not vile or anything, just nothingness. The culinary equivalent of a sigh.

😂Agree! Only ones I'll touch are my Auntie's and that's cos they're small with loads of milk in them.

DrCoconut · 22/01/2024 11:33

Bacon is foul. And roast lamb smells like faeces. I genuinely feel sick at the thought of either of them.

Rainbow1901 · 22/01/2024 11:36

SusanSHelit · 21/01/2024 20:35

Chocolate is vastly overrated. Yes, even posh chocolate.

I agree!! To each their own but I actually don't like the stuff.

But liver is rank too. Don't mind liver pate but liver with onions - 😒

BrightYellowDaffodil · 22/01/2024 11:51

Burgers served in pubs are too thick.

Hell yes. All that "dirty burger" nonsense when what they've served you needs deconstructing before you can even think of eating it because burgers, slices of salad (a whole wedge of Little Gem, really?), wodges of cheese, onion rings and goodness knows what else (all of which is dripping with sauce) has precisely zero chance of making it to my mouth and 100% chance of ending up on me.

Oh, you stuck a humungous cocktail stick in it to hold the thing together? Sure, just add the possibility of facial injury to the mix. Why not?

Actually, "dirty" anything when it comes to food is unnecessary, just fuck off with that shtick.

And trifle. That can fuck off too.

Bacon is foul. And roast lamb smells like faeces. I genuinely feel sick at the thought of either of them.

it reminds me about this one evening few years ago when I was helping out my friend with her mum. it was November and dark and cold. Simply unpleasant and pub sounded like reasonable place to have a break. long story short we went to the pub. Only to be welcomed by this repugnant smell of infected foots/smelly and wet socks. We both could smell it.
Then we saw this lady having a lamb shank with mint sauce for lunch.
My whole life I was gaslighted to believe its me problem. Now I know it was always the lamb...

Bacon is not as bad as sausages though. Full English is the worst. Warm tomatoes (with skins....), bacon AND sausages and all this porky fat going into your eggs. Horror. Should be illegal.

purplecorkheart · 22/01/2024 12:03

Coconut water is vile. Hot chocolate tastes of sweet water. Boiled potatoes are bland mush. Brie smells so bad I cannot bring myself to eat it.

EdinaMonsoon · 22/01/2024 12:04

Goat related produce of any kind (it all tastes like goats smell).

Ketchup/HP/mayo any other sauce of this kind makes me heave - even when I see it on other people's plates.

Agree that roast lamb smells of faeces EXCEPT lamb kleftiko (essentially Greek roast lamb although I accept I am being somewhat simplistic here). Perhaps the citrus cancels out the fattiness of the meat aromas?

Sweetcorn

Fake meat - except for Quorn. I cannot stand the shoe-sole type veggie/vegan burgers that are usually offered in restaurants. What's wrong with a proper black bean/lentil burger? (just don't include sweetcorn).

Chocolate mixed with fruit in any form: strawberries should not be dipped in it and Terry can fuck off with his chocolate orange.

Buffets and carveries are the work of the devil. A group of people helping themselves to piles of food whilst leaning/reaching over serving dishes, breathing/coughing and potentially using their hands to grab items makes me gag and should be banned. I include hotel breakfast bars in this category. I want a single plate of food brought to my table direct from the kitchen, thank you.

Ditto grazing boards.

And perhaps the most controversial unpopular food opinion as far as MN is concerned: The term "Picky Bits/Picky Tea" should be banned. It sounds twee and irritates me greatly. Have a picnic, have a grazing board or buffet if you really must but no fully fledged adult should be referring to their food as "picky".

Gosh I love cooking but lasagne is the biggest ballache ever. So many pans. It's one of the few things on my 'eat when out because I CBF when at home' list.

Fish pie is a slighter lesser ball ache, but worth it. Mine is, anyway. 🙂

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/01/2024 12:07

I forgot fennel - the only vegetable I won’t eat.
It tastes vile.

MooseBreath · 22/01/2024 12:07

The addition of cabbage makes every dish inedible.

White wine tastes like vomit.

Steak is flavourless and has the texture of playdough that's been left out for a week.

Roast dinners are overrated.

SpursFan2 · 22/01/2024 12:17

SouthEastCoast · 21/01/2024 20:19

Roast potatoes suck

🤯🤯 really? That’s sacrilege to think that @SouthEastCoast. What do you dislike about them? I love them 😍😍😍

StockpotSoup · 22/01/2024 12:45

and chickpeas are awful

You'd hate me 😄 I love a tin of chickpeas as a snack. I have to buy tons of the things, because if I want to add a tin to a casserole or a curry, I’ve eaten half of them within seconds of draining them 🤭
