I’m curious to hear everyone’s unpopular food opinions

AIBU to find lasagna massively overrated.

Ready meal lasagna is point blank rank.
Using jars of sauce makes an alright lasagna but nothing to hype about.
Making it from scratch is by far the tastiest option, but it is just so much effort to make a tomato based sauce while simultaneously making a cheese sauce and then layering to then have to wait for it to cook in the oven!
I’ve never actually had lasagna from a restaurant as it could be very nice but there’s always something that I fancy more.

What is everyone else’s unpopular food opinions?

Sourdough bread is overrated

Shock

Chilli makes food inedible and it is really hard to find a menu which has not had half the dishes ruined by including it. Why is it in so much!
Lamb tastes rancid, as does goats cheese.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 22/01/2024 08:53

Spongy soft light bread is a waste of time. Especially while.

Catsmere · 22/01/2024 08:57

Toast that's burned enough to need to be scraped tastes awful (and by the time it's been scraped it's too cool to eat anyway).

Sushi....come on no one really likes it they just pretend.

Completely agree. “Ooh, some squares of cold rice wrapped in uncooked fish - yum! And it’s only £6.95 for four tiny pieces in a plastic box!”

What restaurants are you going to that has chilli in half the dishes?

Have you asked if it can be omitted out?

Yorkshire puddings are over rated
Cheese ruins a burger

The Yorkshire puddings one was what I came to say. There’s nothing wrong with them as such - they just take up room on my plate and in my stomach that could have been filled with extra spuds and veg, which will always be better.

To be fair, that is really the whole reason that Yorkshire puddings exist. They take up space in your stomach so you won’t want to eat as much of the more expensive stuff. 🤣

Many people balance them on top of stuff to get round the taking up half the plate issue. Almost the only thing is find vaguely enjoyable about carveries is observing how people try to pile as much of the poorly cooked (from frozen) veg on to their plates.

NahHumBrag · 22/01/2024 09:52

I’ve never had a cake that’s worth the calories.

Grazing boards with meat nestled next to strawberries (for example) are revolting.

Londongent · 22/01/2024 10:00

Bacon does not belong on a burger.

Burgers served in pubs are too thick.

Chunky chips are not an upgrade on fries

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 22/01/2024 10:13

Burgers are better without cheese, it covers up the taste of the meat.
Buns for burgers and hotdogs should always be toasted, no exceptions.

Another unpopular opinion (related to the above) is that I hate frozen veg. I don’t care if it supposedly maintains nutrient levels. Freezing almost any vegetable ruins the texture so I don’t want to eat it, meaning that I have no interest in eating it.

The worst frozen veg I ever had was frozen asparagus. It was in special on Lidl and I thought it might work in risotto. It did not 🤮 It somehow managed to be stringy and gloopy at the same time.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 22/01/2024 10:17

Beans, lentils etc. are delicious and people are silly not to eat them.

Oh that sounds horrendous.

Big frozen veg tries to reel you in with promises of retaining more nutrients etc. But the textural trade offs are not worth it. You may as well buy a tin.

phoenixrosehere · 21/01/2024 20:43

Why would they be?!

Steak with peas and grilled tomatoes?

Redlarge · 22/01/2024 10:32

I agree on champagne not being very nice. But then i dont like any fizzy wine 😒

Redlarge · 22/01/2024 10:33

QueSyrahSyrah · 21/01/2024 21:05

Cauliflower cheese has absolutely no business on a roast.

Cheese also has no place on or near baked beans.

Outside of these specific scenarios cheese is always welcome.

You need therapy ha ha.

Steak with peas and grilled tomatoes?

Never seen it offered together anywhere, including steakhouses.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/01/2024 10:42

White chocolate is the work of Satan.

Oysters are horrible unless cooked. There’s a very good reason why in Dickens’ time they were considered poor people’s food.

Goat’s cheese smells and tastes vile.
Aubergines are vastly overrated.

Tea with milk tastes vile - to me, anyway, which just goes to show how people’s taste buds can differ.

Redlarge · 22/01/2024 10:43

Poppysmom22 · 22/01/2024 07:15

Pickled cauliflower is the food of the gods.

Oooh, I'd probably like this. I've never heard of it before, but i like it in piccalilli

spagbolrules · 22/01/2024 10:44

I love chocolate and nuts on their own but together in a Snickers is disgusting.
Malibu takes like suntan lotion
Prosecco is vile
Fajitas are tasty but a pain in the arse to eat.

I love sprouts!
Love spaghetti bolognaise (hence the username) but can't get excited about lasagne for some reason. Just doesn't have the same effect

Redlarge · 22/01/2024 10:44

Goats cheese smells and tastes of poo. proper cider has a silage throw back.
