I’m curious to hear everyone’s unpopular food opinions

AIBU to find lasagna massively overrated.

Ready meal lasagna is point blank rank.
Using jars of sauce makes an alright lasagna but nothing to hype about.
Making it from scratch is by far the tastiest option, but it is just so much effort to make a tomato based sauce while simultaneously making a cheese sauce and then layering to then have to wait for it to cook in the oven!
I’ve never actually had lasagna from a restaurant as it could be very nice but there’s always something that I fancy more.

What is everyone else’s unpopular food opinions?

Steak is overrated. One thing I never eat, don't like it
And everyone is horrified when I say this Confused

Paw2024 · 22/01/2024 01:21

Also fruit doesn't belong in chocolate or cheese

Cheese with an apple yes
Cheese with fruit in.. no
Chocolate.. why would I want my chocolate diluting down with raisins or something

A home-made fatball makes for a tasty late evening snack.

😅😅😅

Imnotthemonalisa · 22/01/2024 01:33

Cheese. Just why?
Butter with jam. No!
Pasta is pointless.

Dirty Fen celery is wonderful during it's short season, you can't begin to imagine the difference in taste.

I think I have a genetic variation in how I smell/taste celery. It smells like very stale BO and tastes like some kind of industrial cleaner. I can’t have it in the house due to the smell.

coxesorangepippin · 22/01/2024 01:54

I hate patisserie type food

Total waste of calories

Give me a proper slab of actual cake made with flour and eggs

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 22/01/2024 01:59

Spaghetti, noodles, vermicelli and all other similar long pasta shapes: it saves a lot of stress if you break it into tiny pieces before it goes in the saucepan. Cooks faster too.

RobertaFirmino · 22/01/2024 02:00

Chicken skin. Bloody revolting.
Bone broth/HM carcass stock. Stinks the whole house out and tastes greasy.
Any kind of meat fat. Even bacon rind, crispy or otherwise. Burgers get blotted on kitchen roll and mince gets everything drained off.

kisstheblarney · 22/01/2024 02:05

Beetroot tastes like soil

Mash potatoes is the food of the devil!

OnlyTheBravest · 22/01/2024 02:08

Chicken and cheese together. Nope
Curdles my stomach.

Catsmere · 22/01/2024 02:10

Did I midd it, or has nobody mentioned Brussels sprouts? My sister says she can only taste the soil they grew in and I agree with her. I think I've tasted quite decent ones once. Which is odd because all the awful ones were made by the same cook!

(eta of course disliking B. Sprouts is far from unpopular, so not the purpose of the thread! 😚)

I really hate truffle

Just the word makes mt mouth water!

Porridgeislife · 22/01/2024 06:11

Sunday Roast is just meh, it’s a weeknight meal in terms of flavour & interest. I’ve been to loads of pubs & restaurants for Sunday lunch from village to high end and have never had one that I’d choose over eg a steak with fries & bearnaise.

Smoked salmon is unbearably slimy.

Barley in soups makes it taste of wet dog.

Apart from that I eat everything 😅

SummaLuvin · 21/01/2024 22:29

Given it was first popularised by the royals in the mid-1800s then you must be really rather old if this tradition confuses you. Do you take similar issue with the roast potatoes since potatoes aren’t a native crop?

The royals were importing turkeys back in Tudor times but It was far too expensive for anyone other than the fabulously wealthy to eat them until very recently. It doesn't confuse me, I just don't see it as very British or traditional and as roughly 50% of Brits don't eat turkey at Christmas, many agree with me.

confusedbythesystem · 21/01/2024 21:22

Chicken should be a lot more expensive than it is. It shouldn't be the default option for 90% of supermarket and takeaway sandwiches. All the fried chicken shops should be shut down.

Respect the chicken! Eat less, buy better, cook more!

Totally agree!!

hopscotcher · 22/01/2024 07:03

Instant coffee is nicer than real 😀

Muchof · 22/01/2024 07:08

My unpopular opinion is that cheese sauce has no place in lasagne al forno; ragù, lasagne, bechamel, repeat until the dish is full. Dust with parmesan on the top if you must.

That is not an unpopular opinion. Lasagne is not made with cheese sauce, I whined when I read that in the first post. 😁

Pickled cauliflower is the food of the gods.

Problem is probably your poor cooking of English food. Are other countries' food choices open for blanket dismissal or would one be on the naughty step?

Some countries definitely have better food traditions than others, that is undeniable. That’s why there are so many excellent French, Italian, Japanese, Thai, Chinese, Turkish, Indian restaurants everywhere in the world, whereas you see very few German, Canadian, Irish, Russian or Bulgarian ones. There’s no need to be parochial about this - I’m British and Canadian myself. That doesn’t mean all British food is bad, but as a whole it’s not very interesting.

Of course food is also associated with emotions, memories and so on, so you will find comfort in the dishes you had as a child, but that doesn’t make it objectively good food.

It’s a mix of technique, availability and quality of ingredients, and knowing how to use spices and herbs. You only have to eat raw produce in the south of France to instantly know that what we grow here does not compare, because we don’t have the climate for it. Most BBC Good food recipes are woefully underseasoned - apple crumble without nutmeg or cinnamon, just why?

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 22/01/2024 07:20

Margarine, lurpak or any kind of "spread" are abominations.
Mayonnaise is disgusting, unsalted butter shouldn't even be sold.
Most ketchup, brown sauce and bbq sauce just taste like sugar syrup with a little bit of flavouring.
Most juices, squashes and sodas taste bad.
99% of bread sold in the UK is not even real food.
No chicken on pizza, ever.
Takeaways are never nice. I could go on...

0rganisedchaos · 21/01/2024 20:41

Tomato ketchup is the devils work

This!! I'm so glad france banned the stuff. If I was in charge I would too

JMSA · 22/01/2024 07:28

Cheese is horrid BlushShock

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 22/01/2024 07:46

Fresh egg pasta does not have a nice taste or texture.
Red meat should never be served less than medium rare unless the diner is immuno compromised.
Sushi with beef is just as good if not better than fish.
Tomatoes are literally the best food in the world.
Crunchy peanut butter is appalling.
Raw onions or garlic are always never called for.
Goats milk tastes nicer than cow milkm

MrsHughesPinny · 22/01/2024 07:53

Sushi is disgusting and don’t even get me started on ceviche.

Westfacing · 22/01/2024 07:54
