To think he’s choosing to be homeless and it’s right that he doesn’t get a housing association property?

Man works 50hrs a week. At minimum wage that’s 27k and about £1900 take-home each month. He sleeps at friends’ houses or his ex-partner’s, presumably for free. Why can’t he just get a room in a house share (under £600 a month in Glasgow) and save up a deposit for a flat?

I'm working but homeless and bottom of the housing list

A working father finds himself "sofa surfing" amid social housing shortages in Scotland's biggest city.

Agents have very tight criteria. Deposit, credit check and guarantor as a minimum. In addition to a landlord’s reference.

Edited

Thats usually for a self contained flat or house though, he could get a house share, there are plenty on spareroom.com

He may be paying to keep his belongings in storage and for child support. Or for his ex's accommodation. There are all sorts of outgoings that he might have. He may be paying towards the utilities he uses at the friends' houses he stays at and obviously he still has to pay for food and transport etc.

Apart from the cost of storage - if he is using that - none of those things are the cost of being homeless are they

@soupfiend lots of house shares though are situations like my sons were the flat was originally through an agent, so if 1 person leaves the new person is on contract and still goes through the agents criteria- computer says no and all that humph and lots of young trendy professionals want someone similar to them too - and they certainly don't want a guy bringing his child back.

@VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia in many countries you cannot buy unless you have been resident for quite a lot of years abd that doesn't include buying by hastily arranged 'companies' - you cannot buy just to let it sit there or 'let out' - half the problems in this country are because we have become like the Wild West when it comes to being allowed to buy into UK assets- with minimal conditions or checks

Dh heard not long ago from a half-Danish bloke at one of his professional meet-ups, that foreigners in Denmark are not allowed to buy property at all. The bloke added that if they were allowed, so much would very quickly be bought up by Germans, but since they can’t legally exclude only Germans, they say ‘no foreigners’ instead.

The bloke was miffed that despite being half Danish, he wasn’t allowed to buy property either.
Pity we don’t have such a law here!

Yes this. For some countries it is still possible to buy as a non-resident but read the small print and there are punitive taxes that effectively prevent flipping properties in a rising market to make a fast buck, or land banking.

I agree there's a lack of housing but who would build this amount of houses and flood the market? Labour, land and materials are expensive. Companies want the max return on investments. As a business modal it makes no sense.

I can't see the government deciding to build that amount of affordable homes because it wouldn't be popular with voters. So much personal wealth is tied up in property, people don't want to pay increased taxes etc.

That's without even considering the land issues, lack of trained tradesmen etc.

This is likely one of the reasons that hostility has actually INCREASED towards social housing tenants SINCE Grenfell. Certain groups were scared it would effect change (even though we know it wont) and that it would hit them in the wallet/decrease the value of THEIR home!

If he doesn't have a settled existing address for picking up his mail, that causes problems too. A PO Box often isn't enough.

I think being homeless would be expensive, using a laundrette for clothes. Buying takeaway food as no kitchen access. Possibly paying for a gym/ swim so you can have a decent wash. Maybe giving the people he stays with some cash or gifts so they continue to welcome him.

Thats a joint tenancy situation

Im talking about renting a room, a lodger arrangement.

I thought he was staying at friends houses, sofa surfing. Why would he be going to the gym to wash and use a launderette?

I would hope he does pay towards utilities and food where he is staying, thats normal but still wouldnt be as much as rent is.

You obviously live a very privileged lifestyle and have no clue how difficult it is for some people.

This man is working 50 hours a week and cannot find affordable housing.
There are thousands of people like him in his situation.

When I was looking for homes to rent it was very difficult trying to save up the money to get a deposit and then most landlords didn’t want to know as they wanted someone with a much higher income or 2 incomes.

Would you rather he gave up his job and just rely on benefits?

If he relied on benefits he would never get a place to rent, no one takes people on benefits and he wouldn't be any higher up the list as most associations put working people higher.

Cos he works in a chip shop and his clothes stink after work?

If he's sofa surfing so has to get out at certain times then move to a different place, don't presume he can wash and dry his clothes in one night.

It says he’s asking people to stay a night or two and doesn’t know where he will be sleeping. That suggests to me he’s staying with multiple people. It’s embarrassing enough asking to stay with someone for a night or two without turning up smelly with a bag of dirty laundry.
