To think he’s choosing to be homeless and it’s right that he doesn’t get a housing association property?

Man works 50hrs a week. At minimum wage that’s 27k and about £1900 take-home each month. He sleeps at friends’ houses or his ex-partner’s, presumably for free. Why can’t he just get a room in a house share (under £600 a month in Glasgow) and save up a deposit for a flat?

I'm working but homeless and bottom of the housing list

A working father finds himself "sofa surfing" amid social housing shortages in Scotland's biggest city.

He has a daughter so maybe an HMO isn’t good for that. I don’t think it’s particularly fair to judge someone’s entire existence from a few lines on a news article. And you don’t know if he has debt etc, his take home might significantly less after his essential outgoings.

The child is adequately housed with her mother and they clearly get on well enough for him to stay there regularly.

If there’s other relevant facts about his situation, they should be in the news story. As it is, he’s being a choosing beggar.

I think you sound incredibly judgemental in all honesty.

Okay. But do you think he shouldn’t be at the bottom of the housing list, as an able-bodied, relatively young man without dependents?

I felt the same when I read this story today. Maybe we don't know the full story or it's bad journalism. He could get a room in a shared house short term surely.

NotMyFirstChoiceofName · 21/01/2024 18:43

Don’t worry, he won’t get a housing association property. Glasgow has over 900 people in B and Bs and hundreds of them will have higher priority than a working single man.

Every Monday the list gets longer as the Home Office approve even more refugees and they all turn up and present as homeless. The Government only fund their accommodation for 7 days now the covid money has stopped and then it’s up to local authorities. Thats why they are going bankrupt - Glasgow City Council is more than £17M in debt.

Sparklesocks · 21/01/2024 18:44

I’m not saying he should be priority against people with disabilities, young children etc but I think writing him off as just a greedy chancer looking for a handout is unfair. People don’t tend to sofa surf long term if they can avoid it, it’s very demoralising not to have the stability of a place to stay. It’s awful is that someone who works full time (and long hours at that) can’t afford to live in the city that has been their home. I’m not saying whack him to the top by any means, it’s just a sad state of affairs.

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 21/01/2024 18:46

He does have a dependant. Rents are incredibly expensive now. A two bed flat ( so he can have his daughter stay) can be completely out of reach for people working full time jobs. 1k+ rent plus bills, ct, commuting costs and food plus maintenance. The sums just don’t add up. We should definitely be investing in social housing rather than propping up high rents via uc.

I’ve worked with the homeless for many many years.

the world is getting bad. There’s double the people on the streets in the last few months and it’s likely to get worse….

Cerealkiller4U · 21/01/2024 18:48

Rents have sky rocketed. Mortgages have sky rocketed and someone earning that wage won’t get far.

I guess that getting a deposit together is a big factor. What a society we live in when hard working people can’t get an affordable place to live.

mamacorn1 · 21/01/2024 18:52

Renters are selling up as they have lost a lot of rights for their own properties, sadly this is leading to homelessness as there are less rentals in most areas.

PotentialQuitter · 21/01/2024 18:55

Presumably he also has child maintenance to pay.

tempnameforadvice · 21/01/2024 18:55

50hrs doesn't mean he's getting paid for all 50 hours.

Also - judgemental much?

Casparr · 21/01/2024 18:55

His daughter isn’t classed as a dependent or he’d be higher priority. She doesn’t rely on him for housing.

I can’t say I know Glasgow well but I’ve just looked on Rightmove and there’s over 100 2-bed flats, across the city, for under £800. So yes, he can afford to rent somewhere big enough for himself and his daughter. He could easily save enough for a deposit by living in a house-share for six months.

NotMyFirstChoiceofName · 21/01/2024 18:57

There are studio flats and one beds to rent in Glasgow for under £600. Of course he’d need a deposit which would be around £900. So yes that’s a lot but if he’s sofa surfing as he says and paying no rent on wages of £27,000 its possible to save.

No of course he doesn’t need a 2 bed to have his child to stay, kids can sleep on sofas or inflatable beds for a night.

MrsMarzetti · 21/01/2024 18:57

He is making the point that as a working man here in Scotland he has no chance of getting on the housing list and is way below people that haven't paid a penny into our system.

JMSA · 21/01/2024 18:59

Why can't he pay rent on a room in a shared house, or am I missing something?
Yes, he wouldn't be able to have his daughter overnight. But he can't currently do that anyway, so might as well be safe and warm.

Livelovebehappy · 21/01/2024 18:59

Combination of landlords getting out of the letting business due to so many unworkable rules in place massively favouring the tenants, lack of building social housing and the massive influx of refugees over the last few years. And to top it all, no political party in sight who are going to resolve any of the above. Society is broken, and will only get worse.

NotMyFirstChoiceofName · 21/01/2024 19:02

Someone who takes home £1,900 / month should able to rent a small place in Glasgow. I suspect we are not getting the full story here.

Brefugee · 21/01/2024 19:03

Careful hoiking those judgy pants up so high! OP, you'll get a nasty rash

But will he? Presumably that’s only an option if he has travelled over on a boat from Calais to Dover, not on the 2.30 from Glasgow to Dover…

Yeah yeah…

go work in that area and report back how easy housing is….

Summerhillsquare · 21/01/2024 19:03

How did we get to a point where we are picking apart the life of a young working man because he has the temerity to complain about the utterly broken housing market?! In what shitty world should an adult not be entitled to a home of their own?
