To think there shouldn't be measles outbreaks?

Surely we shouldn't be having an issue with measles?
Had an email from school (secondary) 'reminding' us to keep kids off with measles, which got me thinking

All my kids band my friends kids of the same age had their MMR (however my youngest did get measles before this)

So why is it an issue in secondary schools of all places? Are people just not vaccinating their kids?

I home educate my child and unfortunately there are plenty of nutjob anti vaxxers in the community, I know three personally. They are thick as shit tbh.

Setyoufree · 20/01/2024 07:29

You can't vaccinate against croup 🙄

Charlieradioalphapapa · 20/01/2024 07:31

HardcoreLady I had no idea Andrew Wakefield had invested in a single dose vaccine. That explains why that was being touted.

BBC article:

Dr Syed said "fewer and fewer people" were receiving immunisations due to "various communities" holding "various beliefs around measles".

“There are some Muslim communities who have concerns around the MMR, because one of the MMR vaccines does have ingredients derived from pork," he said.

“However there are other vaccines available, that do not have any pork or pork derivate ingredients in them, which are perfectly safe to be given."

Id heard on the news that it was concentrated in some areas but had missed why, that makes a lot more sense than anything to do with Andrew Wakefield.

IDontWantToBeAPieIDontLikeGravy · 20/01/2024 07:32

I remember mumps going round when I was at university 10-15 years ago because our cohort had low uptake of the MMR because of the Wakefield issue.
I was given my recommended vaccines as a child, but just had one dose of MMR - I discovered this when I needed travel vaccines in my early 20s and went to the GP for the second one, but if one dose was normal in the late 80s/early 90s then there’s a whole group of people likely to be more susceptible.

Iheartmysmart · 20/01/2024 07:32

I’m in my 50s and for some reason never had my Rubella vaccine for German measles. Which I then caught in my 20s. It seemed fairly mild at first but then the joint pain started. I could barely move. My mum used to straighten my fingers each morning as they’d claw up overnight. I was off work for the best part of a month with it. And that is much milder than actual measles.

In the kindest possible way I think you misheard there. There isn’t a vaccine against croup.

Kindly, I didn't mis hear anything.

I was just about to Google that as my children were never offered one, thanks for confirming

There do seem to be more anti-vaxxers (and anti science in general) folk who also home school - glad to hear there's also folk like you who do see the importance of vaccination though!

Sirzy · 20/01/2024 07:33

But you’re not vaccinating against croup. You can be fully vaccinated against everything and still get croup!

Maybe someone is confusing croup and whooping cough?

Edit - actually that text above does say 'some of the infections that can cause croup' (above the part in bold). @Sayingitstraight what is your source?

That doesn't say croup

DustyLee123 · 20/01/2024 07:35

It’s not only people in this country not vaccinating, it’s kids from other countries who were never offered it.

Meadowfinch · 20/01/2024 07:36

@Notevenslightlydamp People who don't vaccinate their children are NOT scum.

People who don't vaccinate their children are ignorant or foolish or misguided or even frightened. Certainly misinformed, but that doesn't mean they don't have their child's best interests at heart.

People have just been raised differently from us - differently educated or with different beliefs.

DS2 was due his preschool boosters during the pandemic, I had to really fight to get him an appointment. Because of limited appointments it took weeks of calling twice a week on the days appointments were released only to be told they were all gone. During one call the receptionist chastised me for wanting to bring him in and risk him catching Covid!! I wonder how many parents in my area forgot or gave up after calling.

In contrast they have made it very easy for me to get DS3 (3 months) vaccinated, the surgery has called me in advance to arrange the appointment and on both appointments he has been shown straight in. I think they must be concerned about low uptake.

I have no doubt concerns about the covid jab have lead people to question all vaccines.

Unicorntastic · 20/01/2024 07:38

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 20/01/2024 06:56

People who choose not get their kids vaccinated are the issue. The thing is, none of them are aware how serious diseases like measles can be because previous widespread vaccination has dramatically decreased the number of serious cases. They don't seem to realise why vaccines were developed for these illnesses to start with.

This is very true, i even had the GP receptionist tell me it wasnt contagious once (luckily it turned out not be measles) and same situation last year that there was nothing they could do if it was measles!
no wonder it is increasing

Another outcome of the pandemic

Exactly this!

Yes, it is by far the biggest downside of home education for us.

Sanabria2 · 20/01/2024 07:38

Croup is inflammation of the larynx/upper respiratory tract isn't it? It can be caused by a range of different viruses.

VoluptuaSneezelips · 20/01/2024 07:39

fatandhappy47 · 20/01/2024 06:46

Exactly this.

My other half is deaf with some auto-immune issues and almost permanent tinnitus because of complications (encephalitis) from childhood Measles. Not having the vaccinations was a big source of guilt for my late MIL. Especially as her dad was blind from having caught Measles at 6 weeks old. Partner also has a neurological disorder too which causes involuntary muscle spasms/muscles locking so he can't move them which has in recent years been linked to encephalitis.

He is very for Vaccinations, he says the complications of the vaccines are nothing in comparison to the complications from the illnesses they protect against. He gets very angry at anti vax parents. He also told me that he feels so strong about it that he would have left me and filed for custody if I not decided to have our kids fully vaccinated.

I really think any parents deciding against it should talk to people like my partner. The struggles he had growing up and even now as a 45yr old adult, in particular the bullying. An one that surprises people is his rejection from the deaf community as he has severe loss but has full speech as he was 8 when he lost his hearing.

TrashedSofa · 20/01/2024 07:39

Looks like yet another situation where the experience of the pandemic has exacerbated a problem that already existed.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 20/01/2024 07:40

Part of me wants us to bring in a rule that you can't enrol at a nursery or school without proof of vaccine or an exemption certificate from a medical professional if you can't have the vaccine for a medical reason. But then I think these kids are already being failed by feckless, stupid parents and they probably need nursery and school to give them any hope in life.

SlipperyLizard · 20/01/2024 07:40

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 20/01/2024 07:20

Adults can still get vaccines - someone maybe needs to gently inform them of their non-vaccinated status and the risks to them and potential children. There are no homeopathic vaccines (I'm thinking you already know that but some folk may not).

I only ever meet the family in passing, so not an opportunity I will have. Perhaps the media coverage will alert them - I think it was the Wakefield/autism lies that put them off, but that surely can’t be a risk for an adult. He has a lot to answer for!

Of course a homeopathic MMR is nonsense, all homeopathy is but the idea of a homeopathic vaccine is truly dangerous.

Fliopen · 20/01/2024 07:41

It really does infuriate me though. I heard one parent say her child was not vaccinated and yet "he's never sick". I pointed out that the reason her child probably wouldn't get one of the horrible illnesses prevented by vaccination is because other people DO bother to get their kids vaccinated. Didn't go down well, I'm a shill for "big pharma" apparently. Mind you this is the woman who refused to have ultrasounds during her pregnancy because they would be damaging for the baby, and thinks you get cancer because your inner child is wounded.

I love home education but the main sticking point is the prevalence of people like that in the community!
