To think there shouldn't be measles outbreaks?

fatandhappy47 · 20/01/2024 06:39

Surely we shouldn't be having an issue with measles?
Had an email from school (secondary) 'reminding' us to keep kids off with measles, which got me thinking

All my kids band my friends kids of the same age had their MMR (however my youngest did get measles before this)

So why is it an issue in secondary schools of all places? Are people just not vaccinating their kids?

the author of the “study” is from the

, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai,

😂

Eh?

Mount Sinai is a very well-funded and well-respected medical school and group of research hospitals in New York. The Mount Sinai hospital on the Upper East Side is the oldest teaching hospital in the USA.

yes and gets millions from an autism foundation

it is a medical school that gets millions from an autism foundation

and do your research on the foundation!!

MyopicBunny · 22/01/2024 08:50

There is loads of evidence. There are a lot of studies, particularly in recent years. I know two sets of identical twins who all have autism. In my autistic community I know a family where both parents are autistic and 9/10 of their children have autism. In my own case, of me and my 4 children 4/5 of us have autism.

KvotheTheBloodless · 22/01/2024 08:52

CrispyFries · 21/01/2024 23:45

That’s not evidence of no link. I am sure you know that some people get lung cancer who have never smoked in their lives. Does that prove there is no link between smoking and lung cancer? I don’t think anyone has ever claimed that autism is ONLY cause by vaccines. My own opinion is that the extremely high temps and seizures caused by some vaccines cause brain damage that goes on to be diagnosed as autism. I have no way of investigating it or proving it. It’s observational, like your observations which don’t prove anything either.

But surely you can read the peer-reviewed academic studies that have shown that there really isn't a link?

You really need to fill in the dots here rather expect people to follow your own reasoning. Because most people would expect that a hospital which gets a lot of money to do research into a specific condition is therefore a reliable source on that condition. We're not expecting Great Ormond Street to be secretly campaigning to increase childhood leukaemia rates to make more income.

Whatever your stance on vaccines. I don’t think the amount of confirmed cases is anything to worry about!

Wakefield was a crook.
He was being retained as an expert witness by families who wanted to sue for vaccine damage (that is, there was £££ in it for him)
He wanted to patent his own measles-only vaccine (more £££)
He refused to carry out a proper double-blind study when he was offered the chance to do so (can't imagine why...)
Just look the bloke up on Wikipedia or read Brian Deer's book.

Measles can be a terrible illness. I had it very severely as a young child. My DC were little at the height of the Wakefield scandal but I took a look at the details of the Lancet paper and notes the small sample size, the self-selected nature of the sample and the lack of a control group, and gave all my DC the MMR.

I've lived in countries where I saw the aftermath of polio in numerous people (begging in the streets). Also seen active TB. Vaccination is a wonderful thing.

Hardly an outbreak 🙄

That's what people said about Covid in February 2020. And measles is a hell of a lot more contagious than Covid.

You do realise that the reason there were fewer autistic children in times gone by is that we knew much less about it and therefore far fewer people who had it were diagnosed, don't you?

bellabasset · 22/01/2024 09:09

Well they did and you're quite welcome to my pain if you don't believe me. I can't carry anything heavy, manage housework etc.

RampantIvy · 22/01/2024 09:10

@dottty123 anecdata isn't well researched scientific evidence Hmm

As a teacher's side I would expect you to be better educated.

I don't understand these parents. I had measles as a child (pre MMR). It was horrendous. I was so weak at one point my parents had to carry me to the toilet. Took me months to recover properly. I know 2 people who are partially deaf as a result of having measles.

Yes,I had it too at 10, 6 weeks off school,it was horrendous.

Why have you written this in Haiku form?
Wakefield is a fucking arsehole.
Your hearsay does not trump actual evidence.

paulhollywoodshairgel · 22/01/2024 09:23

My grandma told me about a family in her street once. They had 6 children and there was a measles outbreak in the area.. only one child survived. How can people not vaccinate. It boggles my mind. I spent some time in the USA as a nanny and the parents there were shocked that we don't vaccinate against chicken pox and that you can enrol kids in childcare settings without a full vaccination schedule. The state I was in would at allow enrolment without it.

Schools being measle-free is a sign of civilisation. The UK abandoned that when deciding European measures were unnecessary for them.

I don't think it has anything about "European measures"!

Natsku · 22/01/2024 09:33

frecklejuice · 22/01/2024 08:04

Just so everyone knows you can have your MMR on the NHS even as an adult.

My Mum was adamant that I had mine (born in 1979) but the nurse flagged it up at my smear test and said I hadn’t ever had it as there was no record. She offered me it and I said yes as apparently having it twice isn’t a problem, I then had to go back two weeks later for the second lot.

Month or so later my Mum found my vaccination card in the loft and I had had it so no idea why it wasn’t on my record.

Yeah I got my MMR when I started university because my mum couldn't remember whether I had got it as a child or not because it was during the Wakefield time. Later found out that I did get it as a child but nevermind, just got extra protected!

It's MN bingo.

Blame the religious, blame Brexit; I'm just waiting for someone to shoehorn in a post blaming the trans community

(and yes of course it's utterly and completely unrelated to "European measures")

Sennelier1 · 22/01/2024 09:58

@lieselotte and @FuckeryOmbudsman : where I live (northern Europe) you don't get your child into (pre)school without proof of vaccination. That's why I think in the UK it's Brexit that makes the difference - other rules. My excuses if it isn't.

the reason there wasn’t many children with autism in the 60 was due to the fact it was undiagnosed and kept secret as it was seen as a shame on the family. There are a number adults born in the 60s/70s who are now being diagnosed as we have a better understanding than before.

It has nothing to do with MMR which your nurse neighbour would actually know. Often people who can’t handle their child being autistic look for something to blame rather than accept that is how their child is.

he was trying to promote the single vaccine has he had links to it hence trying to discredit the MMR.

You're talking utter bollocks @CrispyFries

If you're actually interested in being educated (which I'm sure you're not) then P15/16 of this would be a good place to start https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5e021b9140f0b6665e80187b/Greenbook_chapter_21_Measles_December_2019.pdf

It’s majorly down to the fact that the Muslim community do not want the vaccine because it contains pork gelatine. There is a vaccine which omits this but it is not widely known about I guess. Not sure why people haven’t read about this.

this is a relatively small issue, and there's a non porcine version available
