Both names are awful, too <misses the point, whatever the point was>

There is one letter difference in the entire name? How can you not see how it is similar?

The similarity ends there - they don't sound anything like each other and even written down they look different.

Azaliya Diamond Cain
Aliyas Diamond Cain

Yeah, completely different. Obviously.

I can’t believe anyone with an ounce of empathy wouldn’t see how hurtful that would be for the mother.

soupfiend · 19/01/2024 06:51

Man gives his child a name that means something to him - shocker

If you do any degree of family history OP, you'll see that people lost children a lot in the 17 and 1800s. They then renamed the next one that came along as the same name as the dead child.

People were also widowed regularly and then would go on to have children with same names as children they lost with their previous wife/husband.

Not newsworthy.

soupfiend · 19/01/2024 06:53

Aliyas
Azaylia

Totally different names IMO

Oh, now Ive read this

So not the same name. At all

Queijo · 19/01/2024 06:40

I see the mumsnet nasties are out in full force. Don’t you ever have a day off?

If someone basically named their new baby after my dead child I would 100% find that very fucking odd. Anyone saying otherwise (the name is not similar??? Are you hard of reading??) with the very annoying faux ignorance must have absolutely zero empathy.

Try reading the names outloud rather than going by some of the letters they contain being the same

Surname is irrelevant
Middle name is a family name
First name- NOT SIMILAR

Are you really trying to make a joke out of a dead child’s name? Because I hope I’m missing the point of your comment.

One has an S. One has a Z. One has three As. One is longer. One has twice as many syllables as the other. They don't rhyme. They aren't pronounced at all similar. There is nothing similar about them.

It’s not a joke. I think both names are crap choices, whatever the situation. I don’t know who any of these people are or what the context is, and I don’t care.

duckpancakes · 19/01/2024 06:59

And to be honest if I were the mum of the deceased I would probably feel all sorts of emotions that he now has a newborn but it wouldn't be the name that triggered this.

Blueberry911 · 19/01/2024 07:00

To all the people saying it's so so so so different, enough people think it's too similar (look at his insta!) and I think that's the point. A lot of people think it's disrespectful, so obviously there's something there, whether you agree or not.

Written, at a glance, it looks INCREDIBLY similar. If you don't think so, you have amazing eyesight/the fastest reading skills, good for you.

catelynjane · 19/01/2024 07:00

@Queijo the surname is irrelevant. He can't help his surname 🙄

The middle name is a family name and again, pretty irrelevant. Loads of children in the same family share a middle name.

The two first names sound nothing alike even if the letters are similar. If the other child was still alive would you be all het up about the names?

So go and do something far more interesting with your very important time than waste it on being nasty for the sake of it?

Instagram comment sections aren't exactly a reflection of real life. People say what will get them noticed.

You don't care? Well someone's child passed away from a long struggle with cancer in their short life, so I hope you feel like a tit for trying to be funny for no reason.

I was about to say this. I was doing some family history, and the same name was given to three babies in one family (siblings) in the 1840s, because the first two died very young.

MrsMurphyIWish · 19/01/2024 07:03

My DS and his cousin share the same middle name (DH’s late father’s name) and surname. Both first names start with the same letter and include some of the same letters. I didn’t realise it was something I should be raging about.

You spelled the dead child's name wrong. It's Azaylia.

Azaylia
Aliyas

If you've been saying it wrong in your head then maybe that's why you think they are similar.

Still.. not nice to see comments on her insta post of a newborn baby saying things like "vile"

I assume you’ve never had to experience how horrific child loss is, and how painful it would be for someone to name their child pretty much after yours.

It’s completely different if all the children are alive and well.

Ramalangadingdong · 19/01/2024 07:09

Surely a parent SHOULD be selfish when it comes to naming their child. His new child has nothing to do with the ex. And why shouldn’t he use his gran’s name?

If I was the ex I might well be upset but I would also know that it was nothing to do with me.
