Child on trampoline in the rain

If you looked out of your window and saw the child next door to you, in the pouring rain, running in the garden and jumping on the trampoline, what would you think?

OP posts:

I'd think brrr they're bonkers.

My kids play out in the rain and the freezing cold with only their football kits on. It's hell on earth trying to get them to wear any more but they insist they aren't cold / wet. They have a hot shower or bath when they get in and put their onesies on and all is right with the world.

We will not disintegrate in the rain!

My 7yo DS tells me this in a very authoritative voice. I'm not a sugar lump mum, I won't melt!
I'm sure he's got that from my mum!

bridesmaidconundrum · 18/01/2024 14:36

I agree that it’s a cultural thing; where I come from, children going out in the rain (or going out with wet hair) is considered a cardinal sin that can only end one way: with pneumonia, in hospital, on your death bed. And it’s far more socially acceptable to comment on other people’s parenting, which I hate. I’m also from southern Europe lol.

I had a real shock when I came to the UK and saw schoolchildren in shorts, playing sports in the rain, people leaving the house with wet hair… oh, and I thought my friend was insane when she suggested going for a walk with umbrellas when it was raining! I actually love going out in the rain now but it’s not what I grew up with.

loulouljh · 18/01/2024 14:40

My child did exactly that yesterday...with friends. Great to let off steam after school,

BriocheForBreakfast · 18/01/2024 14:44

Don't tell your neighbour what Scandinavian parents do with their babies. On second thoughts ...

elliejjtiny · 18/01/2024 14:45

I'd think they were similar to my dc.

HectorGloop · 18/01/2024 14:46

My DS isn’t interested in the trampoline but there isn’t rain wet enough, a temperature cold enough or dark dark enough to stop him playing football.

Yoyoban · 18/01/2024 14:48

Yabu to write such a vague first post with a poll without any indication of what is bu or nbu.

Yanbu to let your child play out in the rain, although I think I'd probably keep them off the trampoline due to injury risk

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea Southern Europe, this is cold though, rain and coats, jumpers weather

Not Italy, by any chance? ll raffreddore! I've been stopped many times by well meaning older ladies and men telling me I will be ill because I haven't got a thick coat on/am out with my hair wet etc etc.

MoonCharged · 18/01/2024 14:49

Mine have just been out and jumped on theirs in the snow. They had fun then came in and changed clothes... Hot chocolate and sat by the fire. Rain wouldn't bother them but they are a hardy bunch.

Thethingspeoplegetupto · 18/01/2024 13:47

@mealideas2024 No and I’d go mad if I was reported for that!

Child is now indoors very content after putting on warm pjs and having a hot chocolate, now watching the rainbow forming outside…terrible mother!

This sounds lovely, op. I hate rain but would love for my kids to not let any weather deter them from having fun outdoors so I drag us outside while silently dreading it.

And I love having a hot chocolate with the when we have braved bad weather. For me, that's always the best part!

Wetblanket78 · 18/01/2024 14:50

He's jumping on a trampoline having fun. Some kids like being out in the rain. My daughter always has. She likes to sit on the open top buses in the rain. We have waterproofs on. Everyone else is sat at the front where it's covered.🤣🤣🤣

Vettrianofan · 18/01/2024 14:51

Having fun. Exercising. Keeping fit. Increasing muscle tone which is important in children. All good.

nokidshere · 18/01/2024 14:53

I'd think the parents were mad, trampolines are dangerous enough when they are dry let alone unsupervised when the bed is wet. No issues at all with them being out in the rain. But not my child so not my problem.

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 18/01/2024 14:54

Doyouwantmejusttogo · 18/01/2024 13:57

I’d been very concerned. Because my next door neighbours are cows 😆

@Doyouwantmejusttogo

lucky you!!!

at least I can walk to some.

CookingFromScratchVirgin · 18/01/2024 14:55

They are having fun.
When we had that torrential rain we heard on the conservatory roof. The kids wanted to run out onto trampoline they had a blast! Dh had them a bath run ready to come in, warm bath, cosy pjs.
They repeatedly ask to do it again. Our NDN joined them.

God, all these responses of ‘it’s wonderful’, ‘it’s fine’ are such BS. All waiting with bated breath until someone dares to say it’d be concerning.

Clearly, it’d all very much depend on the wider context. If it was a child who otherwise I believed to be well cared for then I wouldn’t think anything of it at all. If I had even the remotest of concerns already about that child’s wellbeing (such as not being certain that they would be properly warmed up and redressed afterwards) then I’d be alarmed. Nothing happens in a vacuum, there’s always something else that informs our thoughts.

Please though, OP, tell us why you’ve posted something so bloody vague.

Edited

@orangesareorangey I agree

A child who I knew to be loved and well cared for? Great fun

Another child? Hmm, I'd wonder. Could be fun, could be neglect, could be sent outside by Mum for protection whilst abusive Dad is in the house

FuckBalledTwattyPiss · 18/01/2024 14:57

I'd think 'how nice to see a child amusing itself for a bit'.

JadziaD · 18/01/2024 14:58

Haha, I'm such a saddo the only thing I' doe thinking is, "ooh, she's a braver woman than me... I couldn't cope with the most rainy day play clean up!"

People are weird, just keep ignoring her.

rach2713 · 18/01/2024 15:01

Its no difference then playing in the snow. My kids have been out all morning came in had lunch and are going back out. Better them having fun playing together than stuck inside on game consoles or ipads.

kisstheblarney · 18/01/2024 15:04

I'd think on you were a great relaxed mother and not stupid enough to think that getting cold would make her sick!

Good for you and her......

But one thing.....

Did the hit choc have marshmallows on it? If not, I think SS involvement would be necessary.

Sunday12 · 18/01/2024 15:07

I’d think what fun! That’s good parenting. And, I wish I had a trampoline.

I once went outside at work because it started to rain torrentially and I wanted to stand in it. One of the young receptionists (she was lovely- we were friends) came out and said she would need to tell the manager. She was so shocked and thought I would be ill. I still laugh whenever I think of it. The threat to report me. I was 40

There is nothing like dancing in the rain, i taught my children from a young age!

ManchesterBea · 18/01/2024 15:24

Hooray for a child being a child.

CookStrait · 18/01/2024 15:27

I’d think the internet was down.
