AIBU - to think adults who get giddy about snow should grow up?

It causes disruption and travel problems. Nothing exciting about that. People miss crucial medical appointments for example. Don't whatever you do have a heart attack in a snow covered landscape.

On the other hand it looks cute out of the window.

I began to hate it when I was about 18 and looking back it coincided with travelling further afield and being able to drive.

What do you think?

Finding joy and wonder in nature is a wholly good thing.

Humans make it miserable.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 18/01/2024 19:06

Snow makes pavements and paths inaccessible to wheelchair users. They can be trapped indoors for days.

Genuine question - how exactly would being miserable about it change any of the negative impacts? We might as well make a cracking snowman while we're waiting for our rescheduled trains 😆

Abso-chuffing-lutely ⛄

Good point!

Some neighbourliness may help, if needed, sought or appreciated.

But unlike fireworks which many enjoy while others experience with extreme inconvenience, we can’t stop snow, and enjoying it doesn’t add to the frustration of others.

redheadsaregreat · 18/01/2024 20:04

Do you think people who love spring regardless of all the people who suffer seasonal allergies should grow up too? Do you think people should only love things that no one else has a problem with? What possible harm are people doing when they look out the window and smile when it's snowing. Their happiness doesn't create more snow. Is that what you think happens? Snow is produced in quantities that relate to the number of people who are happy about it?

That’s unfortunate. But how would people enjoying the snowfall change that?

Eleganz · 18/01/2024 20:14

Why can't people find a bit of joy in their lives? Why does everything have to be so grindingly grim enforced by a series of miserable killjoys who can't bear it when someone is not as miserable as them.

DoughnutA · 18/01/2024 21:23

its quite nice, abit after a while when its ice, not so much,

I don't think because someone doesn't find joy in one particular thing that they don't in other ways. It's very odd, one dimension.thinking. As it's odd to assume that because someone is gleefully going on about snow that makes me "miserable". No it doesn't. It's snow I don't like, not others' "joy" because I enjoy being "miserable".

I hate snow. It scares me. I have a job that entails driving and the consequences of being stuck somewhere and unable to get home or do my job would be more than just annoying or a bit disruptive.

If i had no commitments and lived in a place like Kate Winslet in The Holiday it might be a different view. Two weeks off work, loads of supplies in and a warm house, same.

This of course makes me Karen, killjoy, misery guts, dead soul (wtaf?) no fun at parties and the Grinch and all the rest.

@SwingTheMonkey No joke. My OP was general. Many of the replies, however are aimed at me personally calling me names including being a Karen, which has been debated on Mumsnet as being a misogynistic insult, and taking guesses as to my whole character, which really can't be deduced from the fact I don't like snow. Now that's a joke.

You were insulting, told people to grow up and stop being 'giddy' which is clearly a derogatory term. You need to just recognise that people will take offence at being put down over something that brings happiness to many whilst most of us can simultaneously concur that it has its downsides.

Yes but you said that people who do enjoy it and get giddy about it should grow up, and therefore ought to stop gleefully going on about it.

TheAverageJoanne · 18/01/2024 21:47

@Iwillletthemkniw I neither insulted anyone nor told anyone to grow up

I asked if I am being unreasonable to think that. Is a thought insulting?

If driving and snow is such an issue, could you change your job or move to a warmer country?

Snap! I thought I was going mad there for a minute! Must be all that childish snow going to my giddy little head ☺️

mathanxiety · 18/01/2024 22:26

Have you considered changing your name to WetBlanket?

Gymnopedie · 18/01/2024 22:27

But you didn't just think it, you voiced it. And started the thread in such a way that you were telling everyone to grow up, that enjoying snow shouldn't be allowed because it causes some problems.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 18/01/2024 19:06

Snow makes pavements and paths inaccessible to wheelchair users. They can be trapped indoors for days.

Only if neighbours sit on their hands instead of helping.

What's stopping them clearing snow off a path or going round with food or to offer company?

Snow is one thing but lack of neighbourliness is another altogether.

That's beautiful. Along similar lines, but even at 53 I can still hear the sleigh bell's ring (Polar Express reference).

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 18/01/2024 22:37

What do I think? I think it's weird to dictate what people should and shouldn't be excited about. Snow is pretty and can be fun. The world could do with more people being excited and made happy by simple things. Just because snow can be inconvenient for some people, that doesn't mean other people shouldn't enjoy it. Where's the harm? It's not as if people enjoying it makes it snow more on people who don't like it!

Do a course in safe snow driving, is what I think.

So you would be allowed to feel positive about snow if you were in a different position... but other people who are in a different position from the one you're in aren't allowed to like snow? That doesn't seem very reasonable!

MissersMercer · 18/01/2024 22:42

You sound like such a boring person. Do you not enjoy life?
