AIBU - to think adults who get giddy about snow should grow up?

It causes disruption and travel problems. Nothing exciting about that. People miss crucial medical appointments for example. Don't whatever you do have a heart attack in a snow covered landscape.

On the other hand it looks cute out of the window.

I began to hate it when I was about 18 and looking back it coincided with travelling further afield and being able to drive.

What do you think?

I think it’s my colleague from work. Miserable always.

NeedWineNow · 18/01/2024 16:33

I didn't like it when I was working. As a commuter to London from SE London and then Kent I lost count of the travel disruptions I had trying to get to/from work (this was pre-Covid when WFH wasn't permitted for the PAs and we were expected in the office whatever the weather). Certainly once we moved to Kent we discovered our train company would stop services at the mere mention of snow and that really caused problems with work.

Now that I've retired I love it! We live in a very well served village so I don't have to worry about driving to get shopping, and we can wrap up and walk out over the fields enjoying the views before ending up at the pub!

God I love AIBU!

It's a source of great amusement that for many posts, including this, that the replies telling the OP that they're miserable/nasty/horrible are 99% certain to be more miserable/nasty/horrible than the first post in the thread ever was ❄️❄️❄️

Why are you speaking about yourself in the third person?

I think that adults who've let go of being excited in favour of being practical are dead inside.

As PP said, to each their own, and that's mine.

I totally second this.... 😂

I’m not sure it’s possible to top the misery in your op…

Er, I'm not. I'm making a generalisation about AIBU and the way people pile on the numerous posters. I'd have thought the clue was in this snippet:

for many posts, including this,

AIBU serves a real purpose in particular as an outlet for those Mumsnetters who've never stopped being mean girls.

I absolutely love the snow! The second I even see even the first flicker of snow I get so hyped - luckily my boyfriend is the same. We go out and make snow men and snow angels and have a snow ball fight! I even have some presents stored in advance for when it's going to snow, so that we can have a second Christmas that is white.

This has to be a joke.

Your op was the epitome of ‘mean girl’.

Bax765 · 18/01/2024 17:38

But sitting inside being miserable about the snow won't stop any of the travel disruption etc?

Enjoying life, being excited and having fun is a good thing surely, at any age - why would you want to grow out of that?!

TheAverageJoanne · 18/01/2024 17:43

@SwingTheMonkey No joke. My OP was general. Many of the replies, however are aimed at me personally calling me names including being a Karen, which has been debated on Mumsnet as being a misogynistic insult, and taking guesses as to my whole character, which really can't be deduced from the fact I don't like snow. Now that's a joke.

If growing up means I'm not allowed to enjoy things that bring me joy, such as playing in the snow, Disney, using a colourful brolly in the rain, pissing about on GTA, then I don't want to. I want to be able to have fun and laugh, as well as go to work, worry about money, look after the kids, cook and do housework.

Cherrysoup · 18/01/2024 17:49

Think you’re being a bit miserable, tbh. I used to be delighted to see snow because it likely meant school would be closed (teacher, not child!). I find the dogs’ reaction really cute, although I confess it is a big pita when the pavements are like a bloody ice rink.

I really don’t know what you expected. You post something horrible and expect nice, supportive replies? Your post was nasty. Don’t be surprised when you get nasty back.

MonsteraMama · 18/01/2024 17:53

My husband is Norwegian and leaps outside like an excited husky every time we get so much as a sniff of snow. He's renewed my love for it, even when it's 4am and I have a commute and would rather be doing anything other than scooping snow off my car.

There is so little joy in the world these days, why crap on something that is joyful for many?

LlynTegid · 18/01/2024 17:55

I don't like aspects of it. Especially the 10% of car drivers who cannot manage easily and unless life depends on it, should have accepted staying at home or used public transport, and equally those who drive without any adjustment or regard for different conditions.

Actually I object more to this than snow! Can't believe anyone is still using this misogynistic term.

StaunchMomma · 18/01/2024 18:17

It's all a bit Snow Grinch, really.

People just don't like hearing general moaning like that, especially about something they enjoy.

I know this because I am the Summer Grinch. I fucking HATE summer time, but then I know I'm in the minority so I STFU and fume silently 😁

Rycbar · 18/01/2024 18:46

Im a teacher so I obviously love snow! (it’s sad that I don’t think - yay a day off, I think yay a whole day I can get work done uninterrupted!!)

Allfur · 18/01/2024 18:52

You told us a lot more about yourself than your dislike of snow. You also made clear your contempt for people who do like snow, because you don't.
