AIBU - to think adults who get giddy about snow should grow up?

It causes disruption and travel problems. Nothing exciting about that. People miss crucial medical appointments for example. Don't whatever you do have a heart attack in a snow covered landscape.

On the other hand it looks cute out of the window.

I began to hate it when I was about 18 and looking back it coincided with travelling further afield and being able to drive.

What do you think?

I really like snow, happily live somewhere with quite a bit usually.
It's annoying when dirty and melting but when it first falls its beautiful.
I have winter tires, a 4x4 with heated seats/wheel so car is pretty well set up.
I have snow boots and warm clothing.
Having the right equipment really helps enjoy it OP.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 18/01/2024 14:08

For goodness sake let people like what they won't. You sound like a miserable sod

Didimum · 18/01/2024 14:08

You're not being unreasonable to dislike snow, but you are being unreasonable for having a problem with people who like it. Their opinion of snow cannot influence higher snowfall, so it's just nothing to do with you?

with how the world can be these days people should be allowed to take joy in things like this

Yes it causes distribution, but we are so used to everything being easily accessible and that's why it's annoying. A lot of non essential trips being taken in this kind of weather

Coconutter24 · 18/01/2024 14:33

Each to their own, something that gets you giddy (obviously not snow) other people might think you need to grow up. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. I don’t particularly like it unless I’m sat at home but when I have to get to work or drive anywhere I hate it!! If it makes people happy on a time when not everyone is let them be

Crikeyalmighty · 18/01/2024 14:36

Given the general shittiness in the world out there at the moment I say take happiness where you can find it- be that 35 degrees and a pool and a cocktail or minus 3 and snow and a hot chocolate!! As you can see from mumsnet some people would be happy with it raining and 12 degrees all year- it takes all sorts

coxesorangepippin · 18/01/2024 14:37

Totally disagree

Snow is amazing! Sledging, looks beautiful, peaceful, cross country skiing.... And then the ubiquitous MN stews and casseroles.....

I think you mean 'disruption'.

A lot of non essential trips being taken in this kind of weather

Rather depends on what you personally consider 'non-essential', though, doesn't it? The blanket solution to that, as we all know, was locking perfectly healthy people away in their homes (with the exception of 'key workers' of course, that was a whole other level of classist stupidity) for 'just a few more weeks' to ensure they couldn't go out anywhere so they then couldn't catch and spread a type of coronavirus. The craziness seemed to slow down when 'vaxports' were being considered.

A bit of snow? A bit of strong wind? A bit of heavy rain? A bad lightning storm? Any other type of inconvenience? I'm not leaving the house for that. It's a WFH (I hate commuting and socialising with my batshit colleagues) day! Brilliant! Crack out the Prosecco!

Coyoacan · 18/01/2024 15:45

To be on the safe side, we should all be miserable all the time. Like the way people who saw the bright side of lockdown were eaten alive for daring to enjoy something that caused others so many problems

WinkyTinky · 18/01/2024 15:52

@Coyoacan Ooo, I bloody loved lockdown, me. The relief!

Lizzieregina · 18/01/2024 15:56

I hate snow and would be happy if I never saw it again!

But I live somewhere where we get a lot of it.

edwinbear · 18/01/2024 15:59

Well, it can certainly be a bit impractical if you're trying to 'get stuff done' but it's still exciting! And DC love it and I love watching them enjoy it. But I can take pleasure from the small things in life.

Gymnopedie · 18/01/2024 15:59

Growing old is inevitable.
Growing up is optional.

Let it snow,
let it snow,
let it snow...

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/01/2024 16:02

Meh. Whatever helps people get through this pretty miserable time.

Personally, I worry about slipping so I just wear good treads 🤷‍♀️ it’s nice seeing people (and dogs) enjoying it.

Caerulea · 18/01/2024 16:04

I WISH I could get giddy about it! It's rocking horse teeth rare where I am despite us being under a weather warning.

ladymactíre · 18/01/2024 16:04

It's weather, I cannot change it, might as well enjoy it.
Yesterday evening, when it started snowing, I watched a boy running up and down the road with his dog. I was happy for their happiness. It was beautiful

mondaytosunday · 18/01/2024 16:08

I think you are perfectly fine to not like snow but I LOVE IT! I grew up in a snowy country and really miss it. Because it was normal it didn't disrupt things unless quite a lot fell over a short period of time (at least ten inches in a day say). Shovelling snow was a good money earner for kids then.
When we had a few inches in London December 2022 my 17 year old danced with glee - I'm so glad my kids feel the same as me.

thedementedelf · 18/01/2024 16:10

Jesus Christ how miserable are you.

Desecratedcoconut · 18/01/2024 16:11

There is no upper limit for miseries on MN.

soundsys · 18/01/2024 16:15

Cripes! There's so many horrible things happening in the world at the moment I'll take my joy wherever I can find if, thanks! I'm not sure I'm "giddy" but snow is exciting!

AlltheFs · 18/01/2024 16:18

I think you are a miserable bastard.

I love a snow day. Yes it is pain in the arse, but it’s also magical. I have absolutely no desire to grow up aged 45 and 3/4. Fuck that.

Jingleballs2 · 18/01/2024 16:19

I mean I was singing "do you wanna build a Snowman" this morning so..

Surroundedbyfools · 18/01/2024 16:22
