AIBU - to think adults who get giddy about snow should grow up?

It causes disruption and travel problems. Nothing exciting about that. People miss crucial medical appointments for example. Don't whatever you do have a heart attack in a snow covered landscape.

On the other hand it looks cute out of the window.

I began to hate it when I was about 18 and looking back it coincided with travelling further afield and being able to drive.

What do you think?

I love it in countries where they are capable of dealing with it. In the UK it causes problems because they’re just total amateurs and handling it. My car has winter tyres and 4WD and takes on snow like a boss. It’s the unprepared others which make it risky for me.

The right shoes and clothing and it’s lovely.

Actually, on the whole Scotland is pretty good at dealing with snow. I'm in a rural part of England now where small amounts of snow happen every year and my goodness do people lose their heads about it. The first sign of a flake and they can't possibly drive. The Highlands don't grind to a halt every year and they get plenty of snow, it's just not newsworthy. What people mean is 'England isn't capable of dealing with snow'.

Whazzabanger · 18/01/2024 22:51

Ssshhh. Bloody love snow!

Liking certain weathers is not 'childish'. People don't need to grow up just because they love certain things.
YABU.

I like rain - no I don't like people having their homes and livelihoods destroyed by floods.

I like hot weather - no I don't like dehydration, death and forest fires.

I like snow, no I don't like burst pipes, stranded starving old or disabled people.

I like high winds that power our town, no I don't like peoples roofs being ripped off, trees flattening cars and blocking roads.

You sound like such a boring person. Do you not enjoy life?

What makes you say that? It's a very big leap to arrive at isn't it when you don't know anything about me other than I don't like snow and I don't understand why adults get excited about it.

I'm sure there are things you don't like. Does that make you a boring person who doesn't like life? It would be very silly of anyone to suggest so.

All I know about you is that you think I'm boring, but am I going to criticise you and say that makes you judgemental? As if ...

@Gymnopedie of course I voiced, or wrote it, it's an anonymous Internet discussion forum.

That's beautiful. Along similar lines, but even at 53 I can still hear the sleigh bell's ring (Polar Express reference).

If you honestly don't understand why another person could get excited about something, then maybe you should consider the proposition that other people are different from you and are allowed to be different.

You sound nice, @TheAverageJoanne

DdraigGoch · 19/01/2024 01:59

We hardly had proper snowfalls when I was a kid. So when I went to Germany a couple of years back and it snowed unusually early, you're damned right that at the age of 28 I made a snowman. And I'm proud of it.

What would you rather have? Constant miserable rain?

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 19/01/2024 05:40

Well, however people feel about snow it doesn't affect whether it falls, or how much, so what is the problem? I'm 64 and I still get giddy about snow - not that I see much these days.

I would rather adults be giddy about snow than moan and whine about it.

I think you should grow up and let people enjoy snow if they wish.

I saw this quote on FB this morning and it made me think of this thread i read yesterday.
"If you choose not to find joy in the snow, you will have less joy in your life but still the same amount of snow."

No need to attack anyone on this thread - but hopefully this thread has demonstrated that we all find joy in different things - and there's nothing silly about an adult getting happy at the thought of snow (or any other kind of weather)

GettingStuffed · 19/01/2024 09:41

I live in south west England and we've only had one snow shower and that only lasted about 20 minutes . We go winters without any snow. DH & I holiday in eastern Europe in winter when we need a snow fix.

Whazzabanger · 19/01/2024 09:47

We rarely get it where we live, so it is exciting/fun as well as being a bit inconvenient.
I don’t particularly like sun, love a cold crisp day, don’t mind rain… everyone has their preferences and they aren’t childish!
my idea of hell is a really hot summer holiday in the sun, but I don’t judge other people for wanting to go to Turkey in the middle of summer to get a tan…

Whazzabanger · 19/01/2024 09:49

I never get the posters who ask AIBU? Then get really worked up when people disagree.
Don’t ask then! Particularly if it’s something as dumb as are people ‘childish’ for liking a type of weather!

There's nothing wrong with people disagreeing. There's a lot wrong with accusations of being a troll, a Karen, having a dead soul and being a total misery guts in every area of life. and reactions totally out of proportion to the original post.

Richard at work: "wheee it's going to snow! Can't wait I'm so excited!"
Me: "Rich, you're 52 this year haven't you grown out of it yet?"

He knows I can't stand it, but nobody dislikes anyone for their views or has the reaction I've seen from some people on here. But they're anonymous aren't they.

You did start a thread to say that anyone who disagrees with you about something as trivial as a type of weather "needs to grow up".

Did you not realise that by insulting anyone who disagrees with you that you might get some insulting replies?

TheAverageJoanne · 19/01/2024 10:29

@GintyMcGinty No, I didn't. I asked

That's not at all what you are saying I asked.

Well you've got your answer. You are being unreasonable. You were unreasonably unpleasant to "Richard at work" who sounds like a much nicer and better person to be around than you.

You clearly don't like hearing the truth even when you ask for it. That's very childish. It's you that needs to "grow up".

TheAverageJoanne · 19/01/2024 11:03

@SerenChocolateMuncher You don't know the context of my relationship with any work colleagues or whether one person you don't know is a "much nicer and better" person than another person you don't know. Also opinions aren't truths.

@SerenChocolateMuncher You don't know the context of my relationship with any work colleagues or whether one person you don't know is a "much nicer and better" person than another person you don't know. Also opinions aren't truths.

You have given an example of an exchange between you and "Richard at work", in which he has expressed joy and excitement at something you don't like, so you slapped him down with a spiteful put-down.

You have now come on Mumsnet to ask if you are unreasonable to think adults who get "giddy" about snow should "grow up".

You are right, I don't know the context of your work relationships or anything else about you, but based on those two things - both volunteered by you - I infer you are bitter, spiteful and very unreasonable.

MarIeyG · 19/01/2024 11:12

Of course it's just an opinion. Not a universal truth. I never claimed differently.

So what the snow enjoyers aren’t causing the snow, they’re not closing to make life hard for wheel chair users they’re just enjoying their lives.
