AIBU - to think adults who get giddy about snow should grow up?

It causes disruption and travel problems. Nothing exciting about that. People miss crucial medical appointments for example. Don't whatever you do have a heart attack in a snow covered landscape.

On the other hand it looks cute out of the window.

I began to hate it when I was about 18 and looking back it coincided with travelling further afield and being able to drive.

What do you think?

@MRSMTO I want both!! I like actual seasons not just moderately mild and pissing it down

BiddyPop · 18/01/2024 10:50

It's nature. Do you grumble if adults get giddy about hot weather and the problems that can cause?

It's weather. You can prepare for it - personally or as a society. You can have proper winter clothing and boots, winter or snow tyres for your car (or even chains if it's going to be that much snow). You can have extra things in your car in case of disruption - blanket, water, snacks, etc.

And the same at societal level - procedures to clear roads, proper clothing for workers in cold weather, hospitals set up to deal with increased slips and falls....

There are many, MANY countries which seen feet of snow and much lower temperatures than the UK every single winter - and they just get on with living life as normal.

For example, in Sweden it is mandatory to have snow tyres for winter for your car. In at least parts of Canada, the kids still go out in recess (break time) to play in the yard outdoors unless it is -20 Celsius or colder. -19 means gear up and out you go to run around and get fresh air and sunshine. In Brussels, not all but key footpaths (so one side of the road, for example) are ploughed and treated, just like the roads.

Snow can be a total PITA
BUT if you can’t change something then make the best of it.

WandaWonder · 18/01/2024 10:51

Why should anyone like or not like something who died and made you God?

Muststopeating · 18/01/2024 10:51

It's not like people getting giddy about it/wishing for it make it so... So YABVU.

Yes, there's a lot of negative impact (I'm currently completely snowed in in the middle of nowhere with 3 small children and no DH and have been all week) but if people can find joy in it then let them be!!! (I used to be one of them and hope to be again one day).

PinkArt · 18/01/2024 10:51

I hate hot sunny weather, but I don't think anyone who enjoys is is childish, just different to me.

Who hurt you OP? Let people have joy where they can find it.

This, really!

i just love snow and wish we had more in the winter

BananasInThreePieceSuits · 18/01/2024 10:52

I think you need more joy in your life rather than being so miserable. You could learn a lot from those adults.

BiddyPop · 18/01/2024 10:52

And driving in snow is different to regular driving - but so is driving in heavy rain or on flooded roads, or driving at night compared to daytime. You just learn the extra skills to improve your own skills or depend on others who have done it because you can't be bothered.

Smartiepants79 · 18/01/2024 10:53

I think you’re a miserable so and so.
Snow is beautiful and a fairly rare occurrence in many parts of this country.
You don’t have to enjoy it but luckily I am allowed my own opinions and have no need to ‘grow up’. Most of my life is serious and stressful. I can enjoy the odd snow day.

brainworms · 18/01/2024 10:54

Get over yourself.

It's fun.

OneTC · 18/01/2024 10:54

I really don't like snow intruding on my life, or cold weather, but other people liking it is fine.

SkulkHollow · 18/01/2024 10:55

It is a pain in the arse. The kids are off school, making trying to get some work done and keeping them from going mad is a pain.

The road out of our village has been shut each evening as it's an icy mess so had to miss meeting up with friends.

But.... have been out making snowmen, throwing snowballs and enjoying going for some very peaceful, pretty runs. You have to make the most of it and I still get a little thrill of excitement whenever I see it starting to snow.

BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop · 18/01/2024 10:57

So it's better to moan and huff and puff about the snow, is it?

Yes, the snow can be inconvenient, I don't particularly like driving in it and I'm missing being out and getting my 10k steps as it's too slippery. But I sill love the snow, it's very pretty and I like seeing the joy that children get from playing out in it. I still get that joy at seeing the first flakes of snow start to fall.

DottyPencil · 18/01/2024 10:57

How sad. Have a hug. I hope you feel lighter soon.

beachcitygirl · 18/01/2024 10:58

It brings me and my daughter joy. We are having a difficult time - a horrid bereavement and it's a cost free joy.

I don't like being hot in any way! Get very stressed and want to start thrashing! I also despise light nights! People who BBQ incessantly due to it being summer should be locked away 🤣🤣

RaininSummer · 18/01/2024 11:02

It's pretty for a while but it's bloody dangerous and inconvenient stuff so on balance I don't like it

Denimdenimdenim · 18/01/2024 11:03

As an adult I tend not to get 'giddy' very often now, which is actually quite sad.

I'm all for adults being 'giddy', whether it's for something like snow or a new air fryer.

Let people live, we only get to do it once.

2dogsandabudgie · 18/01/2024 11:04

I love snow and I think the excitement for some adults is that it transports you back to your childhood and that feeling of waking up and seeing that it has snowed and you don't have to go to school and can go and play in it. I still love walking in fresh snow where no one else has been. We all have an inner child in us don't we?

KarenNotAKaren · 18/01/2024 11:05

Should they grow up?

No, feck off
<throws a snowball at OP>

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/01/2024 11:08

Not surprising that some people love it, when it looks beautiful - and makes a huge change from dark, gloomy days.

I do love the look of it - when I don’t need to drive anywhere in it, or walk on fresh snow which has fallen on lethal, previously frozen slush. That is the main worry ATM of a friend who lives in Stockholm.

LunaandLily · 18/01/2024 11:09

ManateeFair · 18/01/2024 10:46

That's fine, but what's that got to do with anyone else enjoying it?

Don’t overthink it, I really don’t think it’s that deep.

Blondehairgonewild · 18/01/2024 11:12

Did a snowman hurt you OP? ⛄️
