I love soup and it's a staple in my home particularly in the winter. Today I made a thick root veg soup and we had it with crusty bread. It's just so quick and cheap to make and there are so many different options - thin, thick, meat, veg, spicy, creamy.............

Do you make/eat a lot of soup?
What are your favourites?

Our family staples are veg, minestrone, tomato, chicken and sweetcorn and leek and potato.

YANBU soups is for the soul.

QuitMoaning · 17/01/2024 21:16

I have to stop myself making spiced parsnip soup too much as I absolutely love it. My second favourite is Jerusalem artichoke.

not a fan of meat soups much.

DanceMoveGrooveAndShoutIt · 17/01/2024 21:16

Counterpoint: it's boring and I hate it

Grin

kidding ... sort of. Unless it's almost a stew I get bored of eating it halfway through. I have a few I make and a few bought ones I'll tolerate but is it as good as a sausage baguette? No.

DanceMoveGrooveAndShoutIt · 17/01/2024 21:17

Parsnip almost guarantees a good soup though, I'll give you that.

dudsville · 17/01/2024 21:22

I like soup but it always seems to me like I'm just slurping sauce. I rarely have bread with soup, but when i do then it feels like I'm having essentially really, really nice deconstructed pizza before the toppings get added. As a result i have soup at odd times, like when I fancy a comforting warm drink.

Daisymay2 · 17/01/2024 21:24

My absolute favourite is minestrone ( Delia's version) Also like Spiced carrot with lentils, beetroot and ginger, cauliflower and blue cheese, brocholi and blue cheese and recent new one, sweet potato with coconut milk.
I hate mushroom soup, and not keen on meaty soups.

Whattobakeiwonder · 17/01/2024 21:25

Every one in this house loves cock a leekie but we also have a thing called Friday Soup. This is everything left in the veg drawer with fresh garlic and ginger, plus a hefty amount of cayenne pepper 😂. Frugal and delicious!

sprigatito · 17/01/2024 21:25

I make industrial quantities of soup, as DH and I basically live on it when the adult dc aren't here. I batch cook and freeze it in portions... have 62 pots of soup in my freezer right now 😂

The ones I make on autopilot are:

Tarka dahl
Pea and ham
Chicken tom yum
Chicken and mushroom
Potato, chicken and leek
Mulligatawny
Sweet potato, squash, coconut and chilli
Tuscan bean
Broccoli and Stilton
Red Devil (tomato with 4 different types of fresh chilli and smoked paprika)
Scotch broth

I bloody love soup. We take big flasks of it when we go out as well.

Sleepyteach · 17/01/2024 21:27

I got one of the Lidl veg boxes before Christmas and made three different soups out of it! My DD is a soup monster and taste tested all three and gave me her verdict!

mushroom and garlic is my favourite, DD likes the Tesco nannas magic soup recipe (sweet potato, pepper and tomato) and DH liked my curried carrot and parsnip.

I’m not keen on chunky soup, I like a nice smooth creamy soup! And it has to be in a bowl, I cannot drink it from a cup!

Prawncow · 17/01/2024 21:27

You have ALL the soups Sprigatito

holycrabsticks · 17/01/2024 21:30

Ages ago I screenshotted this post on a soup thread as I wanted to try it, and it's so good!

I think I've made a huge batch atleast every other week since and always have some ready to go in the freezer. We have it with part bakes rolls and lurpak.

Thank you @samthebordercollie if you see this!

I think I may have a soup problem 😳

lesdeluges · 17/01/2024 21:32

I am a plain Jane WRT soup. Hate the idea of it, but love the result every time!

I just buy a pack of ready chopped veg mix in Aldi. I refuse to peel and chop for this. Add a sweet potato (OK I peel and chop this one huh), add herbs and spices and chilli powder (no chopping of chillies lol), garlic and onion - the lazy versions of course. Simmer and blend and top with sour cream or creme fraiche. Irish soda bread (I make my own), and real butter. I do like that, but have to hide anything more than a decent size bowl or I'd have the lot.

That's the only soup I make. But I'm good at that one.

DanceMoveGrooveAndShoutIt · 17/01/2024 21:33

Go on then, who makes their own stock to use in soup?

Elphame · 17/01/2024 21:34

I love home made soups and make them at least once a week.

Tonight's was kale and potato. I actually don't like kale but it's OK in soup

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 17/01/2024 21:34

Mushroom soup yum

jelly79 · 17/01/2024 21:37

Pea and ham
Chicken and veg
Roasted red pepper and tomato
Butternut squash
Leek and potato

I love but dont make..
Oxtail
Tom yam

TheFormidableMrsC · 17/01/2024 21:37

I like a "throw everything in" soup with a bunch of garlic and loads of chilli. Blended down. I'm going to make some tomorrow. I buy flat bottomed ziplock bags so I can freeze portions.

ConciseQueen · 17/01/2024 21:37

If anyone likes cold soup, Ottoleghi’s green gazpacho

BudgetFoodie · 17/01/2024 21:37

DanceMoveGrooveAndShoutIt · 17/01/2024 21:33

Go on then, who makes their own stock to use in soup?

Sometimes but not always!

I will boil up a chicken carcass if I have one. I often boil gammon and use the stock for pea and ham soup

Had a big bowl of homemade roasted tomato soup for dinner tonight.

Shit tonne of garlic and thyme in with the well seasoned roasted tomatoes, gently sweated soffitto, a sweet potato, two tins of (more) cherry tomatoes, loads of herbs and chicken bone broth as the liquor. Allow to cook for 40 minutes. It was delicious.

Love to make spinach soup too.

And ramen.

Soup is the best.

43ontherocksporfavor · 17/01/2024 21:38

I’ve been making a big pot every week since Christmas. Started with a turkey broth ( using the carcass) and then broccoli and pea/ spicy sweet potato and coconut/ veg and red lentil . I take it to work a few times a week and it’s so much more filling and warming than my usual salad of sorts.

Cherrysoup · 17/01/2024 21:38

I put tinned soup in a big mug, has to be really hot. Make spicy parsnip soup is a fab idea, the tinned one (Baxter’s) is bonkers expensive!

DanceMoveGrooveAndShoutIt · 17/01/2024 21:33

Yes I do. I use the chicken carcass. No waste in our house.
Tonight we had leek, potato and spinach soup.
