Worst customer service ever at Asda

I bought something to drink from Asda last week for me and my friends. We tried it and didn’t like it - some left in glasses.
I tried to return the (admittedly empty) bottle, not thinking to put the remaining liquid back in the bottle before trying to get a refund on the try me love me policy they claim to stand by.
I ended up speaking to a manager (after having to ask the service desk employee not to call me “my love” as I find it patronising and extremely rude. The manager listened to me and said that if I brought back what was left he would reconsider a refund. I did tell him that I realised I should have poured what was left back in the bottle but it smelled so foul, i couldn’t bear to smell it again.
I returned on Monday and the service desk employee opened the bottle to smell the drink and poured it back in after not finding I’d tampered with it and left a sticky mess all over the bottle.
She went to get a manager (different person from last week) who, before even listening to me, said that she stood by last week’s decision still stood. I asked her why she didn’t even listen to me and she couldn’t answer.
I have emailed Asda head office and I’m waiting to hear back from them.

Alot of people seem to be missing that asda's policy for own brand goods is that if you don't like it you can get a refund. Check their website.

Please read the ENTIRE post before posting your comments

It doesn't really make sense.

So the second time you went back you had retrieved the leftover drink and put it back in the bottle and then it was spilled?

What was the drink?

You should ask mn to delete 'service' in your title

As if you could get a refund on an empty bottle

😂😂😂Love that

Soubriquet · 17/01/2024 15:22

Was it really so expensive that you bothered to do this. Surely it was only a couple of quid?

A tenner maybe I can understand you complaining

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 17/01/2024 15:23

This seems madness. If you don't line it tough It's not faulty.

Anjea · 17/01/2024 15:23

What drink was it?

givemushypeasachance · 17/01/2024 15:23

Their terms and conditions say "Try Me, Love Me If you are not 100% happy with your purchase neither are we - that's why we'll both replace & refund this item Simply return to one of our stores."

You have to actually only "try" it and "return" it though. If you've drunk the lot, as far as they know, you're just asking to both have your cake and eat it.

MissusKay · 17/01/2024 15:25

It'd probably would have been better if there was actual liquid in the bottle. If it's empty they are going to assume you liked it enough to finish it.

I've returned Waitrose products under a similar guarantee and they were returned almost full and have always got a refund. I don't think it would have been as successful if they were empty.

CuriousityKilledThePussy · 17/01/2024 15:26

While I understand them being reluctant in this case, I do agree their customer service is terrible. I got out of date meat with my online order, several days past the use by date, they were sent photos of the dates and wouldn't refund me even though they literally broke the law selling food past its use by date

SirenSays · 17/01/2024 15:27

Was it alcohol?

thatsjustthewayitisok · 17/01/2024 15:27

I don't think I'm following.

It smelled foul so you couldn't face pouring it back in the bottle but you could face leaving it in open glasses for several days?

tempnameforadvice · 17/01/2024 15:27

Huh?

Outthedoor24 · 17/01/2024 15:27

Was the drink faulty or just not to your taste?

It doesn't really make sense.

SpeedyDrama · 17/01/2024 15:28

SirenSays · 17/01/2024 15:27

Was it alcohol?

I’m suspecting is was a whole bottle of Smart Price Vodka at this point…

Some areas have bottling return schemes where you can get a voucher or a few pennies when you use a machine.

Maybe try that next time rather than an absolutely crackers attempt to return a bottle that you’d emptied and then apparently kept the contents of for a week sitting in glasses ready to be poured back in.

madness

Alloveragain3 · 17/01/2024 15:30

You try a new product, you're not a fan, you don't buy it again. Simples.

If they offered refunds on empty bottles they'd be out of business next week.

Pippa12 · 17/01/2024 15:33

I definitely understand the policy, if you don’t like it, return it. Common sense tells you that necking the lot and returning the empty bottle won’t get you very far!!!

That's how I'm reading it too. Absolute nonsense.

murasaki · 17/01/2024 15:33

Has the M&S 'steak cut chips poster re-emerged after the Christmas break? Marvellous.

Fionaville · 17/01/2024 15:33

It does sound like a lot of bother and more trouble than it's worth. I'm notorious for not taking things back when I should, so I'm the worst person to respond.
But given that, if I really was moved to return something and got refused then I'd be miffed too. Rightly or wrongly its down to staff/managers discretion sometimes and it sounds like you set yourself up for failure when you snapped at her for calling you love. The staff member has probably gone to the manager and said "I've got a right cow at the desk, wanting a refund for an empty bottle"
