To think that Freecycle has just got ridiculous...

Alderney · 18/03/2008 22:39

We have someone asking for a DS Lite...

Her DD's friend has just been round, and she played with hers, and now DD wants one for her birthday. But freecycler has already bought her a whole pile of Barbie stuff because that is what she wanted last week. So does anyone ahve a DS Lite for free that she can give to her daughter as well....because she wants one.

Anyone tell me what happened to "No" and "Its too expensive" and "You could try saving some pocket money and we'll see what we can do...". Now is just "Oh I'll ask on freecycle"..

it was suggested to me when i was after a TV,
try freecycle!
no offers though

Alderney · 18/03/2008 22:50

Actually I offered a TV last week and no-one wanted it...okay I was getting rid of it because it didn't work, but I'm sure anyone with a knoweldge or electronics would at least have wanted to ave a look to see if they could revive it..

FAQ · 18/03/2008 22:51

often get (working) TV's offered on our local freecycle.

SlartyBartFast · 18/03/2008 22:52

well a week later someone offered a TV on my site!
too late,
already forked out for a new one.

i dont know if there are that many people perhaps with time or inclination to fiddle with broken electricals.

BoysOnToast · 18/03/2008 22:53

whats the harm in asking?
dont ask, dont get.

Reamhar · 18/03/2008 22:56

No word of a lie, someone asked for a DSLite near us as well. There must be a rash of it big wants at the moment.

BearMama · 18/03/2008 22:59

Someone offered a Wii the other week - as you can imagine there were loads of replies - it turned out to be a scam tho. Very annoying. Mind you someone else offered series 2 of Lost on DVD, that was for real. He got 92 replies.

BoysOnToast · 18/03/2008 23:01

i repeat; whats the harm in asking??

WHY are there threads on here every week or so exclaiming at the cheek of people asking for things? theyre not mugging you fgs, theyre just mentioning a want in case anyone happens to have and not need something.

sheesh.

BoysOnToast · 18/03/2008 23:02

see, if i had anything good to give away, i couldnt be arsed to sift through 92 replies. sigh.

I find it amusing when reading through our local one at the things people want.

It only annoys me when you see the same names asking for big items week in week out and never posting an offered?!

expatinscotland · 18/03/2008 23:09

It's up to the mods to get rid of people who are just there asking for big ticket items over and over and not offereing anything.

BoysOnToast · 18/03/2008 23:09

but WHY???

WHATS WRONG WITH ASKING??

expatinscotland · 18/03/2008 23:11

Because the mission statement of Freecycle is taht it's a two-way street, Boys.

And people just asking and asking over and over again for big ticket items are taking up space.

skeletonbones · 18/03/2008 23:12

I think a DSLite is unlikely to be put on freecycle, but you never know, maybe someone has an even more spoilt child who got two in different colours and is giving one away
I don't see what is so unreasonable about washers/dryers/beds though people do give these away, for example if you move in with someone and have two of everything and the old applieneces are working but not posh enough to sell.

libEL · 18/03/2008 23:12

I can understand the list you put milliec, they are big essential items - barring the portable dvd player!

Today we had wanted fro an Apple Laptop, PS2/Xbox/Game Cube (so as not to narrow her chances apparently), M&P Pliko Buggy with Buggy Board, Little Tike 8in1 Climbing Frame!

They just seem so specific - if you are in need of something like a buggy then surely any buggy would do

BearMama · 18/03/2008 23:12

There's some amazing stuff given away on Freecycle in Edinburgh, I've seen everything on Milliec's list. I think people see that and figure other people might have it to give away.
You can add "Mobile Phones" and "laptops" to the list as well. Some of the posts you cant help thinking "Oh come on, you just want to sell it on and make a profit".

BoysOnToast · 18/03/2008 23:13

i thought the sole purpose was to keep stuff out of landfill.

its nice to be a two way street, but maybe some people dont have anything to give away. and if you wanted a dslite, had no money for one, and you knew other people happened to be v occasionally lucky to get one through freecycle, why wouldnt you at least ask?

never know unless you ask, no?

Beenleigh · 18/03/2008 23:14

It's a brilliant idea to aask ffs, what is there to lose?

expatinscotland · 18/03/2008 23:15

Like someone's really going to throw a brand new DS Lite into the rubbish, BoysonToast!

FWIW, I don't bother with Freecycle.

It all goes to charity shops.

It takes less time, and hte money goes to charity.

BoysOnToast · 18/03/2008 23:15

and even if they take the time to chase up items and know ways they can sell them on for a profit, theyre still keeping the items out of landfill... and making a bit of cash to feed their families too. whats wrong with that?

expatinscotland · 18/03/2008 23:16

Oh, god, not the For Sale boards argument again!

Sigh.

BoysOnToast · 18/03/2008 23:17

nowt stranger than folk! you never know! (agree its highly unlikely to get a dslite on FC lol)

and yes, i do charity shops too. cant be arsed with freecyle. too lazy.

libEL · 18/03/2008 23:18

Personally I'd be offended if something I offered was taken by someone purely to make a profit

I like to think someone NEEDS the item I no longer need

expatinscotland · 18/03/2008 23:18

I got too pissed off with people saying they were going to collect stuff and then they didn't show up.
