To think that Freecycle has just got ridiculous...

We have someone asking for a DS Lite...

Her DD's friend has just been round, and she played with hers, and now DD wants one for her birthday. But freecycler has already bought her a whole pile of Barbie stuff because that is what she wanted last week. So does anyone ahve a DS Lite for free that she can give to her daughter as well....because she wants one.

Anyone tell me what happened to "No" and "Its too expensive" and "You could try saving some pocket money and we'll see what we can do...". Now is just "Oh I'll ask on freecycle"..

milliec - I got my dishwasher on freecycle (did go and pick it up though) And a chest freezer and we have just given away a bed.

Your list is a good example of what I see on our freecycle groups most days.

sorry had to resurrect this thread, on the cheeky requests tip:

I am looking for a white or light wood coloured tripp trapp high chair
in good condition.

I'm tempted to write back and say, don't ask, you don't get, eh?

flipping heck. The killer bits for me: specifying the colour! and of course, good condition...

roar · 06/04/2008 12:41

and no please, or thank you , or NUFFINK.

Just. Give me a £140 high chair, in good condition, in a colour to go with my kitchen/dining room.

NOW.

wannamake · 06/04/2008 12:45

can i have a bike...?

misdee · 06/04/2008 12:46

well i am part clearing my loft and shed soon. i know i will be giving away a big pool with filter and cover, a bridesmaid dress, baby clothes, a pram and a few other bits. and once i get to the last part of my loft i have a metal bedframe, double, in good condition to get rid of.

misdee · 06/04/2008 12:48

wannamake, i asked for bikes for my dd's after xmas (seemed like a good time of year to get one) and got one for dd1. apparently its for 7years+, but i forgot how small dd1 is for her age, so its in my shed for when she grows, i think it will be ok when she hits her teens. i bought her a bike for her 8th birthday which is for 5-8year olds.

wannamake · 06/04/2008 12:50

Im a bit older than that

FrannyandZooey · 06/04/2008 12:55

I've given away a working fridge and 2 tvs on freecycle
I don't have a problem with people asking for stuff

wannamake · 06/04/2008 12:56

me too. goes to a good home.

TheFallenMadonna · 06/04/2008 12:58

Our mods say it's fine to ask for stuff, but specifying a model/colour is a bit much. And sob stories are not on.

I don'thave a problem with people asking for stuff. No-one has to actually give them anything.

Jambuttie · 06/04/2008 13:08

I love Freecycle but must admit get a good giggle and the things some people have the cheek to ask for

roar · 06/04/2008 13:11

i don't have a problem with people asking for stuff. it's the point of freecycle. Specifying an exact model/colour not on. to my mind.

Nothing wrong with asking for a highchair. A lot wrong with

I am looking for a white or light wood coloured tripp trapp high chair
in good condition.

misdee · 06/04/2008 13:12

my sister got a light coloured withj baby set tripptrapp in good condition from freecycle

Flame · 06/04/2008 13:13

We had someone offering THREE tripp trapps a while back.

I echo BoysOnToast with this one - no harm in asking.

W/r to the filtering out the people who ask but never offer - I hate that theory. I give loads of crap away on freecycle, but you wouldn't think it to read my posts. Why? Because I tend to read someone wanting something and think "Oooh, I have one of them they can have" and email them and offer it, rather than me actually sitting listing stuff.

Flame · 06/04/2008 13:14

Who cares if they only want a light one though - they are only narrowing their own options, not whacking you over the head and swiping your stuff

WombFor1More · 06/04/2008 13:15

It doesn't bother me that people ask for things that are genuinly needed for everyday ease ie, fridge/washing machine/buggy/highchair etc. There are a lot of those offered on my local ones but what I found really taking the micky is the amount of people lately requesting "modern pc's," laptops that work or flat screen t.v's

WendyWeber · 06/04/2008 13:48

How about:

Reasoning being, presumably, that if you were taking them to the tip you'd have to deliver them!

But "that would be a added bonus" - er, no, you mean that would be essential

3andnomore · 06/04/2008 14:05

I am not really bothered about the things people ask for...if they don't get it, they don't get it, if they are lucky enough to get it....good for them, I say!

And on my local freecycles there are always offers for bigger items, and personally we have been really very lucky, as we have gotten 4 Bed via Freecycle....and whilst I didn't put the beds on that we therefore didn't use, it was only because I had a friend who desperately could do with the furniture. ( I would have felt cheeky, if I had asked for bed on fc and then sold our own beds we didn't need anymore on....)!

I do not like it when people get things over fc and then sell them on, though...unless they were clear about that.
Had that happen recently with a Leapad....women was all, oh yes, my grandson will just love it...and then it was offered on E-bay a few weeks later....and she did this to lots of people....it was Freecycle that actually made me aware of it....and yes, I do know for a fact that it was the one I gave away, because it had a certain bag with it....some sort of Babybag, not a specific Leappad bag, and well, it would just have been to much of a coincidence...etc....! The way I see it, is that if I wanted an item flogged on E-bay, I would do that myself...

shit · 06/04/2008 14:07

good grief are we really having this thread (and its millions of identical twins) again....??

Freckle · 06/04/2008 14:16

Someone local posted a wanted message for a bike for her 5 yo. Now I'd been meaning to post an offered message for 3 bikes we have languishing in the garage because the boys have outgrown them. The only reason I hadn't posted was because I wanted to describe them accurately and hadn't managed to get my arse in gear to go out to the garage and get the relevant details.

So she turned up yesterday and one very happy little boy went home with, I have to say, a lovely bike which looked scarcely used (because it hadn't been much used to be honest).

If you don't ask, you don't get and people don't always think to post but are happy to pass on stuff. I do sometimes go "crikey" at some wanted messages but not crikey enough to want them banned or anything. I just hit the delete button.

shit · 06/04/2008 14:30

actually, having shat on this thread, i do have something to say [doh!]

yes, i agree with freckle and flame; i am MUCH more likely to respond to a wanted than actually shift my arse to list something.

so ask away! you either egt it or you dont, no-one getting hurt are they??

3andnomore · 06/04/2008 14:34

lol shit...

shit · 06/04/2008 15:15

[bats eyelashes]

snorkle · 06/04/2008 15:24

I think freecycle is great - I've offloaded stuff that isn't really good enough for charity shops (like games with bits missing, but described as such, and antiquated ski gear) that people have still wanted, as well as some quite nice things like a brand new digital camera (unwanted prize). Only once I got the feeling that the recipient was probably going to sell it on (and so what really), otherwise they've all seemed really pleased. I've received stuff that is junk to other people and certainly not available at charity shops (like pond plants from an overgrown pond and rubble) and also a wind-surfer that I can't wait to try out when the weather warms up. The wanted's don't bother me at all. Some may be a bit cheaky, but so what really?

roar · 06/04/2008 18:29

v funny that the people who 'exist' on mumsnet, never do a bit of mild eye rolling at cheeky freecycling requests, but don't seem to have a parallel RL existence... on here, it's all oh ask away, la la la... in RL - everyone I know has a giggle about it.
