To think that Freecycle has just got ridiculous...

We have someone asking for a DS Lite...

Her DD's friend has just been round, and she played with hers, and now DD wants one for her birthday. But freecycler has already bought her a whole pile of Barbie stuff because that is what she wanted last week. So does anyone ahve a DS Lite for free that she can give to her daughter as well....because she wants one.

Anyone tell me what happened to "No" and "Its too expensive" and "You could try saving some pocket money and we'll see what we can do...". Now is just "Oh I'll ask on freecycle"..

I think specifying make, model etc., is just glorified begging.

uttertripe · 06/04/2008 19:54

ach, its only asking. if you dont ask you dont get! you never know what someone might not want...

snorkle · 06/04/2008 20:11

roar, I'm not saying I don't giggle about it, just that people placing them doesn't bother me. I think our freecycle isn't as bad as some for outrageous Wanteds though from what people have said.

3andnomore · 08/04/2008 12:15

well, and I just can't believe that, on the day I didn't go online someone offered a 40" TV...and I missed that and it's gone, lol....sigh....such is life....

Oh, and shit, btw, it feels so wrong to address someone/anyone with the word "shit"....

elkiedee · 08/04/2008 22:09

I see the "wants" and some of the offers as entertaining and harmless. I have rules set up to filter them into separate folders and I just have a look to see if anything catches my eye and then delete.

I have sometimes needed to get rid of a TV (v basic colour portable, but in reasonable working order) and several working computers (but out of date ones even then) but I tend to offer to family first. With computers I'd prefer to know where they're going because I don't want someone to dig up stuff I haven't destroyed properly on the hard disk, though.

So when does the Freecycle Karma come round and you actually get something you reply to?

lilyloo · 13/04/2008 20:21

Just saw a wanted on ours for a 'wedding outfit for mother of the groom' specifying size and colour

MetalMummy · 14/04/2008 03:55

On my local freecycle we do have a lot of bigger items offered, from TVs, washers (loads of them), tumble dryers etc to stair lifts, vans and motorbikes. Last year seombody asked for a car because she'd just passed her driving test. She got a Toyota Yaris!! She posted a few weeks later that it only cost £200 to get it through it's MOT.

I have never seen a DS Lite on there, although last week there was an XBox 360 with games offered.

BrassicMonkey · 14/04/2008 04:20

Wow, I can't believe anyone would put an XBox 360 on Freecycle. I suppose, if they can't/don't want to pay for more games for it and can't be arsed to sell it then it makes sense.

No-one's stealing, so good luck to whoever gets something for nothing.

I'm getting sooo pissed off with freecycle, just want want want and a culture of greediness. I started freecyling when I lived in Ireland and the rule there was that you had to post one "offer" before you could post a "wanted". I think that should be the rule everywhere.

Having said that, when I moved back to the UK I posted asking for everything in one post, I explained my situation (had moved to the UK with just a car and DD, literally owned almost nothing any more other than baby equipment) and asked for any old furniture etc for my rented house. And I was given a sofa, a washing machine ( very very old and erratic but I was grateful), curtains and more. But I can justify this by a) being in genuine need, b) freecycling anything I didn't need again and c) the fact that I freecycled the ENTIRE contents of my house, washing machine, tv, dvd etc before I left Ireland.

I'm getting the feeling that more people than we know are selling stuff on too.....

The only time it bothers me is when people claim to be a charity, and they are not.

This happened to us, someone asked for wireless internet routers and cards to help a youth project he worked for and we had a spare set so I emailed him. He seemed a very nice chap when he came round.

He then reposted several times, and one of the moderatros checked him out and it was a con. I guess if you get enough you can make a tidy profit.

Mainly though I love freecycle, it is so useful. Where else would you get rid of a half a half pack of mosaic tiles? (I got 12 responses for that)

motheroftwoboys · 14/04/2008 10:20

We weren't even allowed to join our local freecycle and we have loads of stuff to "get rid of"!!

Tippychick · 14/04/2008 10:34

Why on earth MO2B?

BettySpaghetti · 14/04/2008 10:39

re: X box's (and other expensive gadgets/things) being offered on freecycle -there was a working laptop offered on ours recently and the ad requested that you ring a mobile no. It turns out it was a spoof where someone had posted the mobile no. of someone who had obviously p'ed them off so they would be inundated with calls

WendyWeber · 15/04/2008 00:39

Great one on mine today:

SparklyGothKat · 15/04/2008 00:43

wonder if the same person that asked

'does anyone have a internet ready Pc or Laptop for my friend whose son needs it for his homework' on our local freecycle

Tippychick · 15/04/2008 09:34

Another thing that bugs me is the adverts saying "I've just rehomed a dog/cat through Freecycle/local rescue, does anyone have a bed and bowls and lead?" Huh? Would you not get these things before bringing the poor creature home? Would you like me to come and walk it for you too?

My local site had someone asking for a wii before Christmas. Likely?

WendyWeber · 16/04/2008 09:45

Another completely mad one - a bit like getting the dog, then asking for the other stuff:

If you were building a bike, wouldn't you start with the metal tubing???
