To be embarrassed for these women following their OH’s round the golf course

188 replies

Flowersandchoc · 15/01/2024 17:41

I’m a member of a golf club and have noticed in the last year a couple of women have started to walk round the course with their OH’s.

I’ve seen them quite a few times now - they definitely aren’t playing, they just trail round after their husbands.

I could understand if OH had no one to play with or maybe in the summer when the weather was nice but there were 4 men playing in the group & it was bloody freezing yesterday so I can’t see the appeal of walking round for hours not playing. Is it me or is this extremely odd and a bit embarrassing that they don’t have anything better to do ?!?

I've replied a few time and I absolutely do not think it's embarrassing but I do wonder how many posters are actually walking around golf courses with their Husbands

I imagine it's a miniscule amount. I've said that I sometimes walk around the golf course with dh if it's a quiet time and he's playing alone, and only once in 20 years have I come across another non-player accompanying her dh, and she was carrying his clubs. Sod that.

@LauderSyme but it’s not the couple spending time together - there were 4 men and 2 women following yesterday. The men didn’t interact with the women at all, they were all too busy playing golf / talking to each other. So it just looked to me like the women weren’t letting the Oh’s have their own time for their hobby

How is that different to the typical "foursome" set up in, say, country walk, where the two blokes walk together and the two women walk together? You see that all the time in the countryside or canal tow paths. You also see it in pubs where the two blokes stand at the bar and the two women sit at a table!

It must blow the OP's brain, but I'm a better golfer than OH, but when I was in the later stages of pregnancy, I used to walk around the golf course with him, rather than staying home watching TV, because I actually enjoy the exercise (and giving him pointers re his game), but to onlookers I probably looked like the poor wife having to traipse behind the hubby!

LittleMissUnreasonable · 16/01/2024 12:21

I'd find it quite cringey too OP. It's the equivalent of someone inviting 'Nigel' along to a catch up with friends because 'everyone loves Nigel'. Chances are they don't, and would rather time with their friend without a tag along.
It's clingy and codependent. Why don't the wives go to the pub or for a walk? They clearly weren't learning to play as the husbands weren't interacting with them...

SwimmingWorrier · 16/01/2024 12:22

@user1497207191 I'd go with my Husband if he wanted to play and didn't have anyone to go with. I love walking and quite like him too. I think it would be odd if a group of four golfers all had their partners with them so there were eight walking around. Especially at the weekend when it was busy.

mrsclaus1984 · 16/01/2024 12:23

Why do you find this embarrassing? It’s not really any of your business?

PrawnLiberationFront · 16/01/2024 12:24

I think it says something about you that you see women with a group of men and immediately assume they are surplus/unwelcome/interfering. They're probably going for a nice walk, having a catch up with each other, then all having lunch or drinks in the club house after.

I do an outdoor hobby and my partner will sometimes come along to watch, get fresh air, chat to people, have a coffee with me after etc. But he's a man so he's allowed to be in public spaces.

SkulkHollow · 16/01/2024 12:27

Maybe they all just like each other's company and enjoy wandering round the golf course.

Crazy, I know.

Joonio · 16/01/2024 20:05

If you play golf you will know that this is not normal.Usually 4 is the maximum in a group and if the men are concentrating on their match the women are a distraction.Im surprised the captain hasn't challenged them.

I agree. Everyone is piling on saying that OP is being unreasonable but it really isn't the done thing to take people with you on a golf course. Golf coursees have a lot of etiquette like not speaking when someone is taking their shot. It's not really a day out for people who aren't playing.

You aren't supposed to just wander around a golf course.

bobomomo · 17/01/2024 09:28

@SwimmingWorrier

Why not? If it's public property or you are a member you are free to wander

It's not public property, it's the owners of the golf course.

Members are allowed to walk around the golf courses here any time they like, they are allowed to walk their dogs around it too as long as the dog is well behaved 🤷🏻‍♀️ different courses have different rules.

Are the wives members though? I'd have to ask my Husband actually but I do know it's not normal to take people with you who aren't playing especially when it's busy.

Think the pile-on is due to OP’s last sentence of their post and further posts.

If they would have kept it to Is it me or is this extremely odd and left out and a bit embarrassing that they don’t have anything better to do ?!?”, and not talked about watching them every week and what they heard around the clubhouse, it would have probably gotten different responses.

The title itself doesn’t really help either.

StopTheBusINeedAWeeWeeAWeeWeeBagOChips · 17/01/2024 09:43

They may be members, they may be signed in as guests, op doesn't know.

Maybe it's not normal for some courses, others it is, there's 5+ courses local to me, and most are pretty laid back, I've seen kids, dogs, people on crutches, partners etc tag along with golfers at various points in time.

Yes, I did say I didn't find it embarassing, I just think it would be frowned upon/not allowed at my Husband's golf club.

bobomomo · 17/01/2024 09:47

@MoreCandles

That's really mean if they don't let children under teens learn, both of mine had clubs by 4 years old and accompanied their dad, first on pitch and putt and by 6 they were playing on full size golf courses. Dd2 is pretty good to be honest.

Such a shame courses can't see that kids accompanying parents are the next generation of players

Abra1t · 17/01/2024 09:49

Perhaps the women want to get their steps in at the same time? Once or twice, I've walked the dog while my husband's played golf.

bobomomo · 17/01/2024 09:52

@StopTheBusINeedAWeeWeeAWeeWeeBagOChips

Same here. And as my local course is owned by the council it's public property

Yes, you're right some are (I've just asked). He did say it's not normal to take your partners though and nobody does it who he plays with. He does normally play at a weekend though when it's busy and usually in a competition.

So I'm going to keep my nose out now. Like I say I would walk around with him on a nice day if he didn't have anybody to play with but I wouldn't if he was playing with friends.

Each to their own though.

AwareDefender · 17/01/2024 10:28

These women should be embarrassed they married golfers let alone they follow them around like pets. Golf is an environmental catastrophe enjoyed by the rude and selfish.

Ah yes, the etiquette police.

Probably the main reason I gave up on golf.
