To be embarrassed for these women following their OH’s round the golf course

Flowersandchoc · 15/01/2024 17:41

I’m a member of a golf club and have noticed in the last year a couple of women have started to walk round the course with their OH’s.

I’ve seen them quite a few times now - they definitely aren’t playing, they just trail round after their husbands.

I could understand if OH had no one to play with or maybe in the summer when the weather was nice but there were 4 men playing in the group & it was bloody freezing yesterday so I can’t see the appeal of walking round for hours not playing. Is it me or is this extremely odd and a bit embarrassing that they don’t have anything better to do ?!?

I used to go with exh, he would be on his own playing I walked ddog (who couldn't be trusted off his lead because he would fetch golf balls!

LakeTiticaca · 15/01/2024 18:28

It's not something I would wish to do but assuming they weren't there under duress, what's the problem?

WeAreBorg · 15/01/2024 18:29

YANBU golf is boring and ruins a decent walk

RaininSummer · 15/01/2024 18:29

Unusual but maybe the two women are were having a lovely catch up with a walk and a lunch was planned after golf.

LaDerniereVacheFolle · 15/01/2024 18:30

My ex-boss and his cronies took up golf (crucially this often meant nights away or golf weekends in places like Portugal) as a cover up for them using sex workers and/or having time with their mistresses.

He told me it was an ideal hobby for this . He was a horrible man but maybe there's some truth to it hence the trailing wives.

Dweetfidilove · 15/01/2024 18:30

If they enjoy spending time together, and have to find creative ways to do so, so be it.

Good way for everyone to increase their step count too 🤷🏽‍♀️.

If it’s a cock-blocking exercise, then yes, it’s sad.

Yeah no one who golfs has ever heard that one before 🙄

They were probably visitors OP on a long weekend away or something.

Yeah. That will be what it was, blokes getting sex workers to tag along and clean their balls 🙄

FFS. This site is nuts sometimes

Bernieee · 15/01/2024 18:34

I think making a thread about it is more embarrassing tbf. Why do you care so much?

It improves it if you aren't a fan of twisting an ankle in mud, though - or if you have assorted joint issues, as the grounds are kept to make it possible to walk freely without injury. And for some, no dogs will be a bonus, as will no twats leaning out of vehicle windows to scream FAT BITCH/SLAAAAAAGGGG, throw drinks or following you to 'invite you to breakfast' (all of which I would encounter when walking/running alone).

Swiftsmith · 15/01/2024 18:36

Agree! What a strange thing to bother posting about

Agnes12 · 15/01/2024 18:38

I have done this occasionally when my husband has played a very scenic golf course. Bamburgh in Northumberland and Ile aux Cerfs in Mauritius are two memorable ones. Beautiful day in the sunshine looking at the views.

mum11970 · 15/01/2024 18:38

I’ve only ever seen this with young couples. Can’t say I’ve ever thought it was an overly strange thing to do. I often walk round the golf course with my husband on a Sunday but I hack away and swear at my own ball as well.

Kwam31 · 15/01/2024 18:39

I love to go golfing with my husband. We take all 3 kids. It's very relaxing to walk/ride the golf cart around the beautiful course and spend time together as a family.
Id find this suffocating, can he not enjoy his hobby without 'family time'

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 15/01/2024 18:40

So you're there judging them?
What on this green earth has it got to do with you?

I'd be of the same opinion, but golfers obviously see it differently, as they have every right to do!

However, there's no getting away from the fact that a very large part of golf is walking; so maybe the women thought they'd share the bit of the activity that they enjoyed - a nice walk and a chance to chat together, maybe before stopping off with their husbands at the pub afterwards - whilst not bothering with the actual golf bit that they may personally find boring.

Flowersandchoc · 15/01/2024 18:41

It’s not a one off, one of them joins nearly every week! And lives locally too. From what I’ve heard in the clubhouse, the DH isn’t overjoyed but goes along with it so he can play golf.

Anyway I can see I’m in the minority by thinking it’s odd and agree it’s none of my business anyway so I will keep my mouth shut 🤐

Lol why would you be embarrassed for them? They’re obviously not embarrassed, they probably don’t give a shit what you think.

My best friend was in a bad car crash when she was 23 and still has mobility issues. She often goes round the golf course with her dad as it’s a decent walk but not high impact and does her a lot of good. I imagine if you saw them together you’d probably think he was an older controlling man embarrassingly dragging his younger girlfriend around the course.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 15/01/2024 18:42

Maybe they see you as a threat and are protecting their DHs from running off with you!!

millymog11 · 15/01/2024 18:43

Not read the whole thread.
Who cares why the wives / girlfriends were there? If the husbands hate it that much they can deal with it with their partners and/or divorce them.
Maybe the golf course was attached to a club with other facilities (spa or sports or whatever) and the women just fancied being outside for a change?
Either way, if the men were like most men I know who like golf, i would not worry that they would fail to speak up to their other half if they hate them traipsing around with them.

This has to be one of the biggest cases of live-and-let-live I have heard of in a long time.

Flowersandchoc · 15/01/2024 18:43

@FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper Haha well I did think that 😜

I used to like helping my dad round the golf course before he died. He had Parkinson's so he needed a bit of help sometimes. I have very fond memories of some of our days out.

Gowlett · 15/01/2024 18:44

I’d be delighted if my DH fecked off to play golf.
I could do what I want in peace, no way I’d be joining in!

Herbiebanannas · 15/01/2024 18:19

My wife was guilty of “following “ me a few times last year.

She had just started lessons and wanted to learn the course and the rules of the game before being brave enough as a woman in her 40s who had never played, to go out with a group of more experienced women from the club.

She also went out and played just me and her a couple of times to build her confidence. Wandering onto a golf course at a club which is inhabited by people who have played for years when you are new to it can be quite intimidating.

Your post probably proves why 🙄

This.

therealcookiemonster · 15/01/2024 18:45

sorry OP but not sure why other people's actions should embarrass you?

especially as you don't know the circumstances?
