Breaking news; UK signing off on air strikes against Yemen. Is this just going to get worse ?

Since having kids this honestly petrifies me. This world is a mess! I feel like it's one thing since another ever since Covid nothing has felt the same at all! Life before that almost feels completely different and a blur ! Anyone else?

Do you think that doing nothing is cost-free? Quite a lot of what comes through Suez is pretty important, yes. For a start, if you are in any way dependant upon petrol or diesel (and almost all of us are, I don't own a car but food doesn't transport itself to the shops). It's not about plastic tat from China.

We also just went through this people demand wage increases and help to heat their homes

It’s all encompassing, someone said the 70s were a twin shock which is what this would be. The outcome is pretty far removed from a late Amazon order

I’m carrying on with life as normal. I’ve applied for urgent passports/ replacements for all of the family as a precaution.
first sign of trouble and we’ll be flying very far south to a country which never gets involved in this stuff. We’re professionally very attractive to the country we’d plan to settle in and I’ve moved twenty grand into an account that wouldn’t be affected by our banking systems failing, I’ve Increased available balances across all credit cards too , so we’d be fine for months even as ‘tourists’ paying hotel prices if we had to.
by knowing we’re able to flee and have access to money and flights I’m reassured.
Daughter wants to move out there anyway because she hates the British winter 🤣
So I’ve prepared for it all kicking off but also just living as normal and I work in probably the biggest terrorism/ military target zone in the U.K. too.

How is that normal

Trying to figure out where this could be-professionally attractive suggests a developed nation, I can't think of any who "don't get involved in this stuff" though

Yeah, the UK should kill people so you cam have cheaper petrol. Savage.

If someone is launching drones or even missiles against civilian ships then their deaths will be no tragedy.

@calimali You have it precisely right. Why are we getting involved at all?
There are some worryingly head-in-the sand attitudes on this thread. It’s as if nobody gives a second’s thought to history.

The headğin-the-sand posts are the ones who naively believe that doing nothing is a good idea.

Its not just the US & the UK- there are several taskforces in the area. A main function of the Navy (not just ours) is to work together to prevent piracy at sea, it's not acceptable to have civvy ships being attacked and major routes being made impassable by terrorists. Sure for us here it's in our interests from a trade point of view, but lots of other countries also depend on these shipping lanes; not just for 'tat' but for food, medicines, fuel etc. Its also if they're left to carry on and expand their foothold there are huge implications to that. Of course its complex and not that simple, but it's odd how many seem to think we should just fold and let pirates control strategically and logistically important channels for many countries because no one wants to 'deal with it'.

TheFairyCaravan · 12/01/2024 10:46

DS1 is in the army but I’m not bothered. I’m not watching the news, I learned my lesson when DS2 was nursing in A& during Covid and made myself ill by having the news on too much.

DS1 is already going away for 6mths this year. The only people who know where he’s going are me, DH, DDIL DS2 & DDIL. We can’t tell anyone else. I’ve got enough on without worrying about this.

Well, it just makes you sound so much nicer when you say that wars are bad. You get to rub your halo a little bit and pretend that everything would be better if you had a go at the reins. So much more satisfying than understanding that this regretful shit is the least worst option.

1dayatatime · 12/01/2024 10:51

From a military point of view it's fairly pointless basically using multi million dollar cruise missiles and jets just to re arrange some sand in Yemen. Equally using multi million dollar missiles to shoot down $25k drones does not make for an economically sustainable business case.

Personally I think it s been done more for the reason of "being seen to be doing something" rather than actually fixing a problem. Also I object to the use of US and UK taxpayers money to protect shipping that is going to other countries that are not covering the military costs. I would be happier if for example the US and UK protected shipping going to say just US and UK ports. If other western countries want to contribute to the protection of vessels going to their own ports fair enough, but why should the UK taxpayers have to pay to protect vessels going from say China to Ireland?

That said I do find the under educated tin foil hat conspiracy theory nut jobs on this thread hilarious as always.

Thinking that they have some special insights into the motives such as "it's all for the western weapons manufacturers" or "it's all grabbing Yemeni oil" (Yemen holds only 0.2% of world oil reserves) or "it's all about the US elections" etc. When challenged with facts their defence is that we are naive and that they have some special insight😀.

The classic was the economically challenged poster describing international trade of items such oil, LNG, raw materials etc as "shipping non essential tat" around the world.

I was in the RN for nearly 2 decades, only now I have children do I understand how stressful me being away was for my parents! Wishing him all the best, and you.

I absolutely agree that its important to preserve your MH, anyone should switch off if they're finding it affecting them. It won't change things to be sat at home stressing.

Cauliflowercheeseandsausages · 12/01/2024 10:53

@Goldenbear @ArseInTheCoOpWindow
it’s hardly much effort. I’ve filled in Some forms and moved some money about online. Took about an hour, cost me about a day and a half’s wages for the 5 passports . . I put more effort into dealing with life admin every week.
I’m the kind of person that makes a plan and then I worry less.
its no different than me keeping an extra freezer in the summer house incase the current one breaks down so we dont waste loads of food. Not everyone does it, it’s not abnormal though. I’m just that kind of person.

Where's plan b? Just being nosey, you can ignore it if you like.

Sushimad · 12/01/2024 10:55

I haven't watched or listened/ read any news for several years now and I find life is much less stressful. I only know about things if I come across something like this or if someone directly tells me something.I got fed up of the constant worry and I don't miss it.

Lex345 · 12/01/2024 10:57

@Cauliflowercheeseandsausages

Also being nosey-I am stumped as to which country this could possibly be very far south suggests southern hemisphere, being professionally attractive suggests a developed country-but I can't think of any that never-or would never-get involved in "this stuff". Maybe I have misunderstood.

Allequal · 12/01/2024 10:58

The idea that the UK and US are intervening to protect the economy is ridiculous. The houthis have been attacking Israeli arms vessels to prevent the Israelis from having access to ammunition that they are using purely to bomb kids in Gaza. And the UK and US are simply swooping in to help the Israeli war continue. The economy won't recover until this war stops!! They couldn't give a toss about the taxpayers! Our politicians have deals under the table that mean they personally benefit financially from this war. And for the idiots who call this conspiracy, how many times do these under the table deals have to be revealed in the news before you realise that this is an everyday affair with in the world of politics?

What is even more disturbing than this war is the amount of people who sleep peacefully in their beds without a care in the world that it's going on. Cause hey, we don't need to care about brown kids do we? Just ridiculous how disconnected people are from their fellow human beings.

MidgeFragnets · 12/01/2024 10:59

War has always been a racket. Given that economically the world is in the shit, it is only going to get more common. War makes money.

The best thing we can do is not fall for the shit churned out by the news. Given that the vast majority of people are opposed to what has happened in Gaza and Israel it seems it is very hard to give the average person an appetite for war. No amount of made up crap is going to persuade us. Make sure your kids learn to question things and oppose war as a solution to political (and economic) problems and hopefully it will be less likely in time.

Sorry, could you clarify, is it that everyone is appalled by the Israel Gaza conflict or nobody cares about brown kids?

Allequal · 12/01/2024 11:04

Are you talking about the same tin foil hat wearers that claimed that politicians were personally profiting from business deals on PPE during the pandemic and were proven to be true? Or the ones who said that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq so there must be another motive? Or the ones who accused our politicians of not following the rules they set during the pandemic?

Conspiracy is the word people use when they have no hard evidence to dispute accusations laid against political powers.

Don't be absurd. The number of containers passing through the Red Sea had dropped by 60%. This was one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, no more than a tiny fraction of the goods transported through the strait had anything to do with Israel.

Very true!

The houthis have been attacking Israeli arms vessels to prevent the Israelis from having access to ammunition that they are using purely to bomb kids in Gaza.

This however is absolutely not true. They have targeted some of our fleet for a start (who aren't just patrolling because of the conflict in Gaza by the way), and have been indiscriminately firing at civilian and allied vessels also. Good that you believe everything you read though with clearly limited/zero understanding of the area. Its interesting how some believe everything the side they align with says without question yet are quick to call anything else propaganda. As with most things invariably the truth is in the middle. Even if its their aim they can't be firing at civvies and causing global mayhem just in case they get 1 or 2 of their desired targets.

Agree with this statement. I've heard some utter bonkers shit in my time from conspiracy theorists, but saying that people who are accusing our leaders of corruption, being out for themselves and not caring about human life are conspiracy theorists is not correct, if everyday when the news is on the TV these theories are confirmed to be correct. It just makes the accuser look a bit stupid and naive really.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 12/01/2024 11:08

Allequal · 12/01/2024 11:09

I am blatantly saying that those on the thread that claim that the world has been peaceful until things kicked off in Ukraine don't care about brown kids and I stand by that, cause things have never ever stopped kicking off. Countries have been getting bombed left right and centre, and not just by western forces, heck the Saudis have been bombing Yemen for years. The idea that we have been living in a peaceful world until Russia Vs Ukraine just stinks of people not noticing people dying unless the people look like us!
