Breaking news; UK signing off on air strikes against Yemen. Is this just going to get worse ?

Since having kids this honestly petrifies me. This world is a mess! I feel like it's one thing since another ever since Covid nothing has felt the same at all! Life before that almost feels completely different and a blur ! Anyone else?

Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.” An increase in false messiahs, an increase in warfare, and increases in famines, plagues, and natural disasters—these are signs of the end times. In this passage, though, we are given a warning: we are not to be deceived, because these events are only the beginning of birth pains; the end is still to come.

All those conscription threads will kick off again soon

Yes I know that's the justification that has been given. But there have been numerous situations globally that 'threaten our economy' in which we haven't got involved... so why now? Why this one?

Because they don't think that they can fight back. They feel safe bombing Yemen.

They could have sanctioned Israel, refused to sell and gift Israel arms, refused to support ethnic cleansing and none of this would have happened in the first place. That's not as profitable though.

Unbloched · 12/01/2024 12:00

Does it not strike you as even slightly odd the speed with which the RAF are suddenly dropping bombs on the Yemen?

No, and you wouldn't either if you and any idea how the military operates. Plenty of info about readiness, how decisions are made & where we are currently deployed/have assets available publicly online should you genuinely wish to educate yourself. I'm guessing not though as you just wanted to use it to try and prove a political point.

piscofrisco · 12/01/2024 12:00

Yes. On top of the energy price shock we had last year, blamed on the war in Ukraine, where again, I don't recall us bombing the aggressors. And which if anything is nearer to home. So I ask again why the disparity in response?

And as a second question if your families lives had just been destroyed in Yemen would you be happy with it because the action protects British shipping?

It is as if 07/10 never happened.

😁 Well that escalated quickly.

I am getting more anxious about our safety.

I was at a screening and Q&A on Tuesday of the next chapters of Putin vs West documentary (to be added to the others on BBC iplayer at the end of the month) and while I was watching it, I was struck by how foolish it would be to provoke Putin as the UK would be an excellent target being an island to drop a large bomb or small nuke on as a warning to the rest of the World.

The BBC seem oblivious and seem to be in love with their marvellous series ridiculing Putin.

We hit 60 military targets with 100 missiles, all successfully. Manned by Houthi fighters who have actively been the aggressor.

Houthi spokesman has said 5 fighters have been killed and 6 injured. No mention of civililian casualties.

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/01/2024 12:04

@Charlize43 sorry - you think Putin is going to nuke the UK because we were involved in air strikes against terrorists in Yemen?

Generally if anyone nukes anyone else it's likely game over at this point anyway- I'd be glad to be wiped off the map first! There's provoking and then there's appeasing; do you think we should roll over and let him do as he pleases and hope that he ignores us in the future and leaves us be?

Ap24 · 12/01/2024 12:04

Honestly some of you sound crazy. You can't simplify this down to a single news story and then scream conspiracy theory or decide you would know how to handle the situation in a better way. There are so many moving parts involved and this hasn't just appeared from nowhere, it's been rumbling on for a long time.

As someone who has always had multiple family members in the military, there's always been something going on. I can't remember this time of peace that others talk about. I think the problem is the way the news coverage has changed since 9/11. Turn it off if it makes you feel bad. There's worse happening out there anyway.

inamarina · 12/01/2024 12:10

the80sweregreat · 12/01/2024 11:43

I'm guessing that the prices of everything will go up regardless and it'll be another thing for the current UK government to blame.
To add to
Ukraine
The pandemic
The NHS strikes
Feel free to add anything I've missed

Prices have gone up in other countries too in the last couple of years, not just in the UK.

Newchapterbeckons · 12/01/2024 12:12

I see a lot of disassociation on this thread op. You are right to be very concerned. The risk of this war spreading and getting out of control has increased, why would anyone feel indifferent to that? Unless they were unaware of the potential outcome?

The fear was always that this would blow up into WW3 as so many countries are involved. Yes I can see why you would feel worried - and turning off the TV won’t change the reality that this situation does pose a major risk to world stability and peace.

Tbf turning it on won’t either

"But conversely I don't remember us bombing Somalia or doing anything else when the Somali pirates were attacking shipping? What's the difference?"

+++

Do you have no recollection of the international task force of naval ships assembled to combat Somali pirates which has been in constant operation since 2009?

Yes the Ukraine war has had an effect on wheat prices.
The crisis affecting shipping in the Red Sea due to the Houthi attacks will affect a huge percentage of imports into Uk and EU. Shipping costs have tripled from some countries in the last few weeks. The cost of everything will go up if this continues.
These Houthi rebels are backed by Iran and are supporting Hamas.
This is different from the Somali pirates who were targeting boats for ransom money.

alltootired · 12/01/2024 12:16

Ukraine has been a major producer of wheat. It is unsurprising the war has affected wheat prices.

" But I don't see bombing Yemen preventing those things happening either"

On that we can definitely agree but it does make the US and UK Governments feel better about "having done something", ineffectual as it is.

Onelifeonly · 12/01/2024 12:20

It's the same as it ever was as far as I'm concerned. Yes it's upsetting but no, I'm not terrified. There's not a jot we can do about it, so might as well get on with our lives. I remember the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 and imagining all-out nuclear war was nigh. I wondered if it was worth bothering to revise for my exams. But height ho, here we all are.....

You don’t think the shipping interruption will stop?
