Drink wine in the bath that is? Watching a film and the main character just had a glass of red wine whilst having a bath.

I'm 50 and I think I gave it a go once maybe 20 years ago, decided that the combo of alcohol and a hot bath was terrible and have never done it since.

YANBU: of course no one does this other than in films, what a terrible idea

YABU: wine in the bath is one of the main joys in life, you're missing out you pleb

Yep, hot bath for deep relaxation, dimmed lights or candles and a glass of cold white wine. It’s expensive now with water meters and gas bills but it’s a treat. A shower is not the same somehow. But I don’t read in the bath, just try to de stress. I used to live in a village in the Himalayas which had hot springs and Temple Baths, total bliss.

OP here...first chance to come back to the thread properly, apologies.

Well this has been a proper education, not so much about the wine (although I am v surprised at the number of people that do this based on this thread given that I dont think any of my friends do), but that some of you drink tea and eat stuff in the bath, that hadn't even occurred to me. And the love for baths in general, I have one maybe once or twice a year if I'm in a nice hotel and even then I struggle to stay in for more than about 20 minutes, it's either too hot, too cold, too uncomfy or I get bored / remember something else I want to be doing. I'm glad you're all enjoying them though!

I’ve got a bath board with a slot for my wine glass… amazing little invention!

NotTerfNorCis · 13/01/2024 07:40

I do this for an evening bath. Wine and book. It's great!

Blueink · 13/01/2024 07:58

No - but like to relax with a hot drink when I get out.
Prefer to have a glass of wine with food.

PuppyMonkey · 13/01/2024 08:14

I’m in the “like the idea but in reality meh” camp.

My issue is, with a glass of wine, you have to be sitting up in order to consume the Wine. But imho, a bath only works if you’ve lowered yourself all the way under the warm water, otherwise the bits of your body out of the water feel unpleasantly cold.

Indeed, I’ve rarely lived in a house with the correct length of bath to allow for full submergence under the warm water, where you don’t have to bend the knees to fit in. One of my hideous student houses was blessed with an extra long bath and OMG I had the best baths ever in there.

But otherwise baths are a load of old balls.

@Cwtshcwtsh my kindle is waterproof 👍

Oooooh… googles waterproof kindle…

FrillyGoatFluff · 13/01/2024 08:35

I like a quick shower and then laying on the bed 'to dry' in my dressing gown with tea and a book.

Octomingo · 13/01/2024 11:36

If I have a bath, I have to have a shower before I get out, because I need to get all the bubbles and shit off my skin.

I'm another one who just feels like I could be happier elsewhere though. And all the preparation.

Shantayyoustaysashayaway · 13/01/2024 15:32

My dd1 loves a glass of wine while she's in the bath. A few xmas's ago I bought her a lovely bath shelf thing before they became all the range which had 4 tealights, room for a glass & a phone/tablet. I tried having a drink but I'm one of those people that likes a full bath with tons of bubbles & like to lie back & just chill. My DH has a coffee, vape & book with his & once he's washed will spend an hour in the bath reading. (He's 6ft 3 so has to sit in the bath rather than lay!)

Hear me out. Forget all about wine in the bath. Really cold bottle of beer in a hot shower. Absolutely amazing, especially after a long / hard day. I do it very rarely but it's bliss.

This has never occurred to me but come summer I’ll be doing it possibly with my pop up festival stool

Because we're all in the shower

As you see from this thread, we aren’t

VestPantsandSocks · 13/01/2024 16:02

Eating and drinking in the bathroom is gross......

TammyJones · 13/01/2024 16:25

Yes, bubbles, candles , wine - what's not to like?

excelledyourself · 13/01/2024 18:47

A roasting hot bath, candles, and gin often appeals to me in theory. But I find myself too hot and bored, and I'm usually back out in less than five minutes.

I might try again tonight though, with a Baileys, as I can't seem to heat up from being out earlier.

That you've got to get out and tidy up and get dressed at some point.

Now candles, book, wine, bed.... makes me do that leg kick and scrunch.

TheLogicalSong · 13/01/2024 18:58

I like wine and I like having a bath but I would rather keep these pleasures separate.

The hard surface you are sitting on. The cold bits outside the water.
Bubbles in the glass and Andre’s and a sofa are much more comfy.

TammyJones · 13/01/2024 16:25

Yes, bubbles, candles , wine - what's not to like?

The hassle of balancing a glass of wine and a non waterproof book on the side without one falling in. The water getting cold quickly and having to refill it. I'm tall so I cant lay flat, I have to scrunch up which isnt particularly comfortable in a hard bath, then it gets boring and either too hot/too cold and it gets steamy which makes it hard to read. Then you have to empty the bath and take everything out. Not much to like really lol

I'd far rather have a nice shower and then relax in PJs on or in the bed with candles and wine where I don't have to worry about dropping them and getting everything wet.

TeaToastIsAll · 13/01/2024 23:31

cardibach · 12/01/2024 18:45

The light isn’t the point. The point is the surface you are sitting on is hard, the water cools and anything out of the water gets cold. On a sofa under a fleece fully dressed this doesn’t happen. Neither does it happen in bed. Both are self evidently and objectively more comfy than a bath.

In your opinion. I think for me it depends on the bath in question. I find the one in my home a nice size and comfortable. The water doesn't go cold, as I like it very hot, so when I get out it is still nice and warm. I also find my bath so much more comfortable when I have aching muscles, than under a fleece, or in bed.

The only thing I drink in the bath is water or tea. I don't have anything else in with me. I sometimes stand an ipad up outside of the bath & put something on to watch, but before I get in. I don't drink wine, and books I ready dry.

Maybe2 · 13/01/2024 23:34

To be honest I’m not sure how people like reading, watching a film, eating or drinking anything etc in a bath. I can get in the bath and after 10 minutes I’m bored and just want to shower off and go about my day.

Maybe that's because you're not watching anything 😂

Well yeah… I find it uncomfortable and tedious, I want to move around more freely eg lie on my side, or be able to use my phone or tablet without worrying about dropping it! I don’t have a TV in the bathroom after all, and my living room/bedroom is a much better set up to watch anything!

FeetLikeFlippers · 14/01/2024 12:45

I don’t drink but even if I did, I don’t like the sound of this. I also don’t understand how a candlelit bath is meant to be relaxing. How are you supposed to relax when you’re surrounded by open flames that could set your hair on fire??!!!

I set my candles in the room eg window ledge, they are not on the bath and no-where near my hair.

Also use salts and oils, might do face or hair mask.

I don’t get how people’s books stay dry though? Even the steam from my bath messes up the pages.

I used to sometimes read magazines as wasn’t so bothered about them, but meant I couldn’t really pass those ones on (which I used to do to the doctor’s surgery, but stopped buy them).
