Just wondered how others would feel if their DH of nearly 30 years whom they’d raised three kids with decided in his late 50s to get both his upper arms completely tattooed? Pictures are a skull, a load of roses and a snake.

Also, two half sleeves is going to cost a significant amount of money, so he should discuss that expense with her.

PrawnLiberationFront · 10/01/2024 23:51

Assuming it's his own money and not from the family pot, he can spend it on what he likes

Thursa · 11/01/2024 00:01

I’d be surprised but as long as he wasn’t expecting me to go along for matching tattoos I wouldn’t be that bothered.

Well, it would depend. Are they well done or do they look like something from a toddlers drawing pad?

It's old fashioned to think that 'classy' is something to aspire to...or that tattoos are 'not nice' in 'classy' establishments. Thankfully society has mostly moved on from that school of thought.

Theres something wrong with being old-fashioned?

Tattoos are revolting and chav.

Nothing wrong with being old fashioned. There is something wrong with calling people "chavs" though.

VeganNugsNotDrugs · 11/01/2024 07:01

As long as they were not offensive and in a sensible place (e.g. coverable if required) then I wouldn't care.

If he got a swastika on his forehead, then I may have to reconsider.

If you aspire to being "classy" then spitting out low grade insults to strangers online (when you haven't even seen their tattoos) is hardly "classy" behaviour is it? 😂You are coming across as the antithesis of "classy" right now. You haven't expressed your opinion in an elegant or sophisticated manner at all- you're just throwing out insults

getsomehelp · 11/01/2024 08:03

I find them really ugly. I think its a fad, & most people will regret it years down the line.
I would probably not have married someone with loads of tattoos for a start.
If my H did it, particularly without talking it through, (although apparently if this is real, he has?) it would make me feel like he didn't give a shit about my feellings

Pottedpalm · 11/01/2024 08:17

5128gap · 10/01/2024 14:13

I don't know why people keep parroting 'his body his choice' like the OP doesn't know that an adult man can legally choose to have a tattoo without his wife's permission. I'd be surprised if there was anyone who thought otherwise. The question isn't 'does my husband have bodily autonomy?' It's would you be upset if he excercised said autonomy to do something you thought made him look awful/ridiculous/unattractive. Most people, if honest would be a bit upset I imagine.

Perfectly put.

A fad that's been around for thousands of years?

Change this to "I can't believe my wife of 55 has decided to get her hair cut short and died and her ears pierced. I just can't believe the ridiculousness of this? "

Is there a reason people over 50 are supposed to be so bloody boring and staid?

Yesididntdothat · 11/01/2024 08:43

Greasypole both those things can be changed back far more easily - the direct comparison is your wife getting full arm sleeves.

Beezknees · 10/01/2024 19:17

I find it very odd. "Looking" like you have a low income - is that something to be ashamed of? Many people on low incomes work very hard!

Ironically, people who make statements like this are outing themselves as the least "classy" and most judgemental.

For me it would be the lack of communication rather than getting the tattoo that would be the issue.
My husband and I had a long chat and last month he got a fantastic one on his upper arm. He's 67. The tattoo artist said you can be too young for a tattoo but never too old.
I completely understand folk not liking them, but when they spout judgemental shite about council estates and low earnings I just smile, it's terribly old fashioned these days.

Nily4567 · 11/01/2024 09:30

Not always about you luv…..

Nily4567 · 11/01/2024 09:37

I’m sorry your responses come across as really narcissistic - the basis of a good relationship, in my experience/opinion, with others (partner, family, friends, society) is acceptance.

The judgemental responses on this thread are really depressing…thankfully they make me very pleased about my relationship. My partner just accepts me, deeply on every level and it is so refreshing after a long, judgemental, cold, unsupportive marriage. Thank you for making me appreciate that ☺️

I loathe tattoos and they make me cringe or even shudder. I’ve seen only one I thought felt tasteful and that was a very realistic one of a cat’s face (Guardian pics, I think). What I feel Is strange, apart from the aesthetics, is that the bearer is unable to have a clear view, excepting a mirror. It’s their close friends and family and colleagues who must view them day in and day out.
Unless one is a member of a small group who are vying for total body coverage etc, where there is a competitive element, what’s the point ? Why do these people want to strut around displaying cartoon style illustrations, generally of grotesque creatures and things, which fade and become even less attractive with age?

Do you wear make up? dye your hair ? wear clothes? ears pierced? wear glasses or contact lenses? have short hair, long hair? Tan or stay pale?

All of these are your own choice of how you wish to present to the world -and shockingly some people choose different things

As long as he wasn’t having Hate across his forehead then ok

A vague friend got ACAB (ie All Cops Are Bastards) on his forehead AND fingers of both hands. Now that I would not be able to cope with.

So chin up OP it could be a lot worse 😅

A fair point, but their popularity in the UK has increased massively in my 61 years alive - in the old days you generally only saw ex-sailors with tats.
It has become massively fashionable in the UK over a relatively short period so the fashion may change away - artex ceilings and coloured bathroom suites were popular once, and I'm old enough to remember people getting rid of their "boring" white bathroom suites......that's all.

I would think my DH had lost the plot”

Yes, this.

1stTimeMama · 11/01/2024 11:31

I like tattoos, so I'd be supportive as long as he had both great designs and a fantastic artist lined up. I say this as a wife, with 5 children (not sure why this is relevant?!), currently laying on the bed having a tattoo, with a jealous husband at home wishing it was him.

No. You're just up your own arse and think you're something you're not.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 11/01/2024 16:10

We both hate tattoos so I would be massively surprised if he did this! However, if he did there wouldn't be much I could do about it - even if I despised them it's entirely up to him.
