Personalised number plates

Why do people spend so much money on these?

AIBU to think that the only possible reason for having a PNP is to be a bit braggy?

My DP wants to get me one for my upcoming birthday, I have said it is a waste of money and to not bother. DP doesn't understand.

Your thoughts?

@Cleanbedsheets

Can you elaborate on what you think is 'braggy' about having a personalised plate?

I have one but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be bragging about with it?

Personally, I don't think they're 'braggy', just 'twatty'.

Alternat · 10/01/2024 13:50

I can’t think of anything more naff than a personalised number plate. But people can spend their money on what they want - it’s their choice, not mine. (I will judge them for it though!)

Ok, why don't you elaborate?

Allywill · 10/01/2024 13:51

my daughter got one for a birthday - spent just under £600 on it - she has just been offered £3000 for it from a website. they can be a good investment. she’s never had it on a car herself though.

I feel the same about people who spout this nonsense. 😂

stoptryingtomakefetchhappen · 10/01/2024 13:52

I’m not a fan as I don’t see what the point in them is other than as a status symbol. That said, some people love personalising things - including cars. I find that a bit naff but that’s just my preference.
It doesn’t sound like you are particularly into it though so I would tell DP what you DO want for your birthday asap before he goes out and gets you one as a surprise…

Sauvblanctime · 10/01/2024 13:55

I’ve had a few. I like that they’re personal to me. Idk what anyone else thinks about it cos it’s mine 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well I don't think they're 'braggy' or 'twatty', I think they're wanky.

But that's probably because I live next door to a family with 3 cars - a mum, dad and their son - who all have personalised plates and I can confirm they are a bunch of utter wankers.

Because it's like you're shouting "Hey, everyone, look at me! I'm special!". Er, no, actually, you're not.

I really think that is a you problem.

My plate is on my car for me, not you.

Teasmaidavale · 10/01/2024 14:05

My mum passed a few years ago and I got a Pnp with her initials… it makes me smile and think of her whenever I see it and it feels like she comes with me on my journeys (I know that sounds silly). So I think they can be a really lovely thing. It doesn’t have to be your own name or initials.

CouCouCachou · 10/01/2024 14:05

I think they’re one of the absolute stupidest things you can spend money on.

What's the point of it being for you when you're the only one who can't see it?

As I said earlier, it's a vanity project but you will never admit that.

Metallicant · 10/01/2024 14:15

I don’t understand the appeal at all. Even if I had so much money I didn’t know what to do with it I wouldn’t buy one.

QuestionableMouse · 10/01/2024 14:25

My new (to me) car came with one.

I've often wondered why people get so het up about personalised number plates. Do you also whinge and scream "tacky!" when you see someone with a Chanel handbag?

Yes I do 😂Chanel handbags are on par with personalised number plates in my opinion. Of course people can spend their money on whatever they want but as far a I'm concerned it's very much a case of "more money than sense"

sondot · 10/01/2024 14:29

@PeggyPoggleshaw

What's the point of it being for you when you're the only one who can't see it?

I can't see the outside of my car when driving at all, you are right, but I chose the colour too.

As I said earlier, it's a vanity project but you will never admit that.

I'm the least vain person ever. Not sure what you mean about it being a project. It just exists and causes no one any harm. I'm not sure why you are so desperate to suggest I'm a flawed person becsue I don't like the same things as you. Again, that's a you problem.

Some people buy expensive handbags, some buy fancy tech kit above what they need, some people buy number plates - no difference really.

Having been a victim of number plate cloning that is the one thing which would make me consider a personal number plate, however it would need to be a very clearly personal number rather than the "three letters which happen to be initials" type if its going to deter a cloner.

But with an expensive handbag you can put stuff in it and hopefully the quality would be it’d last longer than a cheapo one. With the fancy tech kit you can listen to music on it or whatever it does and hopefully it’ll sound better than the cheap version. Whereas a personalised number-plate has no benefit over using any old combination of letters and numbers.

WinMore · 10/01/2024 14:35

Whatever people need to get a bit of fun out of life is my general attitude.

I have less than zero interest in owning one, doesn't mean I don't waste money on needless stuff that gives me a bit of a boost though. In my head my useless crap is more understated and superior to personalised numberplates though 😉.

vitahelp · 10/01/2024 14:35

Eurgh knew I shouldn’t have opened this thread! I’ve got one and according to this thread I’m twatty, wanky, a poser, braggy, have more money than sense…

I’ve had mine for 16 years. It was a birthday gift from my Mum. It’s the longest lasting gift I’ve ever received and I just like how it looks on my car. I’m not sure how else to explain!

VisionsOfSplendour · 10/01/2024 14:37

My thoughts?

It's personal choice but I'd be a bit concerned if my partner couldn't understand the basic concept that people like different things. Does he have general problems with comprehension?

Edited

I haven't said they cause anyone any harm, nor have I said you're flawed. I'm merely pointing out that having a personalised number plate makes you look like a twat. That is all. Peace.
