If you could only choose one, which would you choose a tumble or a dishwasher.

Tumble drier. Just bought myself a new one as mine broke last winter. I'm happy to hang outside for as long as possible but when it's raining and the washing/drying is piling up and you just have a clothes airer and a few radiators to hang stuff on its stressful.
Dishes can be done in the sink. I always wonder about dishwashers and rinsing all the plates first, surely you may aswel just wash them 🤷🏻‍♀️

No, because you only need to scrape any food off, they don’t need to be rinsed, but if you really want to, just rinse in cold water. It’s not really the same as washing dishes in hot water with detergent and a scrubber is it?

Tumble dryer every time

I'd make the kids wash up

Dishwasher. I’ve never had a tumble drier.

The only person who would choose a dishwasher is someone who has never had a proper tumble dryer.

coxesorangepippin · 08/01/2024 02:04

How on earth do your clothes dry so quickly
^^

Depends on the room. If it's a sunny, light facing room like a conservatory it could dry in that time

Tikei · 08/01/2024 02:05

Dishwasher, no question. But I love cooking and we're a fairly food-obsessed family, so there are always loads of pots to get through.

We've got a tumble drier, and I do use it, but I could live without it.

ConsuelaHammock · 08/01/2024 02:28

Tumble drier.Take turns to do dishes. Can’t take turns with the weather!

juicyfruitmtume · 08/01/2024 02:55

I'd definitely go for a dishwasher although ideally I'd have both!

However, if I didn't have room for both in the kitchen then I would be tempted to get a condenser dryer and try and find somewhere to hide it in a bedroom (maybe behind a dressing screen or in a cupboard)!

knitnerd90 · 08/01/2024 03:16

Depends on size of house I think.
When I lived in a flat with no balcony or garden and not much space indoors, I would have definitely taken a tumble dryer. With a house and children, a dishwasher every time. Whenever our dishwasher has been out of commission it winds up with me doing all the bloody dishes. That said it's a close competition! Am glad to have both now.

knitnerd90 · 08/01/2024 03:19

Also - modern dishwashers are more energy and water efficient than doing them by hand and you do not need to rinse the dishes.

(Have had both excellent dishwasher and full size, vented, American tumble dryer so can say I speak from experience with both! Yes the tumble dryer is lovely especially in a wet climate but I despise washing dishes, they are never-ending.)

Boomboomshakeshaketheroom · 08/01/2024 03:23

100% depends on how you cook, how many meals are eaten at home, and what your other clothes drying options are. I'd moved heaven and earth to figure out a way to have both!

SequoiaTree · 08/01/2024 03:23

Which do you prefer, hanging up clothes or washing up? I prefer hanging clothes so have chosen a dishwasher and no drier.

HAF1119 · 08/01/2024 03:28

I'm a tumble dryer advocate myself :) but I guess it depends solely on your preferences. We have a fairly small kitchen/diner combo and putting laundry on an airer just isn't that practical. Washing up I am just used to doing. If there was plenty of room for hanging washing/a spare room etc where it didn't look unsightly then I would go dishwasher as the washing up takes up more time than hanging up some washing to dry etc.

Einevinefine · 08/01/2024 03:47

Definitely tumble dryer.

Holly2285 · 08/01/2024 04:27

Definitely a dishwasher.

I have both and I only use the tumble dryer for towels and bedding.

Tangled123 · 08/01/2024 04:40

I pick dishwasher. I use it all year round but only use the tumble dryer consistently in winter.

GreatGateauxsby · 08/01/2024 05:20

I’d sacrifice a cupboard and shop more frequently so I could have both!

jeaux90 · 08/01/2024 06:55

I have both but if I had to chose I'd say dishwasher as it is more efficient energy wise than washing up.

But honestly I'd sacrifice space to have both. Any chance you can stack your washing machine under a tumble dryer? I had mine stacked years ago.

margotrose · 08/01/2024 07:00

Tumble dryer, but we've never owned a dishwasher.

arethereanyleftatall · 08/01/2024 07:20

@cariadlet
I don't know, I can't ask them and I've never thought about it before this thread. Didn't know 1 day drying was quick.
I have a large kitchen with a A LOT of glass (which are closed in winter) so maybe that's it.

Riverstep · 08/01/2024 07:21

Tumble drier. Washing machine is on every day so I’d never get all our clothes dry in winter without one.

Willmafrockfit · 08/01/2024 07:25

depends how else you would get washign dry
do you ahve an airing cupboard
do you have space to dry washing
i rarely used my tumble dryer so didnt replace it

CheesecakeandCrackers · 08/01/2024 07:29

Dishwasher for me, can't bear to be without one. I use our tumble drier max once a year, luckily it's outside in the shed so doesn't take up any space but what a waste of money it was! I think it depends on what you use though, I have a garden so dry most things outside and we have a woodburner so drying indoors never seems to take long, if you have a flat and no garden perhaps a drier is better for you although for the 5yrars that was me I also got rid of a drier to install a dishwasher!

Maireas · 08/01/2024 07:34

How on earth do you dry things in the garden when it's been bucketing rain for two weeks?
I couldn't do without either, to be honest. Both labour saving devices, but I do hate damp washing hanging around the place.

No. I've had both for years and would choose a dishwasher every time.

I don't dry any of my clothes in the tumble dryer - it's used for towels and bedding mainly.

The 2 key questions that most people are missing though are how much you cook/how many meals eaten in the house, and how many loads of washing are being done.
Most people do far too much washing (washing clothes that are worn once/don't need washing), and therefore have far too much drying.

DonnaBanana · 08/01/2024 08:39

YABU. A tumble dryer will smash all of your plates.
