If you could only choose one, which would you choose a tumble or a dishwasher.
context: single parent with x3 kids 11-7yrs

I never had either til 2 years ago - also have 3 kids.

For me I would get the dishwasher. I use it every day, sometime twice a day.

The drier is used several times a week over the colder months but not at all in the warm weather as I dry stuff outdoors. So it's only really used 4/5 months of the year.

Both are game changers, especially when you've got lots of kids, but if I had to chose, the dishwasher saves me more time and makes my life easier even day.

JackGrealishsCalves · 07/01/2024 22:25

Tumble dryer, takes me 10 minutes max to wash the dishes.
Drying clothes in winter is miserable, especially bedding and towels

fedupwithbeinghot · 07/01/2024 22:26

I have a dishwasher but no tumble drier. I live alone and use my dishwasher every day. I can cope without a tumble drier. If I had three kids, I might think differently

RM2013 · 07/01/2024 22:27

I’d like both. We currently have a tumble drier and no dishwasher purely because when we moved into our house there was space for 2 appliances in the kitchen so we used the space for the tumble drier (that had been in garage in old house and can’t go in garage of new house) and the washing machine - our dishwasher broke just before we moved houses. We don’t have a utility room.

however if we replace our kitchen at any point I would 100% get a dishwasher.

I’ve recently bought a heated airer and dehumidifier to see if I can reduce the amount we use the tumble drier as hate watching the smart meter when it’s on!!

PonyPatter44 · 07/01/2024 22:27

Personally, I would have to have the dishwasher. I don't have small children so our washing is a bit more controllable, but I HATE washing up.

I went without a tumble dryer for ages and just dried everything on a heated airer in the conservatory. It was fine. When we moved into a rental we didn't have a dishwasher for 18 months and it was crap. Now I have both and I am much happier!

PurpleBugz · 07/01/2024 22:27

Single mum to 3. I vote dishwasher. No contest for me I can't live without a dishwasher. But I do have a heated airer I also can't live without

ICouldEat · 07/01/2024 22:29

Dishwasher.

We have a TD, never use it, the dishwasher is on every day.

Kwasi · 07/01/2024 22:30

Tumble dryer. It's been two years now and has changed my life. I love that I can actually do a full load now because I don't have to worry about getting it all dry. Hell, I can do four loads in one day and not have to worry. It's also wonderful to not have clothes hanging all round the house.

Get the kids to do the dishes.

Maireas · 07/01/2024 22:31

Tumble dryer.
How on earth do people get sheets and towels dry? They are an absolute time saver.

tiggergoesbounce · 07/01/2024 22:34

Tumble drier every time.
We never used our dishwasher,

jannier · 07/01/2024 22:39

Tumble dryer and get a washing up rota

dontcrowdthemushrooms · 07/01/2024 22:43

I’ve recently moved and had a tumble dryer but no dishwasher, now I have a dishwasher but no tumble dryer. I miss the tumble dryer, but honestly the dishwasher has changed my life. I HATE washing up, could never keep on top of it, and it made the rest of the mess pile up - not anymore! I would like a washer/dryer, which is what I had before, but I’m renting so it’s not up to me. Definitely worth the trade though!

user1492757084 · 07/01/2024 22:43

Tumble driers are now more environmentally friendly though they do wear the clothes more than line drying.
Dishwashers are handy but you need to own more crockery etc. I don't use either very often.

The one I NEED to use more is the clothes drier.

When the weather is wet for days on end it is impossible to dry the family washing. On those occasions I use a commercial dryer, two at once to be honest, as they are flued, more efficient and larger and the cost is worth it.

CunkEverywhereOnEverything · 07/01/2024 22:46

Tumble dryer, definitely! Got one recently and it’s been a game changer, especially with the relentless rain so far this winter.

I haven’t lived in a house with a dishwasher for about 7 years and while it would be handy, I’m coping fine without one.

yikesanotherbooboo · 07/01/2024 22:47

Dishwasher ; I've never had a tumble dryer .

Clingfilm · 07/01/2024 22:47

Tumble!
I'm amazed at all these people who can dry family sized washing without.

A pair of jeans would take days to dry indoors with me with no mechanical input!
I've got a dehumidifier (for the damp, ironically) but that takes soooo much longer than the tumble.

As a PP said, it's rained since July where we are so the line's sadly redundant.

StillWantingADog · 07/01/2024 22:47

Dishwasher
we use ours every day
i use the tumble dryer 15-20
times a year and could manage without
(I do have a heated airer though)

cariadlet · 07/01/2024 22:51

arethereanyleftatall · 07/01/2024 21:49

Right. I've read all the responses. I don't get it. I don't have a tumble drier, or a dehumidifier, or a heater rack, or mould. Or anything else that anyone has mentioned. I don't have the heating on much.

The washing machine washes. I hang clothes out on a rack thing (made of plastic) in the kitchen. Takes maybe 3-5mins. The next day they're dry and I fold them. Fold up the rack thing and put it back in the cupboard.

How on earth do your clothes dry so quickly?

I don't have a tumble drier or dishwasher and don't feel the need for either but would like a house where clothes that are hung on an airer are dry the next day.

Mine take several days, especially in the winter - it can take a week for bath towels to get completely dry!

JamNittyGritty · 07/01/2024 22:56

I got a tumble drier - happy to wash dishes by hand but hate wet towels / sheets draped around my small house taking ages to dry. Generally only tumble dry those though, clothes on a rack next to the radiator to save electricity.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 07/01/2024 23:11

Tumble fryer first!

nocoolnamesleft · 07/01/2024 23:28

Definitely the tumble dryer. I've only ever had a dishwasher in one flat, and barely used it. Use the tumble dryer all the time.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 07/01/2024 23:41

Thats a tough one I find both pretty essential but if I had to choose I’d prob keep the dishwasher.

Minewasthesame · 07/01/2024 23:43

Dishwasher, a heated airer or two or three will suffice with older children.

FluffActually · 07/01/2024 23:48

Dryer dryer dryer. Hate having damp laundry draped all over the place. OTOH dirty dishes can be corralled in the sink.

Banrion · 08/01/2024 00:07

Dishwasher. More important than any other appliance or even furniture!
