If you could only choose one, which would you choose a tumble or a dishwasher.
context: single parent with x3 kids 11-7yrs

Dryer every time. I have both and use both a lot. But I could manage without the dishwasher and still wash bigger things by hand anyway so it'd be ok without. I have 2 young children and feel like I'm always washing then with the weather being as awful as it has been recently I wouldn't know what to do. We have an airer for hanging some things inside if needed but I couldn't stand wet washing draped all over the house as much as I would.

Never had a dishwasher but wouldn't be without my tumble dryer

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 07/01/2024 21:07

Dishwasher. Although we have a tumble dryer, it’s broken. If my dishwasher broke, I’d buy a replacement, my dryer has been broken a year.

Floralnomad · 07/01/2024 21:07

Tumble dryer . I've got both but the tumble dryer would be replaced instantly if it broke whereas the dishwasher I may shop around for as I could live without it for a while .

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 07/01/2024 21:10

I would never give up my dishwasher. If I had to choose between getting a dishwasher or a drier I'd get the dishwasher every time. Ours is only put on once a day but all dirty dishes go straight into it so the kitchen never really looks dirty. Whereas I only ever use the drier occasionally.

BriocheForBreakfast · 07/01/2024 21:12

Our dishwasher is on every day but only use the tumble drier once a week so definitely would be a dishwasher for me.

Takacupokindnessyet · 07/01/2024 21:13

Tumble dryer. I hate having stuff drying around the house takes up too much room, washing dishes isn't that much of an effort and doesn't need much space.

UsingChangeofName · 07/01/2024 21:13

Of the 2 I'd choose a tumble dryer.

In truth, I'd choose both a tumble dryer and a dishwasher over an overn, if we're being truthful.

Glamorous24 · 07/01/2024 21:13

Dishwasher. Had to live without one for a few months a couple of years ago and it was awful.

Never had a tumble drier. We use airers with dehumidifier - it’s brilliant and gets things dry really quickly and everything still smells good.

I dry washing outside for about 5 months of the year (south east.)

pandosadick · 07/01/2024 21:16

Dishwasher

GreyDuck · 07/01/2024 21:17

Dishwasher. We spent £10k remodeling the whole house to make the kitchen big enough for a dishwasher. I replaced all our hand wash only items with dishwasher safe, and it's run daily.
We don't have space for a separate tumble dryer. I have a washer-dryer, but I hardly use the tumble because it's rubbish. I think I'd use a proper drier more often - perhaps weekly in winter.

rollerblind · 07/01/2024 21:17

Dishwasher. 100%

1daughterand3sons · 07/01/2024 21:18

I'd get a dryer. Drying clothes indoors is a pain in the ass.
Taking the clothes to dry at the launderette is expensive.

I wouldn't get a dishwasher everyone has hands and can use them to wash up.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 07/01/2024 21:18

I chose dishwasher.
I don't do washing up.hate it.

Norpeth · 07/01/2024 21:18

4 kids here and never had a tumble dryer. So dishwasher for me.

CynthiaRothrock · 07/01/2024 21:19

Tumble drier
Clothes take ages to dry. A pile of dishes half hour at the worst to wash n dry.

Soubriquet · 07/01/2024 21:19

Tumble drier

DragonFly98 · 07/01/2024 21:19

Both, put the dryer upstairs where they belong.

Coconutter24 · 07/01/2024 21:20

Dishwasher every time! I use it twice a day and definitely wouldn’t want to stand washing and drying all the pots

Alfiemoon1 · 07/01/2024 21:20

Tumble dryer mine broke Christmas Eve I lasted a week before I bought a new one hate having clothes drying everywhere in winter. I don’t use it in summer as peg the washing out
I have both and use the dishwasher daily but if I had to choose in winter it would be tumble dryer

Takacupokindnessyet · 07/01/2024 21:23

Also dishwashers reduce the lifespan of stuff so even with a dishwasher I do one or two lots of washing up of things that either can't be put in the dishwasher or say they can but it does wreck them.

Rollon2024 · 07/01/2024 21:25

Single mum here and I’d definitely choose a tumble drier over a dishwasher. I had the chance to get a dishwasher put in and I said no thanks. I’d rather wash by hand and have the extra cupboard space.

TheKeatingFive · 07/01/2024 21:29

But you don't need to stand and wait while clothes dry, you can get on with other things. It's not a direct comparison.

susiedaisy1912 · 07/01/2024 21:30

Tumble dryer

what stuff?
apart from maybe the wooden handles of a pan that we only use once a year (and possibly shouldn't go in really) everything is still in good form.
