5 year old said something triggering this evening

He’s currently obsessed with killing and death in general.

He said “Mummy, I wish I would die” then laughed it off. I was so triggered I felt like I was going to burst into tears there and then. I felt really shaken up too.
I almost shouted at him “Don’t say that!” He just laughed and continued playing.

I’m also a believer in manifestation and speaking things into existence, which is why I’m now in a panic.

You need to stop believing in manifestation. It will do your head in.

Exactly. And it’s utter nonsense. You can’t wish things into happening.

widowtwankywashroom · 07/01/2024 19:32

My son when he was 5 used to lie down on the floor waiting to die.
Used to put my feet up and have a brew

Memyselfandtheothers · 07/01/2024 19:33

I also think people have lost sight of what the term ‘trigger’ actually means. Not every thing that upsets someone is a trigger. Unless this did trigger a trauma response OP, you probably weren’t triggered.

alpenguin · 07/01/2024 19:34

Stop with the manifestation crap. If it was real I wouldn’t be disabled. I would have a great job, big house, good health, no worries and world peace.

I’m saying this with kindness but if you’re triggered by what your kid says at 5 then you’re in for a shock over the next 20+years. You need to get a bit of a backbone and a reality check and stop believing in woo crap.

GalileoHumpkins · 07/01/2024 19:34

This surely wins some kind of prize for utter nonsense of the day.

Soontobe60 · 07/01/2024 19:34

My grandchildren were, and still are, obsessed with Queen Elizabeth’s funeral. My DM died around the same time as did their paternal great-grandmother so they are very aware of it. They ask all sorts of questions about it. Because it’s beyond their comprehension.

Letsgocamping67 · 07/01/2024 19:35

Have a close look at what he is watching and what he is playing. Gaming etc

NightisdarkandfullofterrorsGOT · 07/01/2024 19:35

Could you ask him what he thinks would be interesting about being dead? He may say something like because he’d be a ghost and could fly…..

AyeRightYeAre · 07/01/2024 19:36

The 5 yr old isn't this the problem. This is. 👆

widowtwankywashroom · 07/01/2024 19:36

I remember my daughter trying to dig the dead hamster up after a week to see how much it had decayed!!!
I stopped her, she never forgave me

Hobnobswantshernameback · 07/01/2024 19:37

And stop abusing the term "triggering"

AyeRightYeAre · 07/01/2024 19:37

And if manifestation was true I'd be rich, slim and married to Thor.

Pripsen · 07/01/2024 19:37

What are we meant to use for the biscuit these days? This one? 🍪

Fam23 · 07/01/2024 19:38

My son kept saying similar and I’m certain nothing was meant by it. He also started school in September and has been spending time around older children in breakfast/ after school clubs which I don’t think helps. I’ve spoken to his teacher about it and they didn’t seem concerned.

Fam23 · 07/01/2024 19:38

@AyeRightYeAre 🤣🙌🏼

ThreeAcross · 07/01/2024 19:39

Speaking things into existence!

You should stop hanging round with five years olds if you believe that. Tomorrow when he says he's a golden retriever are going to believe he can speak that into existence?

EnjoyTheMushrooms · 07/01/2024 19:39

Mine is 4 and talks about dying every other day.

just today, while watching Frozen, she asked “where do you go when you’re dead?” (Just after the scene where Elsa and Anna’s parents died).

he probably meant it either a) to shock you and/or make you laugh - testing out his one liners and humour and see what makes his parents react or b) conceptually, to see what it is like, being dead, so he could understand. Eg no different to saying “mummy I wish I was a unicorn/superhero/could go on holiday”.

Either way, I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

widowtwankywashroom · 07/01/2024 19:40

My daughter wanted to be a monkey after watching monkeys world, she thought the climbing frame was fantastic, every night she'd pray to wake up a monkey!

SD1978 · 07/01/2024 19:20

If manifestation were possible I wouldn't be poor....... I'd look to yourself, your kid is going to say lots of weird shit over the years, if that 'triggers' you, I'd be looking at sorting out your own coping strategies pretty quick

This really, although I really agreed with an earlier poster who swore, and said don’t be so daft

saraclara · 07/01/2024 19:40

My DGD is four. She goes on about death all the time. She 'found out ' about it a few months ago, but (fortunately) had no experience to pin it on to enable her to understand it. So she's constantly asking questions and talking about it. Nothing about it scares her, so I can quite imagine her saying the same thing. It's entirely normal at this age.

And you really need to get some help regarding your'belief'. It's absolutely not normal or logical.

itsmyp4rty · 07/01/2024 19:41

Just say 'I'd be very sad if you died, I'd miss you so much!' and move on. It's the sort of silly childish thing that all children say because they have no comprehension.

You definitely can't think or talk things into existence. Anyone that tells you they can is either delusional or trying to sell you something - or both.

Duh · 07/01/2024 19:41

I suggest you manifest yourself to be less bonkers OP

JamSandle · 07/01/2024 19:42

He's only five. There's nothing sinister about it. And as others have said, you can't wish death in like that.

JamSandle · 07/01/2024 19:42

widowtwankywashroom · 07/01/2024 19:40

My daughter wanted to be a monkey after watching monkeys world, she thought the climbing frame was fantastic, every night she'd pray to wake up a monkey!

For my sister it was a lion. She used to crawl around roaring.

I agree with you there! It will cause the child anxiety.
