What's the deal with 'farting cars' and boy racers?

Just this really, everyone to their own I get that. But, what is so great about driving around in a car that backfires repeatedly? There was one just driven down the road near us and it's hilarious as it sounds like very loud farting.
The driver only needs over sized boots, a mad wig and huge nose to be in the circus.
I guess the noise is to draw attention but it just comes across as 'look at me I'm a twat'.

I don’t encounter that many people at 2am on the motorway

Yes but the person who lives a hundred metres from the motorway might encounter you, or rather your noise, as they wake in the middle of the night when the racers hit the motorway. That’s what I have here next to the m3. Obvs depends on how loud the car is, but that’s the flip side in reality.

If you don't want to be woken up by cars, don't buy a house next to a motorway. I used to live next to the main a road in this town. If you opened the window you'd hear it. I could hardly complain after I chosen to rent there. I'd have been laughed at.

Im perfectly aware that living near a motorway will likely mean hearing more cars. The thread is about modified cars that emit far more noise than normal, that’s a personal choice by the owner, done for no other reason than their own enjoyment, and yes, it does sometimes have an impact on others.

CookiesEatEmAllUp · 08/01/2024 07:16

If it wasn't these knobs it would be some other kind of hoodlum (bin rattlers, dodgy tradespeople, sports yellers, whatever). The reality is if you want peace the only option is moving to a better area where these kinds are priced out.

Neither of my loud cars are modified. It’s how they came from the factory.

@Changingplace but that's your opinion.
They're not stopping anybody from living their own life.
They are enjoying what makes them happy. A bit of noise whilst they drive past is hardly a problem, come on now.

It’s a problem when it wakes my sleeping toddler, who then can’t get back to sleep and spends the next hour and a half crying. I live in the dip between two steep hills and people will absolutely gun it down one hill so they don’t have to accelerate too much to get up the other, so this happens with distressing regularity.

Wrong . These knobs travel through nice areas .

The only possible option is that there is much tougher emphasis on eradicating this anti social behaviour .

NewYearNewPyjamas · 08/01/2024 15:45

What the fuck! Such snobbery. Priced out? The factory cars that make this sound are not cheap and those old modified cars may be the way someone chooses to spend their money, of which they have vast amounts.

They can drive through the nice areas and live in them. Listen to yourselves!

And stop saying they have small penises. It's ok to have a small penis and we don't need to be saying it as an insult and then have to talk everyone down when they don't measure up. For the record, I don't have a penis of any size but I can come up with more original insults.

I'm quite happy to call them "noisy morons" or similar, regardless of social class.

Of course it is snobbery . No-one with class would drive one of these shitty banging 15yrs old corsas or fiestas . Embarrassing.

namelessnameface · 08/01/2024 18:22

@AngeloMysterioso a problem for you then. That no doubt you share with others.
That makes it subjective to the person. As I also have a young child, and they do not get woken up by this despite living on a main road and sleeping front of house.

So, because it isn’t a problem for you, it just doesn’t matter?

Lonelycrab · 08/01/2024 18:39

I’ll stick with twats myself Grin

So, because it isn’t a problem for you, it just doesn’t matter?

This is the essence of antisocial behaviour: I will do what I like and I don’t actually care about the impact on others because (some sort of justification)

But ragging around in a loud car, no matter how much you enjoy it is antisocial.

FWIW I don’t think the Op is really talking about newer, non modified but still high powered cars, it’s more your corsa/fiesta/old pile of crap car with a shouty exhaust. They’re the ones that really make a racket. I’d like to think if you’re that much into this stuff that you spend lots of money on new cars, the owners aren’t going to drive like twats. I’d hope not anyway.

DdraigGoch · 08/01/2024 18:43

@Lonelycrab still milder than the word I originally had in mind.

OneMoreTime23 · 08/01/2024 19:36

This one has no penis and earns six figures!

namelessnameface · 08/01/2024 20:34

@AngeloMysterioso yes, it does not matter to me. It may to you, but it doesn't to me. Which is why I have the opinion that I do

Britpop123 · 08/01/2024 20:39

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 06/01/2024 18:50

@Nonplusultra yes its deliberate. I I’d ask Dh how it worked. My brain heard ‘blah blah blah’ I think it’s something to do with forcing unburnt fuel into the exhaust which then ignites beyond the cat and causes an explosive bang upon ignition. (Otherwise known as burning money and probably bad for the environment.)

Edited

Yeah this. It’s something race cars do so some people try and emulate that race car sound in their own car

im no stranger to quick cars, and yep some are a bit noisier than normal but I’d much rather have the actual quick car than fake the sound like a lot of these people are doing

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 08/01/2024 20:46

@Britpop123 i like the throaty, bass rumble sound of a powerful car, over a high pitched whine of a race teak iyswim. As for the fart car exhausts… I can’t see the point, it’s a bit ‘oooo look at me’ and I bet something they don’t do when no one is around- like in the middle of nowhere.

Shade17 · 08/01/2024 20:54

I must say that’s why I love switchable exhausts, reasonably quiet so you can potter around built up areas without everyone thinking you’re a complete cunt then open the valves once you’re out in the countryside. Enter a village on a trailing throttle and close the valves again and there’s a bit of a burble but nothing too offensive.
