What's the deal with 'farting cars' and boy racers?

Just this really, everyone to their own I get that. But, what is so great about driving around in a car that backfires repeatedly? There was one just driven down the road near us and it's hilarious as it sounds like very loud farting.
The driver only needs over sized boots, a mad wig and huge nose to be in the circus.
I guess the noise is to draw attention but it just comes across as 'look at me I'm a twat'.

'Boy Racers' - I get that, the 'Farting Cars' - I do not get/understand. Happy to be corrected, due to my lack of understanding, but apparently getting your car to 'fart' is very bad for the engine.

And 'Boy Racers' take great care of their cars, just not so much for their lives or the lives of others.

For those that have yet to hear a 'Farting Car', it is a distinctly different sound to a 'backfiring' car.

Nice one OP, was wondering what to call them.

It’s harmless assuming they are driving safely and of course they grow out of it by 30 - a 50 year old boy racer isn’t a look is it.

WTF? I’m 46, female and not a drive goes by that someone doesn’t comment on how cool my car is.

I want to know what you've got now.

I expect she would get a lot of MN pearl clutching.

BTW I'm 47, and had to give up motorbikes so moved to cars instead. My son (23) also loves his cars but I'd rather he spent money on cars than drugs (and no, he doesn't spend it on both).

Being upset by a loud car is a choice. You can also choose not to let it bother you.

No wonder society has fallen apart . The most inconsiderate selfish people on this thread , unbelievable.

IfAIwasfedMN · 06/01/2024 23:13

Farty car several doors up from us moved in 2 years ago and leaves for work at 5:45am without fail, tearing up the empty street with his presumably teeny-tiny penis clenched firmly betwixt his fat thighs...

ntmdino · 06/01/2024 23:30

Crackle tunes drive me nuts, I have absolutely no idea why anybody would want one, much less pay for it. I mean...I'm a bit of a petrolhead, and I'm a total sucker for a nice growly/burbly exhaust, but all I can think when I hear those things is "That engine ain't running right".

Almost exclusively done by kids who have no idea what a car's supposed to sound like. Usually to a 1.0 Corsa, which is barely even a car and all they could afford the insurance on, so I guess it fits.

OneMoreTime23 · 06/01/2024 23:34

@Toooldtoworry unmodified Evo. Worth a fortune now as very rare and Evos no longer made. Jet black, leaves pretty much everything standing. 😈

They are hurting people. They wake people up, make pedestrians jump out of their skin, and generally irritate and upset those around them. If a young guy loves cars, then great. If he works hard, saves his money and buys a secondhand BMW, or whatever, then good luck to him. I hope he enjoys it. But there’s no need to tamper with the f-ing thing so it makes a screeching, exploding sound. My niece is neurodiverse and very sensitive to noise. A few months ago one of these morons accelerated past us as we were walking along and she put her hands over her ears and started crying. They often wake me up at night as well.

Noise should be taken far more seriously than it is. It ruins lives. I have known two people driven to suicide attempts by the noisy vermin who lived next door.

Noise pollution is certainly a serious issue. There are many health issues that result. It's estimated that in Western Europe there are 12,000 premature deaths per year that can be attributed to noise pollution:

If I were in charge I'd be putting laws in place about the noise that cars can make, as well as mandating low-noise tyres, speed limits, installing low-noise tarmac on faster roads, and removing through traffic from residential areas.

Noise pollution is a health hazard — and California is beginning to do something about it

From jangled nerves to lost sleep, the rising onslaught of noise in California is harming...

I'd quite like to not have my sleep interrupted, thanks. I value my health.

I've got less of an issue with something like an older evo or Impreza, they are rare and now almost of classic status and are iconic rally reps and homologation specials.

The ones I find utterly cringeworthy are the "performance" versions of modern mainstream cars mainly from Audi, BMW, Merc and VW with their entirely fake crackle and fart exhaust noises and which are almost exclusively driven by 40-something year olds.

Lucyccfc68 · 07/01/2024 05:58

We call them ‘Chav chariots’. Crappy old Corsa or Fiesta with a load of plastic stuck ton to make them look ‘sporty’ lowered suspension, sports seats and loud exhausts. I can’t get my head round why anyone would want to draw attention to themselves driving a 15 year old Corsa.

TheseLegsDefinitelyUsedToBeLonger · 07/01/2024 06:09

@RatatouillePie 50cc hairdryer on wheels… sorry but I’m totally borrowing that 😂

quisensoucie · 07/01/2024 07:04

@namelessnameface You clearly have no idea how noisy these cars can, nor how annoying this is when occuring on a main road every weekend night.
Yes, each to his own in relation to hobbies, but when they impact upon others, there isxa problem

AlwaysFreezing · 07/01/2024 07:10

I think if all of middle England got them (and specifically middle aged women like me) they'd be dead unfashionable. So I've asked for 'that banging car noise thingy' for my birthday. That'll show 'em.

My husband is slightly concerned I'm serious. But he knows that I really want a giant sack of grass seed for my birthday. I hope.

Joeslaol19 · 07/01/2024 07:41

One of our local geniuses was driving one of these classy vehicles last night. Driving like a lunatic in our village. I did mention to my son that I was relieved that none of my immediate family were out driving ,or walking in the vicinity!
It not just the noise (which terrifies my dog and probably young children ) but the speed . Unfortunately you cannot argue with stupid and one day these losers will accept that their noisy anti social shit tip will never replace a small appendage .
Just hope that an innocent person doesn’t get injured if an accident were to happen 🙏

HelpMeGetThrough · 07/01/2024 07:49

Matey boy across the road has a farting and popping car, it's a 21 year old heap of crap that he must have spent a fortune on making sound like that.

A car drove past the house yesterday morning that was noisy and I said to my OH, here comes another heap of shit. It was a very new Lamborghini, ooops!!!

MotherOfCatBoy · 07/01/2024 07:51

Thankfully in 30 years most cars will be EVs and there will be fewer and fewer of these and they will be harder to maintain as they fall apart. Time will catch up with them.

This I agree with. My exhaust has a lovely burble to it when warm. It is not too loud when started up, but there are some awful 'pop and bang' tunes which sound awful.

2024name · 07/01/2024 07:52

We have a lot of these 'farty' cars and heavily modified cars where I live. There are also three or four modified car meting places, a Japanese car meeting place (the art work is fantastic), a few race tracks (converted from old airfields) that hold drifting meets and modified car racing events (again some fantastic vehicles).

In my experience, most of the farty car drivers are very young and the popping and banging may soon lose its appeal. My son liked the things until he was about 20, now (at the grand old age of 22), he wants a 'sleeper' - an car that has a totally unassuming exterior but 'goes like stink!'

megletthesecond · 07/01/2024 07:55

I don't think it's anything to do with youth. We've always laughed at cars like this. I didn't think it was cool when I was a teen either.

Our town struggles with "car meets" and idiots tearing around the ringroad, I've had to call 101 at midnight as it's so loud. Although I think the police and council are finally starting to crack down on them after a rise in the pandemic.

NotmySundaybest · 07/01/2024 07:56

It'd be more interesting if they looked like Paul Walker or Vin Diesel but alas the majority of drivers I've seen look like moles who need a good wash

Weepingwillows12 · 07/01/2024 07:56

To me there is a difference between a powerful car with a noisy engine and some shitty car with the exhaust modified to be loud but a shit engine. I can understand people being in to cars (good cars) although it's not for me. Not a fan of the kids in shit cars with bad mods who meet up to race on streets at nights or do doughnuts in Tesco car park at 2am. There tends to be more antisocial behaviour with them. Some towns have real safety issues with the racing.

And I fully don't get the bodywork mods that do nothing to performance. Things like when they slant the wheels in at a stupid angle. Each to their own though.

Toooldtoworry · 07/01/2024 08:03

@Weepingwillows12 most late teens/early twenties that have these cars don't have the money to buy a 'nice' car so they modify what they can afford.

Where we are Police are cracking down on car meets but there is a place opened up nearby that puts on events much like The Ace Cafe.

The racing/drifting/etc is a separate issue, and I've never been to a car meet that has been like that, but that maybe because I'm older and choose different meets.
