What's the deal with 'farting cars' and boy racers?

Just this really, everyone to their own I get that. But, what is so great about driving around in a car that backfires repeatedly? There was one just driven down the road near us and it's hilarious as it sounds like very loud farting.
The driver only needs over sized boots, a mad wig and huge nose to be in the circus.
I guess the noise is to draw attention but it just comes across as 'look at me I'm a twat'.

It's quite funny sitting at traffic lights next to them. They're fizzing and popping and getting ready to move off then, when they do manage to get going in their pitiful heap, they can't even overtake you and have to thrash it to even get going 😂 then they tear up behind you and sit on your bumper until they can try to get past, all red faces and temper tantrums 😂

Yes! My car was chosen based mainly on practical needs, however it just so happens to have a very big engine with turbo boost (I prefer to spend more on a decent car which will hopefully last, than an old banger to make boy racer mods!). I have to admit to enjoying overtaking boy racers in their fartmobiles (definitely using that now OP!) and seeing their indignant little faces as they disappear into the distance. 😂

@namelessnameface i can understand why most hobbies can appeal to an individual without it appealing to me. But when someone comes along with something that no matter how you look at it has the appeal of “ I just really enjoy staring at empty jam jars” then it’s unsurprisingly questioned by others.

Goldypants · 06/01/2024 19:34

Yeah I get that — it’s a genuine enquiry. What is it is it the sound is it feeling that people are looking at you? Is it the feeling in your core, what is it?

namelessnameface · 06/01/2024 19:35

@McMuffins Ooooo nice, I feel like we can be friends now 🤞🏼

MahShinyShoes · 06/01/2024 19:38

I think ageism is an attractive part of it.

The owner of the farting car thinks they're sticking it to the 'middle aged and old people' and IRL it just makes everyone think 'annoying twat'.

I mean hobbies have been raised, and as hobbies go, comparable ones are:

  • Using a mobile phone in the cinema
  • using an iPad at full volume in a restaurant
  • chatting in the main entrance to a busy building.

Extreme edgy. Off the chart.

Nonomono · 06/01/2024 19:38

@namelessnameface

I think people should do whatever makes them happy, as long as you’re not hurting anyone.

But my biggest question is instead of spending lots of money on making a crap car sound loud, why not just use the money to buy a decent car?

Northsideoftheriver · 06/01/2024 19:38

The garage that fixed my car gave me one of their cars to use, one of the young mechanics it seemed. It was a while ago I think they had made a mistake so they were being nice. Anyway, it was a complete boy racer car. There was a spoiler, I felt very low off the ground and it made noises. I felt like such a twat driving home. It looked good don't get me wrong but some funny looks were to be had at traffic lights when people saw I wasn't a young lad and in fact quite a dull and boring looking older woman. I don't even know if this was allowed but I went with it.
I don't quite get wanting to sound like a bluebottle fly or chitty chitty bang bang on the road. Leave it in fast and furious movies I say.

They aren't hobbies, phones in cinemas , iPads in restaurants are just inconsiderate. It's a known thing you really don't do. But driving a car.. not really comparable in my opinion

JaneyGee · 06/01/2024 19:44

God they make me SO angry. I can't believe they're allowed to get away with it. Apparently, it's illegal to drive a car that makes more than a certain amount of noise. There's loads of the little idiots round here. They wake me up during the night, and make me jump out of my skin when I'm walking the dog. I can even hear them in the evenings when the TV is on and the windows are closed. The sound goes right through the house. The police, needless to say, do nothing.

There ought to be far stricter laws on noise pollution, especially on a small, overcrowded island like this.

hattie43 · 06/01/2024 19:55

These cars are a huge problem in my area aswell . I live in a quiet rural road but unfortunately it's a cut through to major access roads . These twats hammer their dreadful cars at all hours through the night . The idiot who said it's just a few seconds of noise is an example of how selfish people can be . People / babies woken up do not have a few seconds of noise , time spent falling asleep again can be a long time and nights of interrupted sleep is bad for health and wellbeing .
I just don't understand it either , these cars are all cheap and nasty and fit for the scrap heap , they are just embarrassing. No one ever said how great they are .

enchantedsquirrelwood · 06/01/2024 20:01

When you check an MOT you should be able to also see what garage granted it.

And then you'd know what garages were signing off illegal exhausts.

I find it hard to believe that these young lads are changing over the exhausts after the MOT and then before the next one, but perhaps they are.

namelessnameface · 06/01/2024 18:41

@PeggyPoggleshaw it's not the car owners responsibility to worry about other peoples animals though. It's not their fault that some dogs are scared of those noises.
Things make noise. Same goes for fireworks.

No, noise pollution is bad for peoples' health and it does matter.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 06/01/2024 20:05

It's also not just noise pollution, they drive incredibly dangerously. The police will come out, but they don't have the resources to deal with all of them.

Lonelycrab · 06/01/2024 20:08

Yes, they do. Have seen quite a few shitty beemers parked in a ditch round my way, police tape on them. Takes another week before they’re dragged out.

I blame fast and furious movies partly. If you like these, congratulations, you are a twat with no taste.

ThickButteredToast · 06/01/2024 20:32

@namelessnameface lol

mumda · 06/01/2024 20:33

We had a fifty year old Subaru owner who used to razz up and down the road. He used to regularly change it's stickers. When he moved it was so peaceful!

DdraigGoch · 06/01/2024 20:55

namelessnameface · 06/01/2024 19:16

Again, it's not the driver's responsibility to make others happy. If they are making themselves happy, with something they have purchased/built etc then surely that's all that matters.
again, a couple seconds of discomfort for those that do not enjoy or tolerate such noises is not causing a whole world of issues is it.

So if we owe nothing to our fellow citizens there's nothing stopping me from walking up and down the street with a boom box on my shoulder, blaring out god knows what just after the residents have started putting the kids to bed?

I'll stick to having some consideration for others.

Consideringachange2023 · 06/01/2024 20:57

It’s called being young (for the most part!), enjoying a flashy, fast car and generally being a big lad.

No different to any other foible of youth I guess.

It’s harmless assuming they are driving safely and of course they grow out of it by 30 - a 50 year old boy racer isn’t a look is it.

Unless they are driving a lambo, bit different to a suped up Fiesta

I am invested in this thread now, as I feel as if I am the only one who sees no issue here.
What makes you presume that he is "too stoked" to drive past 4PM..?

Because he smokes weed in the car. He's either stoked (you may used other terms to describe being under the influence of cannabis) or he has to go home for a wank because driving loudly is SO exciting and edgy.

carbon60 · 06/01/2024 22:15

Well back in the day we used to take the baffled out of our motorbike exhausts to make them louder. I think a lot of people here have forgotten what it's like to be young. That's what youth is for, having fun before you turn into an old fogey, which going by mumsnet seems to be when you hit 21.

OneMoreTime23 · 06/01/2024 22:18

I’ve driven a loud Japanese rally car for 20 years. Never had a penis. 🤷🏻‍♀️

shitty corsas, I agree with, but us racers aren’t all boys.

WTF? I’m 46, female and not a drive goes by that someone doesn’t comment on how cool my car is.

I don't know, I almost respect the honesty of owning up to selfish individualism... most people try to dress it up or explain it away, at least PP is up front in their "I'm all right guv, fuck the others" ethos.

Zapzep · 06/01/2024 22:37

I always wanted a fart blaster but never had the confidence for it.

I think people should do whatever makes them happy, as long as you’re not hurting anyone.

But my biggest question is instead of spending lots of money on making a crap car sound loud, why not just use the money to buy a decent car?

They are hurting people. They wake people up, make pedestrians jump out of their skin, and generally irritate and upset those around them. If a young guy loves cars, then great. If he works hard, saves his money and buys a secondhand BMW, or whatever, then good luck to him. I hope he enjoys it. But there’s no need to tamper with the f-ing thing so it makes a screeching, exploding sound. My niece is neurodiverse and very sensitive to noise. A few months ago one of these morons accelerated past us as we were walking along and she put her hands over her ears and started crying. They often wake me up at night as well.

Noise should be taken far more seriously than it is. It ruins lives. I have known two people driven to suicide attempts by the noisy vermin who lived next door.
