What's the deal with 'farting cars' and boy racers?

welcometothnuthouse · 06/01/2024 17:30

Just this really, everyone to their own I get that. But, what is so great about driving around in a car that backfires repeatedly? There was one just driven down the road near us and it's hilarious as it sounds like very loud farting.
The driver only needs over sized boots, a mad wig and huge nose to be in the circus.
I guess the noise is to draw attention but it just comes across as 'look at me I'm a twat'.

C63 at 50 grand, or any fancy Merc isn’t really boy racer territory though is it. Or maybe it is these days with rental purchases?

Technical question for those who
own expensive massive bhp cars with splutty turbos: is it possible to drive around without making a racket? Or is it just when you put your foot down?

Evo exhaust can be quietened with a baffle, but gets louder when the foot goes down with or without it.

My Cupra is moderately loud in comfort mode and loud in Cupra mode (it opens the exhaust flaps).

Both sound amazing in tunnels. :)

I genuinely like to know what the driver of the car gets from it being noisy

Similarly daft wee lassies 😍 who think they are cool 😎 if they get to ride along with them.

Emporium0 · 07/01/2024 20:47

@welcometothnuthouse basically street racing culture and the fast and furious films making it seem cool

DOPAMINE. (I have ADHD.)

Don't get me started on exhaust smells. 🤤

Lonelycrab · 07/01/2024 21:37

DOPAMINE

There are other methods of getting this that don’t involve the attention and disturbance of dozens of other people.

OneMoreTime23 · 07/01/2024 21:39

I don’t encounter that many people at 2am on the motorway. 🤔

Neighbour one side has a Porsche 911 and on the other a Harley Davidson. Not been any issues in 20 years of living here. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t smoke or drink, do drugs or eat meat. There is only cheese, gym and driving that give me the dopamine.

OneMoreTime23 · 07/01/2024 21:41

It’s actually the guy at the top if the street that drives like an idiot that’s likely to kill someone in his EV.

namelessnameface · 06/01/2024 19:04

Do you not think maybe it just makes them happy?

But I find noise so annoying, I would pay to have a quiet car so don't get way you want one that sounds like its eaten too many parsnips.

Because people don’t all like the same things?

Lonelycrab · 07/01/2024 21:50

Yes but the person who lives a hundred metres from the motorway might encounter you, or rather your noise, as they wake in the middle of the night when the racers hit the motorway. That’s what I have here next to the m3. Obvs depends on how loud the car is, but that’s the flip side in reality.

Lonelycrab · 07/01/2024 21:58

Yes, but a person sat on a bus or train with their music blaring out full volume on their phone could use the same argument. It’s pretty much the same thing I think.

OneMoreTime23 · 07/01/2024 21:58

I don’t have to pass many houses to get to the motorway. Closest neighbours have loud vehicles too. And there’s always triple glazing.

Lonelycrab · 07/01/2024 22:01

Ah I see. The motorways don’t pass built up areas at all and I need triple glazing because of your hobby. I get it.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 07/01/2024 22:02

Definitely an idiot tracker. Or an immature 'man'.

There’s the neighbour whose baby cried all night when everyone had their windows open at night. The dog that barks when he’s let out at 5am. The drummer who practices all weekend. The RAF fly A400s low here and they sound like an earthquake most days. Not to mention the various emergency simulations that take place with police helicopters. We’re 2 miles from a major hospital so the air ambulance is over the house multiple times a week.

My cars pale into the background amongst all that!

I’m sure there are things that would fuck me off if I lived near you too.

There probably aren’t, although my front hedge needs cutting…

Your front hedge isn't loud enough. Boring

You haven’t seen how badly it needs cutting Shock

@OneMoreTime23 Im only half serious.

Sarah2891 · 07/01/2024 22:15

Only an absolute bellend drives around in a car making that noise.
Like others have said, it just makes me think they are announcing what a tiny penis they have.

PeggyPoggleshaw · 07/01/2024 22:40

namelessnameface · 06/01/2024 18:41

@PeggyPoggleshaw it's not the car owners responsibility to worry about other peoples animals though. It's not their fault that some dogs are scared of those noises.
Things make noise. Same goes for fireworks.

That's true, and I also think the same about fireworks. But there's something called consideration for others. The fact that you fail to understand that says a lot about you.

OneMoreTime23 · 07/01/2024 22:41

One wonders how the people living close to Disneyland Paris (who have fireworks every night) cope.

namelessnameface · 07/01/2024 22:46

@PeggyPoggleshaw I don't fail to see that, and I don't personally drive a loud car, set off fireworks outside of occasions, lack general consideration for others. BUT having said that, these things do not bother me, and I think on a planet with 7+ billion people, you just need to put up with it and live really.

By complaining on Mumsnet it would seem. Or their local Facebook groups
