What's the deal with 'farting cars' and boy racers?

Just this really, everyone to their own I get that. But, what is so great about driving around in a car that backfires repeatedly? There was one just driven down the road near us and it's hilarious as it sounds like very loud farting.
The driver only needs over sized boots, a mad wig and huge nose to be in the circus.
I guess the noise is to draw attention but it just comes across as 'look at me I'm a twat'.

I think most youths today aren't really into cars that much and certainly not into "modding" them.

The "boy" racers in their embarrassing and obnoxiously loud cars brapping and farting along the road are mostly now blokes in their 40's and 50's, who 30 years ago were driving corsas and saxos with loud exhausts, now they're driving Audis and BMW's with loud exhausts.

Truly cringeworthy.

Newgirls · 06/01/2024 18:58

It’s willy waving for kids who’ve just passed their tests isn’t it? Look at meeee.

Goldypants · 06/01/2024 18:59

I genuinely like to know what the driver of the car gets from it being noisy

Im in north Hampshire, and disagree. Very strong car mod, loud exhaust racing culture here, they tend to come out pretty late at night but it’s like a racetrack if you sit and listen from your garden late on. Look at the meets you get (YouTube will show you) hundreds of cars and it’s a problem for the police sometimes. Its mostly modded and customised stuff.

Couldyounot · 06/01/2024 19:04

I followed someone in a modified Audi S3 for a few miles yesterday which probably fell into this category. Goodness knows what had been done to the exhaust, but it sounded like the car had had 10 pints of stout and a hot curry the night before

Do you not think maybe it just makes them happy?

megletthesecond · 06/01/2024 19:07

We took the piss out of people like this thirty years ago. I can't believe lads still think it's cool.

Lonelycrab · 06/01/2024 19:09

Do you think it makes people a mile away who can hear it quite clearly feel happy at some backfiring monstrosity dominating the quiet evening, when most people just get in a normal car and get from a-b?

If you want to race a racing car, pay for a track day.

hogmanayhoolie · 06/01/2024 19:10

They do it because they think we will all look on with wonder and envy. (While most people think "why a twat")

There was a similar thread a few months ago and there was a poster who kept on and on trying to explain to us thickos about how enjoyable it was.

MahShinyShoes · 06/01/2024 19:12

Ah, they're just trying to be edgy.
Pap pap pap pap paaarrrrp burrrrp parrrp... it's so subversive. Nobody's telling these guys what to do. They're lone wolves with big cherry bomb exhausts.

Although I agree with Yants that* *actual teens cant afford this brand of edginess anymore, so the boy racer caps now simply serve to hide the thinning. And they probably are being told exactly what to do with a 9-5 job and 2.4 kids at home.

Each to their own, but its all a bit cringe.

Tartantatooes · 06/01/2024 19:15

This one's that hiss too . Remember the cars with coloured lights beneath them ? I think they got banned .

Again, it's not the driver's responsibility to make others happy. If they are making themselves happy, with something they have purchased/built etc then surely that's all that matters.
again, a couple seconds of discomfort for those that do not enjoy or tolerate such noises is not causing a whole world of issues is it.

Lonelycrab · 06/01/2024 19:16

There’s this twat at my son’s secondary school. Huge queue of cars waiting for pickup at 3pm. He’s in a (I’m assuming it’s a he) Ford mustang 5 litre job with a tuned engine. As everyone quietly moves up the queue, they take the chance to rev the engine up super loud, showing their prowess and power 🥱

Feel sorry for whoever is being picked up by that twat.

Fair point, maybe there is still a limited "modding" scene amongst some younger drivers in specific areas.

But I still say on a general day to day basis virtually all the loud cars you'll see farting along the road will be Audis and BM's driven by 40-somethings.

GinBlossom94 · 06/01/2024 19:18

Boy racers, it's hardly a new thing, baked beans tin exhausts were laughable in the 90s, they still are now (yes, baked bean tins were used on the original exhaust system by those who couldn't afford a big bore system, I will always call them that). And yes, as said previously it was usually on Vauxhall Novas and Astra GTE/SRi

Can't be worse than what I got picked up in at school.. a bright purple Chrysler PT cruiser with flames down the side with said parent blasting all sorts of dodgy music.. both windows down. I wanted the ground to swallow me up.

Nonomono · 06/01/2024 19:21

I hope someone comes on and answers it truthfully.

The cars sound awful and I often think they’re breaking down and so I need to know why someone feels it sounds good!

I’ve noticed it’s always on crappy cars too.

IHS · 06/01/2024 19:21

It's quite funny sitting at traffic lights next to them. They're fizzing and popping and getting ready to move off then, when they do manage to get going in their pitiful heap, they can't even overtake you and have to thrash it to even get going 😂 then they tear up behind you and sit on your bumper until they can try to get past, all red faces and temper tantrums 😂

Laurama91 · 06/01/2024 19:25

Don't get them either. One at work sounds exactly the same as when my exhaust broke. And I was so embarrassed

mfbx5sf3 · 06/01/2024 19:26

I’m struggling to understand how someone is proposed to gain happiness from having a piece of crap car that sounds that’s it’s about to break down or from all the general public absolutely cringing with embarrassment on your behalf when you drive by farting away.

Aliaolo · 06/01/2024 19:28

We have a boy racer in the family! He likes cars, bit of an amateur mechanic I suppose, but does admit his crappy, modded car is, well, crap! He bemoans the £100s he spends on it every month or so, but won't get rid. I suspect as his friends are also mostly boy racers, it's mainly for recognition amongst peers...?
He has agreed that the exhaust sounding like a small jet landing outside is ridiculous, but for some reason it's the first thing he does when he changes cars. 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you'd like to detail some of the things you enjoy , hobbies you have, things that bring you happiness - I'm sure there's a thread on Mumsnet that berates those also. So it really is each to their own. If you don't understand it, that's fine. You don't have to have one

Nice try, I’m younger than you.
