Good things about Jan-March?

Inmecomfiesnow · 05/01/2024 12:43

They’re my worst months, I’m trying to find good points about them.
I am sort of glad for the end of the excess of Halloween-New year and plan on dialling things right down-doing simple family things with Dd, dog walks, beach trips, cooking, watching new films/series and basically hibernating/socialising mess and spending less! Happy to do that for a short time and revel in it, but possibly not until Easter!
What do you like about these months/how do you fill these months?

Six Nations
Lighter mornings
Hopefully a 1 stone weight loss

Inmecomfiesnow · 05/01/2024 12:44

*Socialising less

It's a long time till Christmas.

The days are getting longer.

Countdown to Spring.

Outthedoor24 · 05/01/2024 12:45

Every day is a bit more daylight than the day before.

Its usually colder and less wet than before Christmas. Nothing nicer than a cold frosty morning with the frost glistening in the sun.

Outthedoor24 · 05/01/2024 12:49

I always start the year with good intentions, decluttering is this years plan.
It's also a good time for craft stuff before the garden starts taking up time

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 05/01/2024 12:52

Snowdrops and spring bulbs shooting up.
DC's birthdays
Cheap center parcs holidays
Crisps frosty mornings giving way to clear, sunny days
Snow - hopefully!
Seeing the buds already on the trees
That first day where you feel the warmth of the sun on your face and you know summer is coming.

TodayForTomorrow · 05/01/2024 12:56

I find it a nice quiet, contemplative time after the fanfare of Christmas.

It's a lovely time to reset because everyone is spending less and eating less. It's a time when I think a lot about my finances and making sure that I'm being intentional towards my goals and not sleepwalking.

The house feels bigger and more airy when the decorations come down. Can be a good time to think about having a good clean and clear out of old things that have served their purpose and making room for things that are new or have been forgotten.

Walks in the cold are nice, especially when frosty, but if it's raining then you don't feel bad about staying in.

JenniferJuniper80 · 05/01/2024 13:01

Agree with everyone else so far.
Keep an eye out for the first spring bulbs, snow drops will appear soon and daffodils will soon start producing shoots.

In Norway they have 20 hour nights at this time of year. They embrace winter. We must either learn to love winter for the sake of scented candles, hearty stews with dumplings, cosy fireplaces even if they are only from youtube and on the telly. Or it's too easy to get a bit S.A.D.
Try to get outside if the sun shines, wrap up and enjoy a walk. Wear your favourite woollens, curl up with a book and love the small wins.

LenaLamont · 05/01/2024 13:01

January is for reading all the books I got for Christmas.

February is rough, but there’s 6 Nations and usually a couple of bright days to get outside.

March is for sowing seeds and planning the planting for the year. The daffodils are up and the trees are greening.

ObliviousCoalmine · 05/01/2024 13:03

I've made an effort to book things. I saved for the things I needed to save for as part of Christmas and pre-paid for most of it so that it's not a big financial horror show.

I've got one 'thing' booked per month for Jan, Feb and March (with a mini extra thing for Feb that's been booked for about 9 months - before I thought of all this).

DappledThings · 05/01/2024 13:03

Fewer storms probably, maybe some snow. Not too hot. Not still light when trying to send DC to bed.

Two months off council tax if you're on the standard pay a year over 10 months scheme.

It's a good time of year. I hate summer. I hate feeling there's no respite from heat and light. I don't like daylight past about 8pm and would stop the switch to BST if it was up to me.

porridgeisbae · 05/01/2024 13:09

The nights drawing out (you can get an app that shows you the bit they get slightly longer each day.)

Snowdrops.

My birthday:)

Badtrampoline · 05/01/2024 13:10

Hot cross buns everywhere
Daffys start to shoot up soon, then the bluebells
Its light at 5pm by the end of January
Start to plan summer days out and holidays
We keep up some fairy lights until spring for added cosyness
Lots of lovely winter foods - bangers and mash, Stew, toad in the hole, roasts, soups with butter crusty rolls, hot steaming tea and hot chocolate

What I hate:

Wet cold playgrounds - that can get in the bin

JustlikeElllie · 05/01/2024 13:13

They are tough months aren't they?

Good things are hats, coats and boots, knitted jumpers, cosy nights in bed, watching TV or reading books. Winter walks, beautiful frosty mornings. Nights getting lighter, spring bulbs, valentines, pancake day.

I've been thinking a lot about Jan-Feb and I'm trying hard to embrace it.

RosieBurdock · 05/01/2024 13:15

I "think Spring" from New Year onwards. Even though its not spring yet. I bought some nice tulips from Tesco today in spring pastel shades. I have some ornaments in spring pastel shades. Eg. Pink candles, pastel coloured class candle holders and diffuser bottle etc.
I look out for flowers pushing through and listen out for bird song. I've got a snow drop in bud in the garden already.

Onelife2024 · 05/01/2024 13:17

I like the peace of this time of year after the frantic racing around before Christmas- it’s nice to have no pressure to do anything in particular and I love sunny winter days even more than hot summers days in some ways. It also has a feeling of nature slowly coming back to life with the buds and spring flowers.

Nevermind31 · 05/01/2024 13:25

Getting back to normal after Christmas.
looking forward to Easter.
and that’s about it…

MegBusset · 05/01/2024 13:34

Get outside every day, rain or shine, during daylight hours.
Do something active every day.
Enjoy soups, stews, pasta, pies, etc.
I have a hot chocolate every day (Velvetiser!)
Do some cultural stuff- visit the theatre, an art gallery, go to the cinema or a gig.
Look out for signs of spring. I saw snowdrops out today.

countvoncount · 05/01/2024 13:35

I like not having the pressure of Christmas, new diaries, thinking of what plants to have in the garden, looking forward to holidays, finishing off leftover alcohol and mince pies, getting my brain working again after being off work...
I've never thought of this before and will admit to being a bit gloomy about Jan-March, but there's actually loads of good stuff!
Thanks OP, reminder that there are always things to be thankful for!

Lwrenagain · 05/01/2024 13:35

For DNB (dear nosy bastards) like myself, rightmove picks up.

aSwarmOfMidgies · 05/01/2024 13:43

Go outside
Enjoy the quieter time with a book or listen to music
( or even catch up with jobs or family you always ignore )
Keep pretty lights for the long evenings - channel my inner hibernation bear

I need dull times to help appreciate the fun and exciting times
I think it's a more natural rhythm- we are encouraged to endlessly run, do as much as possible rather than be but the stress can fall away

Guttedme · 05/01/2024 13:53

Dry January and it's completion!

Going to see my favourite teenage-hood pop band end of this month on the anniversary of having an operation 1 year ago.

Good loss on the scales (fingers crossed)

Looking forward to time off in February. (was meant to be this month) (((bet I don't get it!)))

All the nice bits that come out for Valentines.

Finding a new job?

Everything becoming lighter for days as we go towards end of March.

Mairzydotes · 05/01/2024 14:02

Everything is ' back to normal' and there is less pressure or deadlines in real life. Everything isn't associated with ' Christmas '

Burns night
Evenings are noticeably lighter by end of Jan and more so by end Feb

Blossom appears on the trees around the beginning of February.
Pancake day.
Leap year

Snowdrops,crocuses then daffodils and tulips.

Easter is early this year, end of march .

TheMoth · 05/01/2024 14:20

Once January is out of the way, everything feels better. February is a hop, skip and a jump to March. Everything starts to be lighter.

MyDogsPaws · 05/01/2024 14:20

I much prefer Jan-March over December. I’m always so relieved that Halloween/ Christmas are over for another year. After months of stress and dread I can finally start looking forward again. I really enjoy seeing it getting lighter everyday and Little things like snowdrops, crocuses coming up and planning all the camping trips and adventures we will be able to do in summer!
