Good things about Jan-March?

Inmecomfiesnow · 05/01/2024 12:43

They’re my worst months, I’m trying to find good points about them.
I am sort of glad for the end of the excess of Halloween-New year and plan on dialling things right down-doing simple family things with Dd, dog walks, beach trips, cooking, watching new films/series and basically hibernating/socialising mess and spending less! Happy to do that for a short time and revel in it, but possibly not until Easter!
What do you like about these months/how do you fill these months?

Landscape Artist of the Year on Sky Arts. Been looking forward to it for months!

FannyFifer · 05/01/2024 14:26

Don't have to pay council tax Feb & March.

FrownedUpon · 05/01/2024 14:27

I enjoy the quieter pace. Lots of long winter walks & pub lunches. I don’t really understand people wishing away certain months of the year. I’m just glad to be here, to be well & able to walk, read etc.

RM2013 · 05/01/2024 14:28

Feb and mar no council tax payments 🤣

other than this I generally dislike Jan/Feb/mar as it’s still cold and dark, I’m usually skint after Christmas expenses and always at least half a stone heavier. Roll on spring!!

great thread and it’s given me something to think about

Tangled123 · 05/01/2024 14:30

@MyDogsPaws I’m the same, I love Jan-March compared to Sept-Dec. I love knowing the worst weather is behind us and that Spring/Summer is getting closer. I prefer a freezing, dry Winter’s day to a wet Autumn one. I like knowing that Christmas and associated stress is done. No Christmas music at work is a bonus. The longer days/brighter mornings are good too. Seeing the first daffodils also lifts my mood a lot too.

CharlotteRumpling · 05/01/2024 14:31

Lots of great tv shows at the moment.

Mr Bates V the Post Office
The Gilded Age
Traitors
True Detective
Julia S 2

I also do a lot of cultural stuff.

Papillon23 · 05/01/2024 14:35

Days getting lighter is the best thing here.

Hyperion100 · 05/01/2024 14:35

Ski season!!!

Ponoka7 · 05/01/2024 14:38

No spend for a couple of months. Time to drop the excess weight for when summer clothes have to be worn. Having said no spend, I get my yearly Kurt Geiger bag in the sale. I'm looking forward to planning a holiday, trips away, including a UK seaside break with my GC. I enjoy spring/summer flowers, even if I just do a few pots. So I'm starting to plan my planting. It's a time of no pressure.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 05/01/2024 14:39

I generally dislike Jan-Mar, the only good things that happen are dc1(13) & dc2(10) birthdays.

That being said; I work tto & this next term is wonderfully short, 9 weeks 4 days, after an incredibly long Autumn one (15 weeks in total, not counting October half term). Longer days are on the way. By the end of March I can usually start to leave the back door open, which is lovely. Crocuses (croci)? will soon be flowering. Hopefully the weather will dry up!

Catza · 05/01/2024 14:42

I basically hibernate and ignore the world in winter. So I empathise with you.
I try to find joy in smaller things - a good film (preferably in a movie theatre rather than at home), every day with sunshine is a big event, trying fun and unexpected things that I don't feel pressure to continue for the rest of the year. I am just muddling through and waiting for the first warm spring day when I can open all the windows in the house - my favourite day in the whole year.

DilemmaDelilah · 05/01/2024 14:45

The days are getting longer
Dogs are allowed on the beaches

Thank you for this reminder! I love this!

MatildaTheCat · 05/01/2024 14:49

So many great films are released pre awards season. Nothing better than a quiet winter afternoon in the cinema.

plenty of cultural stuff to do in London and the crowds are far less.

And….. we are getting a puppy in late March so I’m savouring some calm before the mayhem hits 😁

Crushed23 · 05/01/2024 14:57

Much healthier than Oct-Dec.

Days get longer.

No council tax direct debit in February and March.

Beezknees · 05/01/2024 14:59

I've got a weekend away booked at the end of the month. DS turns sweet 16 in early Feb.

NahHumBrag · 05/01/2024 15:26

I love the fact Christmas is a whole year away. A whole year till the awfulness that is Christmas rears its head again.

I love seeing the bulbs in planted in October starting to peak through the earth and that there’ll soon be flowers in my garden.

I love the start of the salad season and coming up with new ‘warm’ salad recipes during these months.

I love the days getting longer and lighter.

I love going bird watching whilst the trees are begging to bud - you can see more and the birds are all over them for food.

I love that hot summer weather is on its way.

VanityDiesHard · 05/01/2024 15:27

They are some of my best months (I'm not the hugest fan of summer)

Awards seasons means that there is a lot of buzz about films which I quite enjoy, I'm a big film buff and a lot of good films get released in these months.

Snowdrops and crocuses.

Valentine's day. Even if you're not partnered, you can do galentines!

I love my winter perfumes, they are a little darker and richer than I feel I can wear in summer. Etat libre d'orange 'Spice Must Flow' is a big favourite.

Ditto clothing. I like some of my summer wardrobe but nothing beats my Wednesday Addams style winter gear.

I do more baking over these months as the summer can be too hot to bake.

If it is cold, then that is at least appropriate for the time of year. Summer tends to be either sweltering, which is uncomfortable, or unseasonably cold and rainy, which irritates me to no end.

Easter. I like Christmas as well but Easter is all the fun and feasting but with far less expense and pressure.

The slowdown & change of pace after frantic December.

Snowdrops.

No council tax payments.

coxesorangepippin · 05/01/2024 15:37

No midges
No intense, above the head sunshine
No sunscreen
Can wear roll necks and boots
The food is better

JosieRay · 05/01/2024 15:37

101 things to do in the garden and at the allotment. All the fruit bushes and trees to prune. Maintenance to do, all before the end of February really.

By the end of March I’ll have all my windowsills full of seedlings hopefully growing well, so hundreds of seeds to sow, starting next week with sweet peas and onion seeds.

Back to all my classes at the gym, which I’ve really missed. It’ll be lovely to see everyone again there.

Ive booked some craft workshops which I’m looking forward to.

I’m also looking forward to seeing the snowdrops.

I’m not crazy about the weather but every day it gets lighter by 2 minutes so by the end of January it’ll be light at 5pm. It only gets better from here…

DappledThings · 05/01/2024 13:03

Fewer storms probably, maybe some snow. Not too hot. Not still light when trying to send DC to bed.

Two months off council tax if you're on the standard pay a year over 10 months scheme.

It's a good time of year. I hate summer. I hate feeling there's no respite from heat and light. I don't like daylight past about 8pm and would stop the switch to BST if it was up to me.

I agree with all you say. I've drawn a sad face next to British Summertime Starts on my wall calendar.
