Good things about Jan-March?

They’re my worst months, I’m trying to find good points about them.
I am sort of glad for the end of the excess of Halloween-New year and plan on dialling things right down-doing simple family things with Dd, dog walks, beach trips, cooking, watching new films/series and basically hibernating/socialising mess and spending less! Happy to do that for a short time and revel in it, but possibly not until Easter!
What do you like about these months/how do you fill these months?

Early bulbs in the garden (snowdrops, daffodils), lighter nights (a couple of minutes extra every day!), Spring coming. Sparkling cold mornings that are great for a walk. Decluttering and redecorating the house (I'm in the middle of doing this). Learn something new in the evenings (instrument, language, sport - I've got a guitar and an instruction book/CD). Start a tiny business as a side-hustle or to grow bigger. I see winter as a time for preparation and consolidation, ready for the rest of the year.

These months are some of my favourite and are packed with things we celebrate!

The main ones:

13th Feb - Pancake Day
14th Feb - Valentine’s Day
10th March - Mother’s Day
17th March - St. Patrick’s Day
31st March - Easter Sunday

We decorate for Spring, go on outings, special meals, all sorts of fun things to do as a family.

I start sowing seeds indoors for all my lovely spring/summer veg and flowers. 😊 January is the month we book our flights for the big Aug/Sept holiday.

laclochette · 06/01/2024 10:34

It is always a struggle! I try to find nice special things to do that are inside and not too expensive. We just got tickets to the ballet for £15 each and I'm looking at opera tickets for £50 which in opera terms is very cheap and will be a magical moment.

I'm also planning on joining a choir for this "term". Getting together with people for an activity you love is always good for the soul.

Also, there are lots of pubs that have nice things like quizzes or live music etc, cosying up in a nice pub with something to entertain you helps a lot.

Then, lovely scented candles, nice baths things... And good cheese 🤣

The number of daylight hours are moving in the right direction which is great. Lots of time for reading and gaming for me, and going to the gym is readily easy when the weather is awful. So I don’t mind Jan to March really.

I know this was said in jest but I'm challenging myself to be brave enough to call out casual sexism. Please don't suggest that girls can't do maths as well as boys.

I don’t read ‘girl math’ as casual sexism or implying ‘girls’ can’t do maths.
I read it as suggesting women can be very creative and quick with figures to make them work to their advantage. And also as a joke concept - and yes, I do realise something being funny doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t sexist.

Reading

Walks wrapped up against the chill

Cosiness - love my candles and fairy lights

Listening to the wind and rain while cosy in the house

Tv gets better with series i really enjoy watching

I obviously have a theme of cosiness going here! I enjoy all the seasons but I don't cope well in heat. I struggle with the summers we get now, baking for month on end. I much prefer our classic Eglish summer days and the chilly winter. .

I get that some people don’t like heat but ‘baking for months on end’? Where exactly? We had 2 hot weeks in June and then cool and rainy here (South Wales).

Bbq1 · 06/01/2024 12:25

It certainly starts ramping up in May usual here and June, July and August can be so hot. I m in the NW. Don't get me wrong, i love sun and warmth but what happened to our warm, sunny days with a breeze?

CharlotteRumpling · 06/01/2024 12:26

I just got tickets to Alan Cumming's shoe for £15!

I am also thinking of joining a choir.

CharlotteRumpling · 06/01/2024 12:29

Show not shoe!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 06/01/2024 12:30

Lovely sunrise and sunset if it’s a nice day and im more likely to see them due to timings.

Big seas in rough days.

Days getting longer gradually.

Snowdrops

Quiet seafront walks

I do really struggle with this time of year and am so pleased to have a winter sun cruise in a couple of weeks to look forward too.

WestwardHo1 · 09/01/2024 22:50

Call me weird but I find it energising. I love going for walks on freezing days, all snuggly wrapped but but my cheeks stinging in the wind.

Ha, move to Cornwall. The "breeze" (screaming wind) barely stops!

I already live right on the coast but I enjoy a sea breeze in the summer months, not gale force winds!
