Good things about Jan-March?

Inmecomfiesnow · 05/01/2024 12:43

They’re my worst months, I’m trying to find good points about them.
I am sort of glad for the end of the excess of Halloween-New year and plan on dialling things right down-doing simple family things with Dd, dog walks, beach trips, cooking, watching new films/series and basically hibernating/socialising mess and spending less! Happy to do that for a short time and revel in it, but possibly not until Easter!
What do you like about these months/how do you fill these months?

What a mega arsehole reply that really is.

This is a nice, positive thread. Let's show the op support instead of this kind of thing.

It was an arsehole reply from the person pulling me up on a normal response to a simple thread topic. Just because she doesn't understand the statement doesn't make it sexism. It was indeed a lighthearted thread until people decided to play hero over nothing.

Typical MN when the pearl clutchers come out in force because someone was "too harsh" for their sensibilities.

menopausalmare · 05/01/2024 23:18

Yes to spring bulbs. Also, a good time to crack on with a DIY project before the days get warmer and you want to go out.

maddening · 05/01/2024 23:20

Catching up with all the people that I did not have chance to catch up with for Christmas, it's my son's bday which means by end of Jan I am shattered, get to grips with life by Feb half term and have some time off with ds - then we get bonuses from work in March and the joy of spring so try and get on top of the garden.

I also have 2 art projects I want to get going on.

TheChosenTwo · 05/01/2024 23:20

Less shaving of my legs!
I do a lot more reading during these colder months as I tend to light the fire and listen to it crackling rather than putting on the tv.
im celebrating a significant birthday and I’ve got a few things I’d like to achieve (small things, not like climb Kilimanjaro or ride a horse around the world!) before I do so I’m looking forward to working towards some of those goals.
Although I don’t become a recluse I do socialise less than other times of the year as I do enjoy a bit of breathing space.

Franked · 05/01/2024 23:20

You literally don't understand pearl clutching, and it was over about 10 years ago anyway.

Stop picking fights. You sound more foolish than you probably think.

LSTMS30555 · 05/01/2024 23:20

Looking forward to my annual winter sun holiday in gran canaries in less then 2 weeks time. All 3 of my DC's birthdays are in February and before I know it March has arrived. By than it's usually getting lighter & longer days with the temperatures increasing.

No one wants to be called out for casual sexism. But don't shoot the messenger, I guess.

Casual sexism is corrosive and everyone should be calling it out, every time. It's one to take on the chin.

My Birthday is January, I used to sing at Burns Suppers, many invites in Southern England. Now I accept my voice has gone but this year I will remember fondly.
Winter foods, Ham hock, brisket, pheasant, venison. Roasts then the stews and broths with beans and general vegetables. Wonderful leftovers. Tasty and good value and nutritious.

Oh yes, to the winter foods. I remember Nigel Slater writing about 'foods that go blip,' which covered it rather nicely.

No wasps

chillidoritto · 06/01/2024 00:04

I prefer Jan - March to late Nov as at this time of year we can finally look forward to Spring and Summer! Notice the nights getting lighter and each day getting a bit longer! Enough said!

charabang · 06/01/2024 00:30

January- nothing, it's dire, a real shit month apart from Cadbury Creme Eggs
Feb 15th - snowdrops and more daylight
March 19th - frogspawn and dillodaffs

I think our calendar is out of sync with our bodies and minds. Instead of new year, new start we can recognise we're still in the depths of winter and take a little more time to keep things slow.
For me that's a part of why I've hated this time of year in the past. I've felt so out of sync with it. This year feels better because I feel I'm working with it a bit more.

This makes a lot of sense to me! Seeing it as a continuation of the winter we’ve already started, rather than a new anything, makes more sense. A New Year around Easter time seems more logical to me. I think that used to be when the year started in fact - end of March some time.

Keeping the “winter lights” up in our house helps me too.

Indifferentchickenwings · 06/01/2024 01:12

Daylight and daffodils

and Xmas is long away
and spring is sooner !

louderthan · 06/01/2024 01:35

Lighter mornings
Days getting longer
It's a whole year til Christmas
Spring is coming!!

I always feel hopeful in January, it's a quiet calm month for me. February is a short month (also my birthday!) then at the end of March the clocks change and it's definitely spring.

Then Easter holidays, two bank hols in May and then it's summer with long light evenings. I love the middle part of the year.

Don't have to pay council tax Feb & March.

This. Also water rates.

mathanxiety · 06/01/2024 01:57

February is short.

headache · 06/01/2024 02:12

I get SAD so I really don’t like Jan and Feb I’ve often said I would like to hibernate after Christmas and wake up in the 1st March.

but I can’t so I must try and make the most of them, this year one of my DCs turns 18 so we are having a big celebration not a party as she’s quirky but something quirky and very her.

I hate my job and it’s made me very unwell so I’m going to sort it out once and for all (I have a plan)

Areyoumashing · 06/01/2024 07:24

I love all these comments and this has made me feel so positive. Thank you 😊

bluevelvetbox · 06/01/2024 07:47

I'm reading this thread in bed with a cup of tea. It's lovely.

I agree - reading, blankets, walks as well as the council tax. Lighter evenings are on the way. Planning new ideas and new hobbies.

DarlingCoffee · 06/01/2024 08:14

A brand new calendar
events and holidays to plan and book
the garden is waking up slowly
those crisp dry mornings
birthdays!
The Traitors on TV
hot chocolate at my local cafe
decluttering and spring cleaning which I love
fish pie, casseroles and all the good winter food

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 06/01/2024 09:18

I saw the first crocuses yesterday!

NahHumBrag · 06/01/2024 09:26

Hyacinths.

Coming home and opening the door to their scent filling the house is just lovely.

Bbq1 · 06/01/2024 09:55

Reading

Walks wrapped up against the chill

Cosiness - love my candles and fairy lights

Listening to the wind and rain while cosy in the house

Tv gets better with series i really enjoy watching

I obviously have a theme of cosiness going here! I enjoy all the seasons but I don't cope well in heat. I struggle with the summers we get now, baking for month on end. I much prefer our classic Eglish summer days and the chilly winter. .
