So worried about my baby, can any mums helps

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:00

I have joined mumsnet specifically to ask about this as I am now feeling desperate. My baby had his one year vaccines this time last week, four injections in total including the MMR. The following day he had a high temperature of over 40, called 111 when nothing brought it down and they said to take to a and e. We did this and they said he was fine and temperature was high but probably the vaccine. Sent home. He has been an entirely different baby since that day. Temperature over 40 continued on and off for first 4 days, that has now stopped.

But my baby is looking vacant, not engaging, staring into space, not playing. We went to the supermarket yesterday and two separate people commented that ‘if looks could kill,’… he looks angry. This is not like him. The biggest worry I have is sleep… he slept 14.5 hours last night and is now having a nap again already after waking up at 9:30am? He did the same yesterday and also had a 2.5 hour nap in the afternoon as well. That’s almost 18 hours of sleep a day?

I am very pro vaccines and we are paying for the chicken pox one soon but this has really scared me. Why is he sleeping so much so long after? Why has his temperament changed?

Oh also his eyes keep rolling back slightly as if he’s very sleepy? This is happening a few times an hour but no signs of seizure and his temperature is normal now

Phone the doctor to get him checked if you are worried.

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:04

@Soggydog i have, appointment is not until this afternoon and I am worried will just be told it’s normal but surely this much sleep and other symptoms are extreme?

Please get him seen by a doctor asap. The eye rolling you mention would concern me.

endofthelinefinally · 03/01/2024 11:05

Sorry, X posted. Video the eye rolling if you can, in case he is sleeping when you take him.

Woodworm2020 · 03/01/2024 11:07

How worrying for you OP. You need to listen to your instincts and phone the doctor - they will treat you as a priority as he is so young. You know your baby better than anyone else and you’re his main advocate. Even if it’s nothing, it will put your mind at rest.

PronounsBaby · 03/01/2024 11:08

Make a note of symptoms for this afternoon to make sure you don't miss anything.

Really let the doctor know that you know your baby and he is not right.

Try to remain calm, you will not be taken seriously if you appear hysterical.

Ask about what to expect and talk about what the side effects can be.

I can't imagine how you must be feeling. Sorry to hear you are going through this. 💐

malmi · 03/01/2024 11:10

This isn't really the place for medical advice. Call 111 or take him to the GP. It's horrible when they are not themselves and you don't know why, but in my experience the health care teams are always happy to offer reassurance and will go and get second opinions from colleagues etc.

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:17

Thanks he has a GP appointment later, I’m just worrying a lot.

the eye rolling I think is really odd? It seems linked to when he’s sleepy but I’ve never seen it before?

I can’t understand how he can have had 14.5 hours sleep, woken at 9:30 and then back in bed at 10:45 today, still asleep now? Surely that’s not right? But then he’s eating, drinking, normal nappies and no temperature

JoyOdell123 · 03/01/2024 11:18

You’re seeing the dr later. Try and calm down. We can’t diagnose anything over the internet!

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:20

@JoyOdell123 i was just looking for some support and wondering if anyone else had experienced this. I am on my own and just worrying.

Video the eye rolling and the angry face.
See the doctor and be calm but very firm.
Hope your baby is ok..

Spencer0220 · 03/01/2024 11:21

How worrying.

Do you have someone who can go with you? So that if you get upset they can continue to help advocate for you/baby?

When my sister was a new mother, she found she was taken more seriously if our mum or dad also went too.

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:23

@Spencer0220 i don’t have anyone to come with me today unfortunately. I have tried to video the eye rolling but it is for maybe 2-3 seconds so it’s hard to do. Because his observations are ok generally, like heart rate and temp etc and he is eating, I feel like nobody is going to listen.

I can’t believe it is normal to sleep this much it just doesn’t seem right

OP posts:
Spencer0220 · 03/01/2024 11:25

Good luck. The calmer you are, the more you will be listened to

Soontobe60 · 03/01/2024 11:29

It’s more likely just a coincidence with the timing of the jabs in that he fought a virus hence the high temps. I wouldn’t be too worried about the amount of sleep - he could have had a restless night but not enough to wake you hence the need for another sleep this morning - when my grandchildren were ill as babies they would sleep practically all day and night for a few days.
Explain your concerns to your GP, I’m sure your baby will be back to their old selves soon x

Lovemusic82 · 03/01/2024 11:29

I hope everything is ok OP and the GP can reassure you. My dd is almost 18 now, I can’t post my full story on here because I will be told I am spreading rubbish or be accused of being anti vax (I’m not). My dd had a reaction to the MMR and ended up in hospital, I was told it was nothing to do with the vaccination and that she had a virus.

endofthelinefinally · 03/01/2024 11:30

Does any other movement happen with the eye rolling? Observe carefully so you can tell the doctor.

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:31

@Lovemusic82 did she fully recover? I am worried something is very wrong

Nancy1906 · 03/01/2024 11:31

I'm also v pro vaccines but since my dc vaccinations my dc has never been the same, sadly.. but is improving due to intervention by myself over the last 7 months

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:31

@endofthelinefinally no it is literally just a gentle roll back of the eyes like he can’t control it. He isn’t staring into space as much as yesterday but the eye rolling is still happening today and he is still asleep again

OP posts:
Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:32

@Nancy1906 what do you mean not the same? From the mmr?

OP posts:
MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2024 11:32

I'm not a medical person but I think sometimes when you have a jab you can be ill afterwards. Like having flu after being flu-jabbed.

It's probably nothing serious but go and get it checked out.

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:34

@MerryChristmasToYou i thought this but it has been a week now? I would have expected sleepiness a few days after but not this long

When my son had his yearly vaccines the nurse said that he could show symptoms over the following 10 days after, so 7 days is still well within that time frame - see what the gp says this afternoon -
