So worried about my baby, can any mums helps

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:00

I have joined mumsnet specifically to ask about this as I am now feeling desperate. My baby had his one year vaccines this time last week, four injections in total including the MMR. The following day he had a high temperature of over 40, called 111 when nothing brought it down and they said to take to a and e. We did this and they said he was fine and temperature was high but probably the vaccine. Sent home. He has been an entirely different baby since that day. Temperature over 40 continued on and off for first 4 days, that has now stopped.

But my baby is looking vacant, not engaging, staring into space, not playing. We went to the supermarket yesterday and two separate people commented that ‘if looks could kill,’… he looks angry. This is not like him. The biggest worry I have is sleep… he slept 14.5 hours last night and is now having a nap again already after waking up at 9:30am? He did the same yesterday and also had a 2.5 hour nap in the afternoon as well. That’s almost 18 hours of sleep a day?

I am very pro vaccines and we are paying for the chicken pox one soon but this has really scared me. Why is he sleeping so much so long after? Why has his temperament changed?

Have you looked at his ears? My littlest nephew had a horrible ear infection and his main symptoms were being off and his mouth seeming sore!

Hope he's okay and the scaremongering on this thread isn't making you more anxious!

Thesoundoflettinggo · 03/01/2024 12:55

Oh also his eyes keep rolling back slightly as if he’s very sleepy? This is happening a few times an hour but no signs of seizure and his temperature is normal now

Not all seizures are full fitting types. My son has epilepsy and although he does have tonic clonic seizures, he also has many other seizures types. Some of these present as staring, eye rolling, subtle head drops... I'm absolutely not saying that your baby is having seizures, just saying not to dismiss the eye rolling and I'd definitely mention it to the GP and even catch a video of it if you can.

I can't comment on any of this being anything to do with the vaccines, but do keep on at your doctor about all the changes you've noticed. Especially if they are worsening. It's likely he's fine and is just a bit out of sorts, but always better safe than sorry. I hope he picks up to his usual self soon.

Janieforever · 03/01/2024 12:55

Oh op, I’m sorry if the scaremongering on here has made your anxiety worse, I do wonder what goes through some people’s heads at times

if your child is eating properly it’s unlikely his mouth is sore, his temp is now normal. Normal nappies. He prob had a reaction ti the jab and has slept it off, hopefully the doctor can reassure you.

i mean this gently do you suffer from anxiety? On a threat like this. Understanding that is also important

GreyDuck · 03/01/2024 12:56

Hi I definitely agree with the advice to check your baby out with the GP, and a video of the eye-rolling and lip pursing would be helpful.
Since there are so many bad news stories on here, I want to reassure you that although you absolutely should get it checked out, it also could be nothing at all. My son had quite a few occasions where he would pretty much just feed and sleep all day. It usually either accompany an infection or a growth spurt. It was always obvious afterwards what had caused it.

Aussiewife · 03/01/2024 12:58

My little one was the same after their 1 year jabs. They were very sleepy, miserable, didn't play or smile for a few weeks. I lost count of the number of times they were sent home from nursery. I was in tears at the doctors several times, I was so worried. But after a few weeks they were back to themselves. Doctor said they just had a virus at the same time as getting the jabs.

AnneValentine · 03/01/2024 13:01

Vaccines can make you unwell. That’s a fact. At this point he’s very much within the window of vaccines make some poorly.

Never sit around worrying though so get him checked out.

My daughter has Autism, not caused by the vaccine but possibly made worse from the vaccine, I shall never really know. I don’t want to scare anyone as my dd was already going through diagnosis before her 2nd MMR (which she reacted badly too), I didn’t want her to have the MMR as she had a small reaction to the first and at the time there was a lot in the media about a link to ASD, my GP and health visited called me every week asking me to get her vaccinated so I did. We ended up in A&E with her eyes rolling/possible seizure , I got mixed info whilst in hospital with her, one doctor saying she had a virus and another saying it could be a reaction to the vaccine. She was unwell for a week after the vaccine, some regression (less eye contact etc…) but because she was already being accessed for autism I couldn’t say that it was anything to do with the vaccine. Do talk to your GP and keep going back if your ds is still not himself, hopefully he’s just been a little unwell, as others have said ‘you can be unwell after vaccines and have flu like symptoms’.

There is no connection between vaccines and ASD and ASD is not “made worse”.

LightSpeeds · 03/01/2024 13:04

Thinking of you and your little one. I hope the doctor is sympathetic later... x

My child was seriously ill after the flu vaccine when she was 4. She ended up in hospital a week later with high temperature, pale all over, not eating etc. It sparked off urine infections for years. It was about six to nine months before she was herself.

We earlier refused the MMR as a friend's child literally changed overnight. Well, that was one of many reasons.

No vaccines at all have been given since she was 4, and she has a 100 per cent school attendance rate. She's now 12.

Bet she will love you when she gets HPV.

and falls pregnant and establishes the elevated risks of not being vaccinated.

etc etc etc.

FeliciteFaff · 03/01/2024 13:08

It was for this reason that I had all my baby’s vaccines separated. It was possible and did provoke a few eye rolls from the medical people but we swam thru the vaccination period albeit with minor manageable symptoms.

OooohAhhhh · 03/01/2024 13:08

Firstly I'd like to say how worrying for you, parenting is hard at the best of times!
Ok, so firstly don't google etc, I've heard of people not registering babies at birth to avoid vaccines due to thinking they can cause harm - this is rediculous and dangerous.
Secondly - don't underestimate the power of the mind - it's a very powerful thing, and is the root cause of many mental health issues (anxiety, depression etc) - if you believe something to be true, the mind can make it appear so.
Thirdly it's highly likely it's just a coincidence - but as he has just had his vaccines you are seeing this as causation when it probably isn't.
Although of course it is possible that he may of had a reaction to some of the ingredients in the vaccine too
Tell the Dr all of your worries and hopefully they will be able to put your mind at rest 😊

Pickledonionout · 03/01/2024 13:11

This is quite normal after their 12 month jabs. As most are live vaccines they can suffer the symptoms of mumps etc. which include high temperatures and being very tired

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 13:12

Thanks so much for the support. I am feeling better now he’s playing a bit this afternoon!

Still very concerned about the mouth and the eyes so will talk about that with the doctor later but it’s definitely an improvement on yesterday. I never realised a child could sleep so much!

I’m supposed to be back at work tomorrow, would you keep him off as he’s sleeping so much? I hate to think of him being in a full on environment at nursery and not being able to rest…

@Mangochutneey might be worth taking a refresher antenatal course, as this is quite common knowledge around the 12 month jabs being bad ones in terms of how babies are afterwards

DisappearingGirl · 03/01/2024 13:14

About the eye rolling - both of mine as babies sometimes used to roll their eyes back into their head when they were really tired. Never had any seizures or anything. Not saying it's nothing to worry about, but just wanted to mention it.

Why would an antenatal course cover 12 month vaccines?

LapinR0se · 03/01/2024 13:15

Excessive sleeping with eyes rolling back in his head and unusual face movements ARE a cause for concern

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 13:15

@Pickledonionout well I never did an antenatal course in the first place so it wouldn’t be a refresher!

Mine too, and one used to sometimes sleep with his eyes open - REMing all over the place for a brief time. That was weird, he’s a man now and still sleeps very deeply.

so, kids who are tired can be odd, I hope that’s all it is for your wee one

This is very true, as an adult the flu jab can knock you for six, one year I just slept and slept and felt really grim and definitely not smiley, a fever really knocks it out of you.

See what the GP says later.

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:32

@Nancy1906 what do you mean not the same? From the mmr?

My dc was very alert, she was following faces and directions at 4 months. After all the series of vaccinations she stopped , she didn't give eye contact again, she stopped playing, she stopped responding to her name.

I don't know what caused it. But we have nothing like this on either side of our families.

Thankfully after 8 months ,she's turning around now due to the various steps I've taken .

LapinR0se · 03/01/2024 13:19

@Mangochutneey do you have any photo or video of it?
