So worried about my baby, can any mums helps

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:00

I have joined mumsnet specifically to ask about this as I am now feeling desperate. My baby had his one year vaccines this time last week, four injections in total including the MMR. The following day he had a high temperature of over 40, called 111 when nothing brought it down and they said to take to a and e. We did this and they said he was fine and temperature was high but probably the vaccine. Sent home. He has been an entirely different baby since that day. Temperature over 40 continued on and off for first 4 days, that has now stopped.

But my baby is looking vacant, not engaging, staring into space, not playing. We went to the supermarket yesterday and two separate people commented that ‘if looks could kill,’… he looks angry. This is not like him. The biggest worry I have is sleep… he slept 14.5 hours last night and is now having a nap again already after waking up at 9:30am? He did the same yesterday and also had a 2.5 hour nap in the afternoon as well. That’s almost 18 hours of sleep a day?

I am very pro vaccines and we are paying for the chicken pox one soon but this has really scared me. Why is he sleeping so much so long after? Why has his temperament changed?

Have you seen the absolute worse measles can do , I have .Worked in community care for a lot of years and once met a child who was healthy , caught measles , not had MMR jab .End result swelling of the brain and left brain damaged and paralysed for life .All jabs have a risk we all know that , I have two high functioning autistic teens , both had MMR , autism is in my family .I have worked a lot with autism and autistic children over the years .It is neurological , a missing wiring of the brain .The MMR jab has absolutely Nothing to do with it .My youngest no autistic DC is now in their late 2020"s and fine .I remember the MMR controversy and speaking to our amazing GP at the time who said it was awful and he was scaring parents witless.

@Mangochutneey always trust your gut full .If you feel your baby is unwell seek medical help and stick to your guns if anyone tries to fob you off .You are doing fine , we all doubt ourselves as new parents but it gets easier 🤗.

At no point have I said my child did not get the measles vaccine. She received the single vaccine.

Scrantonicity2 · 03/01/2024 14:40

We're a week on from Christmas where many many families travelled and mixed and socialised so absolutely tons of people are getting bugs at the moment.

For sure take him to the doctor but there is so much going around that a bug is likely.

Which is not licensed for use in the UK anymore.

Speak to your GP if your worried but to ease your panic a bit it could just be a coincidence of timing with natural development.

I remember going to the supermarket one day and my usually mega friendly 1 year old taking exception to one specific poor woman who was just minding her own business and shopping. It start with a look that could kill and descended in panic, desperately trying to climb into my arms and screaming blue murder. Poor woman looked horrified, she was just grabbing some milk lol. It was a natural 'sudden' realization of 'stranger danger' though which is part of the learning curve.

If they have been unwell with a temperature and/or going through a growth spurt and/or going through a mental leap then tiredness is very common with all three and they might just be exhausted.

Well said. The MMR can be tough on them, but nowhere near as tough as measles.

Exactly this. My mum worked as a carer for a women who was left severely mentally and physically disabled after catching measles as a child.

I don't think people realise how devastating measles can be.

beautifulbrothers · 03/01/2024 14:45

I've only read OPs posts, but wanted to say that my LO had a horrible virus about 2 weeks before Christmas (8mo). He was refusing food for almost a week, still breastfeeding, but had a 40C temperature for about 3 days. We ended up in A&E on a Sunday night because he was vomiting after Calpol, was listless and the thought getting through the night was terrifying tbh. They gave him paracetamol suppositories which really helped. He was really poorly for about 7-10 days.

He is completely back to normal now, but it took it out of him at the time and made me realise how grateful I am for his usual good health.

Hope your LO is better soon.x

Absolutely this!!

The vaccines can have side effects but getting measles is a million times worse.

I genuinely worry for the child when their parents would prefer to take the risk of getting a life threatening illness.

I hope your LO is ok OP 💐

Your poor child, being denied lifesaving preventative healthcare because her parent is worried about transient flu like symptoms :(

Sigh. She has had the measles vaccine, just not the 3in1 MMR vaccine.

Bilbo63 · 03/01/2024 14:54

I remember when my youngest was tiny and reacted badly to everything - he had reflux, asthma, eczema, dairy intolerance - the list goes on. I was considering delaying the MMR or not getting it done and a friend who is a children’s nurse begged me to get the vaccine done - she told me she had nursed dying children with measles.

Anyway, it is done now, I am sure the doctor will reassure you and your baby will improve in the next few days.

My DS is booked in to have his 1 year jabs next week, and now I'm a little anxious after reading this 😕

Hobnobswantshernameback · 03/01/2024 15:02

Don't be
get them vaccinated
They are at far more risk of complications from catching these illnesses than the vaccines

Hobnobswantshernameback · 03/01/2024 15:04

Years ago people died or were left severely disabled by illnesses such as measles and rubella
Polio's effects were horrific.
Meningitis can kill in hours
How quickly people forget

ScrantonDunderMifflin · 03/01/2024 15:04

What a worry for your OP :(
I hope the appt goes well.

He'll be fine. He might be a bit unlucky and have a couple of weeks of feeling the side effects (this is normal and listed in the leaflet, my eldest that suffered with them followed the timeline very closely) but it's vanishingly unlikely to be any worse than that. Much better than the risk of these awful illnesses.

He might also be absolutely fine, I don't remember my youngest's reactions at all so she must have been fine.

Obviously, anyone concerned about their child's health should seek professional advice, as OP has done.

Sarah1834 · 03/01/2024 15:09

Hi @Mangochutneey you are doing the right thing going to GP. When my little girl had the first mmr vacination she had a really bad reaction too. Her temp was 40.9 and wasn’t coming down with Calpol or nurofen. We took her to a&e admitted to childrens ward and they told us it was a really bad reaction of the injections. We were given open access for 48 hours. The next morning she was blue lipped and had mottled skin her temperature was still sky high we took her back & they did a swab she had adenovirus and rhinovirus. The sent us home. I wasn’t happy that it was viral I knew there was something else going on and took her to the gp the next day. She had severe tonsillitis. How they missed it in hospital I’ll never know. I know the mmr didn’t cause that but I think it lowered her immune system and that made the virus’ & infection worse. You know there is something not right your baby so please don’t be fobbed off x

TheShellBeach · 03/01/2024 15:09

I hope this is nothing serious OP.

Please do not be worried. Millions and millions of children have these every day and are fine. Throughout bringing up our children we will have these sorts of decisions to make and sometimes it can feel a bit overwhelming, but we have to try and stand back and weigh up the risks vs benefits equation in a rational way.

My now 45 year old DD did not have the whooping cough jab as, at the time, whooping cough was never seen (ironically because the vaccine had virtually eradicated it) and there was a rumour going around that it could do harm. This was the worst decision of my life. She got whooping cough when she was 4 and was so very very ill. She survived, but two years later she could not run without fierce bouts of coughing and vomiting. Even now she has problems and has been on treatment for chest problems all her life.

It is so easy to take vaccination for granted, especially as we do not see the desperate results of these illnesses - precisely because most children are vaccinated.

There is a good reason why these vaccinations are offered.

SS1983 · 03/01/2024 15:16

My son has a really bad reaction straight after, non responsive and hysterical (couldnt calm him down), v high temp, seizure like.. and we had to ambulance him in to hospital. And then a reaction about a week in... the measles part kicks in after - like a week, so it is the case there can be reaction then too. It seemed like ages for us too with the initial reaction taking a while to recover and being sever, then kicking in again a week later.. hugs to you

SS1983 · 03/01/2024 15:16

I wanted to add that he was fine after.. it was just a worse reaction and took longer to recover..

Mischance · 03/01/2024 15:16

There is a bit of a vaccine debate going on now OP, but I just wanted to say you have not bee forgotten and I hope you have had some good help and advice from the GP.

AnneValentine · 03/01/2024 13:05

Bet she will love you when she gets HPV.

and falls pregnant and establishes the elevated risks of not being vaccinated.

etc etc etc.

This is really rude.
While not this poster’s scenario, are you aware that there are people unable to get this vaccine due to reactions to it or maybe for a reason or another (moving countries, etc) that they did not have it at the 12-13yo stage.
be mindful that the poster is not the only one reading your replies.

Also, just because you didn’t have X vaccine does not automatically mean you will have X illness.

This is the other side of medical scaremongering.

TiredandWornoutFTM · 03/01/2024 14:53

That's the biggest drip feed I've ever seen on here 😆

aloris · 03/01/2024 15:19

As much as possible, you need to document objectively what you have observed. Typical sleep pattern prior to vaccine, vs sleep pattern over the last 3 days. Videotape the eyes rolling back. Show video of his usual demeanor vs current demeanor.

I think it's unlikely it will be attributable to the vaccine but whether it's from the vaccine or not, if you want it treated or even diagnosed, you need to provide objective information to the doctor.
