So worried about my baby, can any mums helps

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:00

I have joined mumsnet specifically to ask about this as I am now feeling desperate. My baby had his one year vaccines this time last week, four injections in total including the MMR. The following day he had a high temperature of over 40, called 111 when nothing brought it down and they said to take to a and e. We did this and they said he was fine and temperature was high but probably the vaccine. Sent home. He has been an entirely different baby since that day. Temperature over 40 continued on and off for first 4 days, that has now stopped.

But my baby is looking vacant, not engaging, staring into space, not playing. We went to the supermarket yesterday and two separate people commented that ‘if looks could kill,’… he looks angry. This is not like him. The biggest worry I have is sleep… he slept 14.5 hours last night and is now having a nap again already after waking up at 9:30am? He did the same yesterday and also had a 2.5 hour nap in the afternoon as well. That’s almost 18 hours of sleep a day?

I am very pro vaccines and we are paying for the chicken pox one soon but this has really scared me. Why is he sleeping so much so long after? Why has his temperament changed?

When babies are fighting off viruses they will sleep a lot. But see the gp if you are worried.

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:34

@MerryChristmasToYou i thought this but it has been a week now? I would have expected sleepiness a few days after but not this long

I hope you get some answers today. He might have had a viral infection coinciding with the flu Jab. It could have actually been the flu considering how high his temperature was and how quickly it came on. I think it can easily take a week or more to fully recover from that. Best of luck.

Nrjulie60 · 03/01/2024 13:23

You do realize how dangerous measles can be and it is now on the rise because of people like you that refuse to get their children vaccinated

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 13:24

@Nrjulie60 my child has been vaccinated?

As a pp said, he was probably coming down with a virus before the jabs and the jabs have just made him feel worse iyswim. People sleep when ill as that's how our bodies heal so hopefully it's just his body needing that sleep for healing purposes. As he's eating and drinking ok, you've hopefully got nothing to worry about. See what GP says and try to stay calm. Sending an unmumsnetty hug for support 💐

Oh op, I’m sorry if the scaremongering on here has made your anxiety worse, I do wonder what goes through some people’s heads at times

if your child is eating properly it’s unlikely his mouth is sore, his temp is now normal. Normal nappies. He prob had a reaction ti the jab and has slept it off, hopefully the doctor can reassure you.

i mean this gently do you suffer from anxiety? On a threat like this. Understanding that is also important

It's ridiculous to suggest that the OP is being overly anxious here. She has a baby who is acting differently from normal, including eye rolling, and she's thinking of taking him to the GP. That's a perfectly reasonable response. It does not suggest that she's overly anxious.

Op the measles virus kicks in on day 5/6 after jabs.

It may be, or it may be seizure related which again may be related to the jabs and thus nothing to worry over or may be something more.

Attending a Gp with some footage of what he's been doing is reasonable and not overly anxious

Iwasafool · 03/01/2024 13:35

You can feel awful after a jab, I'm generally lucky and had no problems with flu or covid jabs. Then I had the shingles jab and felt absolutely awful and yes I was tired and slept lots.

It is always better to see the doctor if you are worried, no one knows your baby like you do. One of mine was dreadful after one jab but as baby number 4 I was quite relaxed about it but happened to have a HV visit and she was very concerned and insisted I saw the doctor but it really wasn't anything to worry about but still nice to have his reassurance.

Might he be teething, getting the back teeth can make their mouth really sore?

Hope everything goes well.

369damnshesfine · 03/01/2024 13:36

You should take him to A&E.

I’m sure he’s fine and probably just having a bit of reaction to the vaccine, which some people do.

Or it could be a complete coincidence and he’s poorly with something else.

Eye’s rolling back needs to be seen as it could be a symptom of kidney issues.

I would take him to A&E now just to be on the safe side.
(111 will probably suggest the same).

Jumpingpogosticks · 03/01/2024 13:36

I would be concerned too, but it is most likely that he's either coming down with something, as well as the usual vaccine reaction, or might even have teeth coming through.
It's hard when they're so young and they can't tell you what's going on.

I'm glad you've got an app for him this afternoon. GPs tend to be really careful with babies... I hope he's back to his normal self quickly

elliejjtiny · 03/01/2024 13:40

My son used to do the eye rolling thing. Really hope the gp is reassuring.

In the middle of the day unless he's collapsed or whatever going to gp first is the fastest way through the system

Fawklight · 03/01/2024 13:41

My husband had his second MMR in November (He only got one dose as a kid and ended up very very poorly with Mumphs) the nurse told him that he can still swell up slightly 14 days after the vaccine. Also About a week to 10 days after MMR vaccination, when the measles part of the vaccine starts to work they can become feverish.

Vaccines DO NOT CAUSE AND NEVER HAVE CAUSED AUTISM!!

endofthelinefinally · 03/01/2024 13:43

Some people are being really nasty to a new mum who is worried about her baby. There is no need for it.
Eye rolling can be significant and good advice has been given.
I hope the gp can reassure you op.

willingtolearn · 03/01/2024 13:43

I hope you've now seen your GP.

I think it is very good advice to video the eye rolling/chewing episodes.

TimetoPour · 03/01/2024 13:48

I don’t know who I feel more sorry for you or baby. It’s so worrying when young ones are poorly.

Both my babies were sleepy when they had their jabs, were under the weather, recovering from a virus and when teething. It’s not uncommon and highly likely that this is the case for your child too. However, you are doing the right thing. I too would absolutely be getting them checked over and take a video of the eye rolling with you if possible.

That’s very true.

I hadn’t seen she had a GP appointment so that’s great!

Gingerbee · 03/01/2024 13:50

If you can print out the list of symptoms you mention and take a video if possible. Or a photo before her became unwell.
Try to be calm but firm at your appointment.
Good luck and hope he feels better soon

Did you read the actual OP?

The vaccines are the point of it!

VampireWeekday · 03/01/2024 13:50

The people having a go at the OP are coming across as deranged. Vaccines do carry a certain risk, they literally say so in the small print. The point is that the risks are worth it when compared to the risks posed by catching the illnesses that vaccines guard against. The OP is doing exactly the right thing to document and go to the GP, who will be the best person to put her mind at ease if all is well and advise on next steps if baby is unwell.

For what it's worth OP my children always sleep loads in the days after being ill, and the vaccine can make you feel ill! So I would stay calm and carry on as you are with your GP appointment.

That really isn't very kind, the OP is worried so attacking her isn't helpful.

PleaseStopEatingMyStuff · 03/01/2024 13:52

Awww he's probably feeling horrid. There's allsorts going on with his immune system right now and it's likely exhausting him.
Keep him warm, sleep whenever he needs too, lots of cuddles. Personally I'd keep him off nursery if you can, but if he does go in explain what's going on & I'm sure they'll be extra lovely with him.
Good luck with the GP.

RandomButtons · 03/01/2024 13:54

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:01

Oh also his eyes keep rolling back slightly as if he’s very sleepy? This is happening a few times an hour but no signs of seizure and his temperature is normal now

Take him to the doctor, he needs checking over.

He may well have caught a virus at the same time as the vaccines, so he might be fine in a few more days.
