So worried about my baby, can any mums helps

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:00

I have joined mumsnet specifically to ask about this as I am now feeling desperate. My baby had his one year vaccines this time last week, four injections in total including the MMR. The following day he had a high temperature of over 40, called 111 when nothing brought it down and they said to take to a and e. We did this and they said he was fine and temperature was high but probably the vaccine. Sent home. He has been an entirely different baby since that day. Temperature over 40 continued on and off for first 4 days, that has now stopped.

But my baby is looking vacant, not engaging, staring into space, not playing. We went to the supermarket yesterday and two separate people commented that ‘if looks could kill,’… he looks angry. This is not like him. The biggest worry I have is sleep… he slept 14.5 hours last night and is now having a nap again already after waking up at 9:30am? He did the same yesterday and also had a 2.5 hour nap in the afternoon as well. That’s almost 18 hours of sleep a day?

I am very pro vaccines and we are paying for the chicken pox one soon but this has really scared me. Why is he sleeping so much so long after? Why has his temperament changed?

I am sorry that you have this worry - but I hope that the GP will be able to explain it all for you.

Her body is busy making antibodies, and she may also have acquired a further virus - there are loads about at the moment. Please be assured that vaccines are safe but that temps and other things can happen during the following fortnight.

Let us know how it goes with the GP. Be clear and measured in your approach, with a list of what the problems are.

Yozzer87 · 03/01/2024 13:54

If this is not some sort of backward anti vax post then I hope by now your child has been seen by the GP. If not, I'd go to A and E. A baby with soaring temperature, vacant and rolling eyes needs to be seen rather than posting on MN. You can do that after your child has had urgent medical attention.

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 11:17

Thanks he has a GP appointment later, I’m just worrying a lot.

the eye rolling I think is really odd? It seems linked to when he’s sleepy but I’ve never seen it before?

I can’t understand how he can have had 14.5 hours sleep, woken at 9:30 and then back in bed at 10:45 today, still asleep now? Surely that’s not right? But then he’s eating, drinking, normal nappies and no temperature

Just to reassure you mine did sleep A LOT after the 1 year vaccines.

Are you as much a nasty piece of work in real life as you come across on here?

PinkyPork · 03/01/2024 13:57

Of course follow what the doctor says, but when my children are ill they can have post-viral fatigue and sleep a lot more in the days after their initial recovery. My kids are poor sleepers so it's really noticeable if they sleep in a little and it happens consistently after viruses. Happens to me too! Hope your little one is okay.

ValerieMoore · 03/01/2024 14:00

Unfortunately vaccines can cause people to become very unwell. Are you able to research and pay to see a paediatrician ? I just don’t think the NHS will take it seriously.

LegoDeathTrap · 03/01/2024 14:02

It’s good you’re seeing a doctor, but please remain calm. A viral infection can make people, especially kids, very sleepy. People look angry / miserable when ill. Both my kids did the eye roll thing. A live vaccine can mimic the effects of a virus, or he might have picked something up at the same time. I can’t remember which of the childhood vaccines is it, but at least one of them has a delayed effect; the red book said something like “you might see XYZ in a week, XYZ in two weeks and XYZ in three weeks”.

Oh, and I’d keep them off nursery for another few days if at all possible.

ColleenDonaghy · 03/01/2024 14:08

Poor little thing. Definitely go see your GP since you're not happy with him.

My eldest was very ill about a week after her MMR, think her temp hit 41 at one stage. I'd say he's probably just feeling a bit fluey and miserable rather than anything more serious, but definitely worth getting checked out.

Vaccines are worth doing, but the side effects can be tough on them. If you get the flu jab you'll know you have the odd year it hits you like a train!

LurkerMcLurkson · 03/01/2024 14:11

Hi OP, hopefully the GP will check him over and confirm all okay but my little one had his vaccines mid december and hes only just really gone back to his usual self. There has been a mix of a virus and teething along with that so nothing consistent to say what was a reaction to the vaccines for definite but just wanted to say you're not alone and hopefully all okay.

You do realize how dangerous measles can be and it is now on the rise because of people like you that refuse to get their children vaccinated

What the hell?!

Bilbo63 · 03/01/2024 14:14

My youngest (now a strapping 15 year old) always reacted badly to vaccinations and was unwell afterwards and cantankerous. He has several allergies and asthma/eczema. He did get better - just a sensitive system.

TiredandWornoutFTM · 03/01/2024 14:15

Sorry to hear your little one is so ill and hope they improve soon but this is why I absolutely refuse to let my DD have the MMR jab.

Justhereforaibu1 · 03/01/2024 14:16

Glad youre going to the doc, keep us updated

Mangochutneey · 03/01/2024 14:17

Thanks everyone. I was desperate for him to have the jab as I was extremely worried about measles! And now I feel bad he’s going through this. Appointment is soon so I will update with what they say. He is much better today than yesterday (playing etc) except for the sleeping/ eye rolling that has continued.

Hope you get some reassurance op.
my child had a horrible reaction to the a vaccine, so much so that I didn’t give any more vaccinations until I took them all for full,
spaced out vaccinations when they were preteens. My best friend , a paediatric nurse with 25 years experience took one look at my baby post vaccine and said ‘take her straight to a&e, now’.
The gp played down my concerns massively but interestingly ‘allergic reaction to mmr’ was written in medical records (despite the gp telling me at the time this was definitely not the case). I only saw the entry years later.
That said, they made a full , albeit slow (several months) recovery.

Everywherieatsleepanddreamem · 03/01/2024 14:19

Sorry random typo . Mmr not ‘a’ vaccine.

Please do not peddle this sort of misinformation. Vaccines have been the most important preventive health success since sanitation. We are so very lucky to have these. Millions of people are alive and healthy today because of them. There are many many children around the world dying of these illnesses because of lack of access to vaccines.

Your poor child, being denied lifesaving preventative healthcare because her parent is worried about transient flu like symptoms :(

Well said. The MMR can be tough on them, but nowhere near as tough as measles.

thirdfiddle · 03/01/2024 14:24

My babies always did the eye roll thing as they fell asleep. Are you sure that's not just you watching extra closely because you're worried?

It's worth getting checked as it is a very high temp, but that his temp has gone down now and he's eating well sounds positive. Maybe he's just a bit achey still. Whether from something relating to the vaccine or an unrelated winter virus is hard to tell. Remember many many babies getting these vaccines and most of them get winter viruses too, the dates are bound to coincide for a proportion.

Notmetoo · 03/01/2024 14:26

It sounds as if he has a bug. It could be something totally separate from the vaccinations.
Take him to the doctor or a walk in centre again if you are worried.

Mumoftwo2022 · 03/01/2024 14:28

My little one was really really off for about 3 weeks after his 1 year jabs felt like he wouldn’t ever get back to normal but he is fine now. I think these jabs can really knock them for 6 x

My child was seriously ill after the flu vaccine when she was 4. She ended up in hospital a week later with high temperature, pale all over, not eating etc. It sparked off urine infections for years. It was about six to nine months before she was herself.

We earlier refused the MMR as a friend's child literally changed overnight. Well, that was one of many reasons.

No vaccines at all have been given since she was 4, and she has a 100 per cent school attendance rate. She's now 12.

Have you seen the absolute worse measles can do , I have .Worked in community care for a lot of years and once met a child who was healthy , caught measles , not had MMR jab .End result swelling of the brain and left brain damaged and paralysed for life .All jabs have a risk we all know that , I have two high functioning autistic teens , both had MMR , autism is in my family .I have worked a lot with autism and autistic children over the years .It is neurological , a missing wiring of the brain .The MMR jab has absolutely Nothing to do with it .My youngest no autistic DC is now in their late 2020"s and fine .I remember the MMR controversy and speaking to our amazing GP at the time who said it was awful and he was scaring parents witless.

@Mangochutneey always trust your gut full .If you feel your baby is unwell seek medical help and stick to your guns if anyone tries to fob you off .You are doing fine , we all doubt ourselves as new parents but it gets easier 🤗.

Crumpleton · 03/01/2024 14:34

Four injections for a little one in one go is a lot so will probably take it out of him.

I don't recall mine having 4 in one go but do remember them being lethargic for days after and little lumps where the needle went in seemed to stay for an age.

Hopefully your little one is fine and it's just an accumulation of the injections/winter bugs and general tiredness associated with Christmas.

This absolutely .I am an older mum , teens and adult child , but this really gets me when new mums who are already exhausted and possibly worried get peddled this absolute rot .Measles is a killer and life changing .Until we had the MMR it was a really horrific disease if you got it bad .I remember having mumps as a young child and my hair falling out , 70's baby no MMR jab .I still remember how ill I was .I would never ever wish that on my three amazing children.
