Do you wear underwear in bed?

glossypeach · 02/01/2024 23:12

I’m just curious to see what people do. I grew up with my mum telling us not to wear underwear in bed to let our bits and pieces ‘breathe’. I’m now a lot older and I still apply that to myself and my child, plus it’s so much comfier and I cannot think of anything worse than sleeping with underwear on.

So:
YABU: I do wear underwear in bed
YANBU: I don’t wear underwear in bed

No, I don't wear underwear in bed. Why would I.

This.

AngelinaFibres · 03/01/2024 09:04

We sleep naked. Used to wear pants if on my period. Long time past that now and HRT has sorted the hot flushes. Clothing in bed feels really weird now

Vote looks evenly split so far despite most comments being skewed towards no underwear.

I wear underwear and PJs. Wouldn't feel comfortable any other way but it's just personal preference...I don't care what others do. Im really not worried about the 'airing' thing. Also regardless of underwear, I tend to sleep with my duvet tucked under my arms so without PJs I feel like my sheets would smell really quickly.

It's never occurred to me before but next time there's a thread on how often you should change your sheets I think this should be included for context!

Edited

Underwear and pjs just sounds hot and sweaty to me.

Yayayyay · 03/01/2024 09:06

To the women who don't wear knickers, do you not ovulate? A pantyliner in some cotton knickers makes me feel fresh.

lavenderlou · 03/01/2024 09:08

I don't wear knickers under my pyjamas and I don't wash my pyjamas every day. The horror!

DewHopper · 03/01/2024 09:08

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 03/01/2024 08:22

It's possible they do smell a bit sometimes, but you're just used to it so don't notice.

(A weekly change sounds more than enough imho, just find it hard to believe sheets have never ever had some sort of odour).

Edited

Why would sheets 'smell' if they are changed regularly (1-2 times in week in our case) and both people are freshly showered before going to bed?

I could not go to bed without showering first as I cannot sleep without feeling clean. I do think that people who do not shower and just change their knickers (or not!) are a tad grubby.

The amount of extra laundry going on for 14 pairs of pants a week and 7 pairs of pyjamas!
My sheets are due a change because they’ve been on 2 weeks. They don’t smell. Neither of us smell either!!We shower before bed and we don’t sleep naked. I change them more often in summer.

I am thinking that many people on here are not showering before bed...

Women have quite variable volumes of disharge, I think. I've never had enough to get it on the sheets even during the most dischargey time of the month.

MadAboutThat · 03/01/2024 09:21

God no, but I hate all clothes. I would be a nudist if I had the confidence/lived in the appropriate climate.

The only time wear anything in bed is after giving birth, when you can't wear tampons, and then it's just knickers and I am MISERABLE.

43ontherocksporfavor · 03/01/2024 09:22

@SomeCatFromJapan snap. Never had anything that would leave the immediate area iyswim.

43ontherocksporfavor · 03/01/2024 09:23

@DewHopper even if I don’t shower I don’t smell . If I work out I will sweat and shower before it smells. Some people don’t have much body odour.

Fair enough but personally I would not feel clean if I did not wash the day off whether I smelled or not.
It's also a sleep hygiene thing for me though - one in a list of several things I do to ensure that I sleep well.

43ontherocksporfavor · 03/01/2024 09:31

Yeah me too but occasionally after a night out I will not but having said that I’ve showered before I go out.

Sartre · 03/01/2024 09:31

My Mum also always told us to sleep without pants to let our bits breathe but I think this is weird now and never sleep without pants. I don’t own pyjamas (haven’t since I was a child) so I sleep in an oversized tshirt and pants.

I do now as I’ve had a ridiculous amount of discharge during peri. So I need the pants and pad overnight. Otherwise we’re talking clothing and bedding changed daily, and it’s just not nice. Dd prefers to wear undies in bed, her choice to be comfy. Ds does not.

With you in that one

liveforsummer · 03/01/2024 09:34

I actually feel cold just thinking about sleeping naked as I lie here in my thick legging style pj bottoms, longline vest and long sleeve jumper style pj top and 2 pairs of socks (one pair fluffy) while wrapped up in my 13.5 tog duvet that's 2 sizes bigger than my bed to not allow even the slightest draught 😆For the pp that said the 'breathing' actually meant body heat rather than respiration, it's no warmer there underneath my pants than anywhere else on my body.

ManateeFair · 03/01/2024 09:36

Ultimately it’s just a personal preference. People will jump through hoops trying to justify why their preference is more logical or more hygienic or ‘better’ but it’s just whatever makes you comfortable.

The ‘getting some air to your bits’ thing makes sense if you regularly suffer from thrush or infections and want to reduce that as much as possible. But if you wear knickers in bed and don’t ever have any problems with those things, your bits are doing fine without being aired. Again, we’re all different.

I usually wear cotton knickers and a non-wired bra in bed. Purely just because that’s what’s most comfy for me. I only really wear pyjamas for relaxing in the evenings, almost never in bed.

EmeraldA129 · 03/01/2024 09:38

I wear PJs in winter & just a big tshirt in summer, but never pants unless I’ve got my period.

not sure about the needing to let it breathe… but don’t understand why anyone wants to wear fitted pants instead of loose clothing or nothing at all when their body is resting.

Health advice seems to suggest that sleeping without knickers on is the healthier way to go. You are more likely to get thrush etc if you wear knickers in bed apparently.

I remember once reading on here that someone wore their pants all day and then the same ones ALL NIGHT before taking them off in the morning for a shower. Other people's lack of basic hygiene can certainly be an eye opener.

GladAllOver · 03/01/2024 09:51

Wearing close fitting pants all day is not how humans evolved, so it's not what the genitals are designed to expect. I keep mine uncovered as much as possible, and certainly in bed.

No underwear and/or PJ's just sounds cold and painful to me!

The person I quoted wasn't changing their sheets as often as you.
Really my point is when people say 'I don't smell' or 'this doesn't smell' it's possible that they are just not detecting the odour because they are used to it.

As for showering before bed, I love a bath before bed but I also like a shower to wake me up and refresh me in the morning - as it is my skin doesn't really appreciate a bath and a shower within a 12-14 hour period, so it's one or the other. I change my underwear and socks morning and night, change my sleepwear every night, wash my sheets fairly often, and that works for me. We are all different, of course.

I don’t wear anything to bed.
only wear knickers to bed when I’m on my period and I hate it.

Same.

EarringsandLipstick · 03/01/2024 10:12

I keep mine uncovered as much as possible,

I don't want to imagine what that means!

Honestly, it's just clothing. Why do some people seem to think there's something inherently wrong with wearing underwear?!

VanityDiesHard · 03/01/2024 10:28

I wear underwear in bed, I find it uncomfortable not to. When I was younger I wore a firming bra to sleep in and I think it has worked as I don't sag whatsoever despite being quite full in the bust.
